Chapter 15 - the man who was supposed to be dead)

Richard Mercer had been inside the villa.
Alive.
Owen was certain.
Detective Walsh showed him photographs using a child-safe identification process.
No leading questions.
No names.
No suggestions.
Owen selected Richard's photograph three times.
"Grandpa."
Julian watched through the observation window.
He looked as though someone had struck him.
Ava stood beside him.
"You believe Owen?"
"Yes."
No hesitation.
That mattered.
The therapist asked Owen when he saw the man.
Owen could not explain dates.
He described "before big snow."
He described the basement.
He described Sebastian becoming angry.
He described Celeste standing near the door.
Then he said Richard gave him a blanket.
Ava remembered the recovered video.
A man had entered the winter room.
Nathan Vale.
But perhaps there had been other sessions.
Other recordings.
Other moments erased before they knew to look.
Julian pressed his palm against the observation glass.
"My father knew."
Ava looked at him.
"If Richard was alive and knew what Sebastian was doing..."
"He should have stopped it."
"Maybe he tried."
"He should have called me."
Ava did not defend Richard.
No secret justified leaving Owen in danger.
Not the company.
Not the archive.
Not Thomas Bennett.
Not Halcyon.
Nothing.
The federal investigation expanded quickly.
News networks reported that Mercer Dynamics was cooperating with authorities in a historic data privacy and inheritance fraud investigation.
Julian temporarily stepped down as chief executive.
The company's board appointed an independent committee.
For the first time in his adult life, Julian stopped protecting the Mercer name.
He publicly acknowledged that his family had benefited from secrecy and promised to release relevant historical records to investigators.
Some shareholders turned against him.
Others praised him.
Julian did not seem to care.
He spent afternoons with Owen instead.
Ava returned to work.
Owen started trauma therapy.
The nightmares became less frequent.
He stopped checking windows before meals.
He stopped crying when Ava left the room.
One Sunday afternoon, three weeks after the night in the snow, he asked to go outside.
Ava's chest tightened.
There was still snow in shaded parts of the yard.
"Are you sure?"
Owen nodded.
She dressed him in a thick blue snowsuit.
Hat.
Gloves.
Waterproof boots.
Julian waited on the back steps.
Owen stared at the snow for almost a minute.
Then he stepped into it.
Nothing happened.
The door remained open.
Ava stayed visible.
Julian stayed near him.
Owen took another step.
Then another.
Finally he bent down, grabbed a handful of snow and threw it at Julian.
It hit Julian directly in the chest.
Owen laughed.
Julian looked shocked.
Then he laughed too.
Ava felt tears fill her eyes.
The snow did not belong to Celeste anymore.
The cold did not belong to Sebastian.
One small piece of fear had been taken back.
That evening Julian remained for dinner.
After Owen fell asleep, Ava and Julian sat across from each other at the kitchen table.
No lawyers.
No accusations.
No pretending.
Julian said, "I owe you an apology bigger than anything I can say."
Ava looked at him.
"Then don't try to make it smaller with words."
He nodded.
"I won't."
"You failed to listen."
"I know."
"You let Celeste convince you I was jealous."
"Yes."
"You dismissed Owen."
His eyes filled with pain.
"Yes."
Ava took a breath.
"I don't know if I will ever forgive that."
"I understand."
"But Owen loves you."
Julian looked down.
"And you love him."
"More than anything."
"Then prove it every day."
He nodded.
"I will."
Ava believed he intended to.
Whether intention would become trust was a different question.
Julian stood to leave.
At the door he stopped.
"I found something."
Ava looked up.
"What?"
He removed an old envelope from his coat.
"It came from Black Pine."
Ava stared.
"Police released it?"
"It was addressed specifically to me. They inspected it first."
He placed it on the table.
Richard's handwriting covered the front.
TO JULIAN.
OPEN ONLY WHEN OWEN IS SAFE.
Ava's pulse quickened.
"Have you read it?"
"No."
"Why not?"
Julian looked at her.
"Because whatever is inside started with both of us."
They opened it together.
The letter was short.
Julian,
If you are reading this, then either I failed to stop Sebastian or Margaret finally decided the truth was more dangerous than silence.
I owe you more apologies than one life can contain.
You were never supposed to inherit my mistakes.
Neither was Owen.
The trust was not created to give him Mercer Dynamics.
It was created to keep Mercer Dynamics from someone else.
Do not believe the genetic archive completely.
Some of the files were altered after Thomas died.
Some were altered by me.
I did it to hide one child.
Ava stopped reading.
Julian looked at her.
"One child."
They continued.
If Margaret has begun looking for the Bennett heir, she still does not know the identity.
Sebastian believes the heir is Owen.
He is wrong.
Ava's heart began pounding.
Julian read the next sentence aloud.
"The heir was born before Owen."
Ava stared at him.
There was no older child in either of their lives.
At least none they knew about.
The letter continued.
Find the photograph taken at St. Anne's Hospital on October 14, 1991.
Do not search Mercer files.
Search Bennett.
Ava's breath caught.
October 14, 1991.
Her birthday.
Julian noticed her expression.
"What?"
Ava could barely speak.
"That's the day I was born."
They read the final lines.
Ava must know the truth about the second infant.
Trust no birth certificate.
Trust no grave.
And if Margaret contacts you, do not tell her that Ava remembers the silver room.
Richard
The kitchen became completely silent.
Julian stared at her.
"The second infant?"
Ava shook her head.
"I was an only child."
Her phone rang.
Unknown caller.
They both looked at it.
Ava answered.
No one spoke.
Then a woman whispered.
"Ava?"
Her voice was trembling.
Ava stood.
"Who is this?"
The woman began crying.
"I don't know if they told you I died."
Ava's blood turned cold.
"What?"
The woman took a shaking breath.
"My name is Elise."
Ava gripped the phone.
"I don't know anyone named Elise."
Silence.
Then the woman said the words that made Julian rise from his chair.
"No. But I know you."
Ava could hear a car engine behind her.
Wind.
Fear.
"How?"
The woman whispered.
"Because I was born seven minutes after you."
The call disconnected.
Ava did not move.
Julian stared at her.
Outside, headlights appeared at the end of the street.
A dark vehicle stopped beyond the gate.
One rear door slowly opened.
A woman stepped into the rain.
She had long dark hair.
The same height as Ava.
The same eyes.
The same face.
Almost.
And around her neck hung a silver pendant shaped like a compass.
The same symbol tattooed on Nathan Vale.
The same symbol hidden throughout the Halcyon records.
Ava walked toward the window.
The woman outside raised one hand.
Then another vehicle turned onto the street behind her.
Its headlights went dark.
The woman looked over her shoulder.
Fear covered her face.
She ran toward Ava's gate.
Ava reached for the door.
Julian grabbed her wrist.
"Wait."
The woman screamed from outside.
May you like
"Ava, don't let them take me again."
Then every light in the house went out.
