Chapter 4 - the brother who hated losing)

Sebastian Mercer had not attended Julian's wedding.
He had not attended Owen's baptism.
He had not spoken to Ava in nearly four years.
But he had once lived three rooms away from Julian throughout most of their childhood.
And unlike Julian, Sebastian had never forgiven their father for choosing an heir.
Ava sat in Julian's private office the following morning while snow slid slowly from the windows.
Owen was upstairs with Ava's sister and a pediatric therapist.
Marcus stood near the door.
Julian opened a locked drawer.
Inside lay an old family photograph.
Richard Mercer sat in the center.
Julian stood behind him on the right.
Sebastian stood on the left.
Even in the photograph, the brothers looked very different.
Julian seemed relaxed.
Sebastian looked like someone waiting for the moment the camera belonged to him.
"Tell me everything," Ava said.
Julian put the photograph down.
"Sebastian and I inherited different parts of the company."
"I thought you said Owen owned the controlling shares."
"He does now. Before my father died, Sebastian expected half."
"But he didn't get it."
"No."
"Why?"
Julian walked to the window.
"Because he stole from the company."
Ava stared.
"How much?"
"Almost nine million dollars."
Marcus added, "More if you include the shell companies."
Ava looked between them.
"You knew?"
Marcus nodded.
"I worked corporate protection for Richard before I worked for Julian."
Julian continued.
"Sebastian used Mercer Dynamics accounts to cover gambling debts and private investments. Dad discovered it. There was an internal investigation. Sebastian repaid some money and resigned."
"Why wasn't he arrested?"
"Family reputation."
Ava almost laughed bitterly.
"Of course."
"Our father buried it."
"And punished him through the trust."
"Yes."
Julian looked ashamed.
"He transferred the controlling shares away from both of us."
"To Owen."
"Eventually. The trust was created before Owen was born. It specified my first biological child."
Ava understood.
"So from Sebastian's point of view, my son received what he believed was his."
"Yes."
"Then Celeste married you."
Julian rubbed his jaw.
"I met Celeste at a charity fundraiser fourteen months after Sebastian disappeared from family events."
"Disappeared?"
"He moved to Europe."
Marcus shook his head.
"We thought he did."
Ava studied him.
"What does that mean?"
"The passport activity was real. The residence wasn't. Sebastian returned to the United States several times under private travel arrangements."
"Did you know?"
"No."
"How does your security chief not know your brother is entering the country?"
Marcus did not take offense.
"Because someone inside our own security structure was hiding it."
Ava's stomach tightened.
"The same person who gave Celeste the service key?"
"Possibly."
Julian leaned against the desk.
Ava looked at the photograph again.
The man beside Celeste had been partly hidden.
But the ring was unmistakable.
"Why would Sebastian help her abuse Owen?"
Julian's jaw tightened.
"Because Sebastian doesn't see Owen as a child."
Ava's eyes lifted.
"He sees him as the lock on a door."
Marcus opened another folder.
"We traced the custody consultant Celeste contacted. The consultant is named Gregory Pike."
Ava waited.
"His firm's largest private investor is a company registered in Delaware."
"And?"
"The company is owned through two layers of holding companies."
Julian said, "Marcus."
The guard met his eyes.
"The beneficial owner is Sebastian."
Silence.
Ava stood.
"We go to police."
"We are," Julian said.
"No. Right now."
"Marcus has already sent the information."
"Then why are we sitting here?"
"Because Sebastian knows how our family works."
Ava stared at him.
Julian continued.
"If he realizes we identified him, he will destroy everything he can reach."
"He already destroyed camera footage."
"And he may have more."
"More what?"
Julian hesitated.
Ava's fear returned.
"What aren't you telling me?"
Marcus answered.
"We found a second set of deleted files on Celeste's laptop."
Ava looked at him.
"About Owen?"
"About you."
He turned the screen.
Photographs appeared.
Ava leaving her apartment.
Ava driving to work.
Ava grocery shopping with Owen.
Ava meeting a friend at a cafe.
Ava standing outside Owen's preschool.
Hundreds of photographs.
Weeks.
Months.
Her skin crawled.
"Who took these?"
"We don't know."
She clicked through them.
Then stopped.
One photograph showed Ava arguing with Julian in a parking lot eleven months earlier.
She remembered the argument.
It had been about holiday custody.
Another showed her crying alone in her car afterward.
Another showed her entering a pharmacy.
Another showed her drinking wine with friends.
All ordinary moments.
All framed to look suspicious when isolated.
"They were building a file."
Marcus nodded.
"Yes."
Ava opened another folder.
Scanned documents appeared.
Therapy appointments.
Bank records.
Prescription history.
School pickup logs.
She felt violated in a way she could not describe.
"How did they get these?"
Julian looked furious.
"I don't know."
Ava turned on him.
"Someone accessed my medical information."
"I know."
"My financial records."
"I know."
"My son's school."
"I know."
"Stop saying you know."
Julian fell silent.
Ava pressed both hands to the desk.
She wanted to destroy something.
Instead she forced herself to look.
The folder had one final file.
A text document.
She opened it.
Only seven lines.
Target becomes emotional when parental fitness is questioned.
Avoid direct confrontation during supervised exchanges.
Child responds strongly to temperature discomfort.
Repeat association between mother and punishment.
Acquire audio statement before February hearing.
If mother seeks emergency custody, proceed to Phase Two.
Ava read the final line again.
"What February hearing?"
Julian looked confused.
"There is no February hearing."
Marcus searched the computer.
"No court date appears in the public system."
Ava stared at the words.
Acquire audio statement before February hearing.
Someone expected a hearing that had not yet been scheduled.
Which meant they expected something to happen first.
"What's Phase Two?" Ava asked.
Nobody answered.
Marcus began searching encrypted folders.
Minutes passed.
Then one opened.
Inside was a calendar.
February 4.
Ava recognized the date.
Owen's next scheduled weekend with Julian.
Beside it were three words.
MOTHER INCIDENT WINDOW.
Ava felt the room tilt.
Julian stepped closer.
"What does that mean?"
Marcus opened an attached note.
The text was short.
Environment prepared.
Witness ready.
Emergency services response expected under six minutes.
Ava whispered, "They were planning an accident."
Julian stared at the screen.
"To Owen?"
Ava shook her head slowly.
"No."
May you like
She looked at the words Mother Incident Window.
"They were planning one for me."
