Chapter 3 - the cold game)

Owen refused to sleep in his own bedroom the following night.

Ava did not argue.

She placed a small mattress beside her bed and let him choose three stuffed animals to keep with him.

He chose a bear, a rabbit and a faded blue elephant Julian had bought before Owen was born.

At two in the morning, Ava woke to a whisper.

"Mommy?"

She opened her eyes immediately.

Owen was sitting upright.

"What is it, sweetheart?"

"Door."

Ava looked toward the bedroom door.

It was open.

"I left it open for you."

"No lock?"

"No lock."

He lay back down.

Ava waited.

A minute passed.

Then he whispered again.

"Mommy?"

"Yes?"

"Don't let Snow Lady come."

Ava felt every muscle in her body tighten.

"Who is Snow Lady?"

Owen pulled the blanket to his nose.

"Cece."

Celeste.

Ava slid out of bed and sat beside him.

"Did Cece call herself Snow Lady?"

Owen shook his head.

"No. Cold game."

Ava's heart pounded.

She wanted to ask everything at once.

She forced herself to remember what Doctor Price had said.

Do not interrogate.

Do not frighten.

Let him speak.

"What is the cold game?"

Owen looked toward the doorway again.

"If I cry, I go outside."

Ava swallowed.

"And then what happens?"

"Cece waits."

"For what?"

He lifted both hands.

"Till I say sorry."

"What are you supposed to say sorry for?"

Owen frowned as though the answer should have been obvious.

"For Mommy."

Ava could not move.

"What about Mommy?"

"Say Mommy is bad."

Her throat closed.

Owen continued in the same small voice.

"Say Mommy shouts."

Ava had never raised her voice at him except once when he ran toward a parking lot.

"Anything else?"

"Mommy pushes."

Ava stared.

"Pushes who?"

"Me."

There it was.

The male voice from the recording.

He has to be afraid enough to say what we need.

Someone was trying to create a statement.

A statement against her.

Owen shifted beneath the blanket.

"I didn't say it."

Ava's eyes burned.

"What?"

"I said Mommy nice."

She leaned down and pressed her forehead to his.

"You never have to say something that isn't true."

"Cece mad."

"I know."

"She says Daddy believe her."

Ava closed her eyes.

That was the deepest wound.

Not the cold.

Not the locked door.

The belief that his father would choose Celeste over him.

Ava remained beside Owen until he finally slept.

Then she walked downstairs.

Marcus sat at the kitchen table with two laptops.

Julian stood near the window.

He had not gone home.

Ava had not invited him to stay.

She had not told him to leave either.

After the hospital, police had allowed Julian to collect several of Owen's things from the villa.

Celeste had been advised by her attorney to stay elsewhere.

She had left before midnight.

No one knew where.

Marcus had spent the evening reconstructing corrupted files.

Julian looked up when Ava entered.

"Is he all right?"

"No."

The answer struck him.

Ava sat opposite Marcus.

"He told me what they were doing."

Marcus immediately stopped typing.

"Who is they?"

"I don't know."

She repeated Owen's description of the cold game.

Julian slowly lowered himself into a chair.

When she reached the part about forcing Owen to say Ava pushed him, Julian covered his face.

Ava did not soften the details.

He needed to hear them.

Every one.

When she finished, Marcus said, "That fits."

Ava looked at him.

"What fits?"

He turned the laptop.

A list of dates filled the screen.

"Celeste contacted a family law consultant four months ago."

Julian frowned.

"A consultant?"

"Not a lawyer. A private custody strategist."

Ava had never heard the term.

"What does that mean?"

"Someone who helps clients prepare evidence for custody disputes."

Julian's expression darkened.

"Celeste has no custody dispute."

Marcus looked at him.

"Apparently she was planning one."

He opened another document.

Ava leaned closer.

The recovered file was an email fragment.

Only three sentences were readable.

Pattern of emotional instability must be documented.

Child testimony carries unusual weight if repeated consistently.

Video is ideal, but audio can establish fear association.

Ava felt sick.

"Where did you find this?"

"Deleted folder on Celeste's personal account."

Julian stood abruptly.

"Can police use it?"

"If we establish how it was obtained and authenticate the account, maybe."

Ava stared at the phrase fear association.

Owen was three years old.

To whoever wrote this, he was not a child.

He was evidence.

"What did Celeste want?"

Julian turned.

"What do you mean?"

"Why destroy me?"

Silence.

Ava pushed.

"She married you. She lives in a twelve-million-dollar house. She attends charity boards and private galas. Why risk everything to manufacture a custody case against me?"

Julian looked toward Marcus.

The guard's expression suggested he had been asking the same question.

Ava continued.

"If she wanted me gone, she already had distance. We barely spoke. She saw Owen every other weekend. Why turn him against me?"

Julian said quietly, "Maybe it wasn't about you."

Ava looked at him.

"What?"

He walked to the kitchen counter.

For a long moment he did not speak.

Then he said, "My father changed the family trust before he died."

Ava remembered Richard Mercer.

Brilliant.

Controlling.

The founder of Mercer Dynamics.

He had loved Owen with almost obsessive intensity.

"What kind of change?"

Julian faced her.

"The voting shares don't pass directly to me."

Ava frowned.

"I thought you inherited the company."

"I inherited control of operations. Not final ownership."

Marcus watched him carefully.

Julian continued.

"The controlling family shares belong to Owen."

Ava stared.

"He's three."

"They are held in trust until he turns twenty-five."

"And before then?"

"The trustees vote them."

"Who are the trustees?"

Julian hesitated.

"Me."

Ava waited.

"And?"

"His legal mother."

The room became very quiet.

Ava understood.

"Me."

"Yes."

"What happens if I lose parental rights?"

Julian looked sick.

"The trust language says that if one biological parent is declared legally unfit, deceased or permanently incapacitated, the remaining parent's spouse may petition to replace that trustee."

Celeste.

Ava slowly sat back.

"If I disappeared legally..."

"Celeste could try to take your position."

Marcus closed the laptop.

"And if something happened to Julian afterward, she could potentially become Owen's legal guardian and one of the two people controlling Mercer family voting shares."

Ava looked upstairs.

Toward her sleeping child.

The cold game had never only been about humiliation.

Celeste was building a case.

Ava as violent.

Ava as unstable.

Ava as dangerous.

Then perhaps Julian as inattentive.

And in the center of it all stood a three-year-old boy who owned something he did not even know existed.

Ava turned to Julian.

"Who knows about the trust?"

"Family attorneys. Trustees. A few executives."

"And Celeste?"

"I told her after we got engaged."

Ava wanted to scream.

Instead she said, "Find every person who knew."

Marcus nodded.

Julian pulled out his phone.

Then Owen's small voice came from the staircase.

"Mommy?"

All three adults turned.

Owen stood on the bottom step holding his blue elephant.

Ava rushed to him.

"What are you doing up?"

He looked past her toward Julian.

"Daddy."

Julian froze.

Owen walked toward him.

Julian crouched but did not touch him.

"Owen."

The boy looked at his father for several seconds.

Then asked the question no parent should ever hear.

"Did you tell Cece to put me in snow?"

Julian's face broke.

"No."

Owen waited.

Julian shook his head.

"No, buddy. Never."

"She says you did."

Julian closed his eyes.

Ava felt anger rise again.

Celeste had not only tried to turn Owen against his mother.

She had prepared him to fear his father too.

Julian carefully held out his hand.

"I should have listened to you."

Owen stared at it.

Then placed his tiny hand in his father's palm.

Julian began to cry.

Ava turned away.

Marcus's laptop chimed.

A new recovered file had appeared.

He opened it.

His expression changed.

"What is it?"

Ava asked.

Marcus turned the screen.

It was a photograph taken inside the Mercer villa.

Celeste stood in the security room beside a man whose face was partially hidden.

But the man's left hand rested clearly on the server cabinet.

On his finger was a heavy black signet ring.

Julian stared.

"No."

Ava looked at him.

"You know him?"

Julian did not answer.

Marcus enlarged the ring.

A silver letter M was carved into its face.

May you like

Julian whispered the name.

"My brother."
