Chapter 11 - the company before mercer)

Mercer Dynamics began in 1989.

That was the official story.

Richard Mercer had built a small aerospace engineering firm into a global technology empire.

Every company history repeated the same legend.

One man.

One garage.

One prototype.

One impossible rise.

The Northstar archive told another story.

Before Mercer Aerospace existed, Richard and Thomas Bennett had worked for a private research organization named Halcyon Systems.

No current corporate registration existed under that name.

No public history.

No surviving website.

But Nathan Vale remembered it.

"They recruited engineers from defense projects," he told Detective Walsh.

"For what?"

"I never knew exactly."

"Did Thomas Bennett work there?"

"Yes."

"Richard?"

"Yes."

"What did they develop?"

Nathan looked toward Ava.

"Identity verification systems."

She frowned.

"Biometrics?"

"Early forms. Blood typing. Inherited disease markers. Family lineage. Later DNA."

Julian leaned forward.

"Why?"

"Security clearance."

"That doesn't explain private families."

Nathan looked down.

"Halcyon expanded."

"Into what?"

"Succession."

Ava felt an unpleasant chill.

"Explain."

"Wealthy families always have the same problem. They can protect money, but they cannot control blood."

Nobody spoke.

Nathan continued.

"Secret children. Affairs. disputed heirs. False paternity. Halcyon offered certainty."

Julian's face hardened.

"And manipulation."

Nathan said nothing.

Ava understood.

"If you can prove who belongs to a family, you can also fake who belongs."

Nathan looked at her.

"Yes."

"Did Richard discover that?"

"Thomas did."

The room went still.

"What happened?"

"Thomas believed Halcyon was changing genetic records for clients."

"To steal inheritances?"

"Sometimes."

"What else?"

"To protect political careers. Corporate control. marriages. criminal exposure."

Julian whispered, "And he was going to expose them."

Nathan nodded.

"The factory fire happened three weeks after Thomas copied internal files."

Ava felt cold.

"You think he was killed."

"I know the fire was not an accident."

Julian stood.

"My father was there."

"Richard helped Thomas steal the files."

Ava looked between them.

"Then why did Richard survive?"

Nathan's expression became complicated.

"Because Thomas went back for him."

The newspaper story.

Thomas Bennett had saved Richard Mercer.

Now the reason carried a darker meaning.

Two men had tried to expose Halcyon.

One died.

The other built Mercer Aerospace with whatever evidence survived.

Julian asked, "Why create the trust?"

Nathan answered.

"Guilt."

Ava looked at him.

"Richard promised Thomas that if anything happened, his family would be protected."

"But Julian wasn't known to be Thomas's son yet."

Nathan looked at Julian.

"Richard suspected."

Julian's voice became quiet.

"My mother told him?"

"Eventually."

Ava felt the entire history shift.

Richard had raised Julian while knowing another man might be his biological father.

Then left the company to Julian's first child.

Not simply repayment.

Protection.

A transfer of what Thomas had helped create.

"Why Owen?" Ava asked. "Why not Julian?"

Nathan looked uncomfortable.

"Because Richard didn't trust Julian."

Julian did not react.

Ava did.

"Why?"

"Richard believed someone inside Mercer Dynamics had already been compromised."

"By Halcyon?"

Nathan nodded.

"He thought Julian might be manipulated before he understood the truth."

Julian laughed bitterly.

"He was right."

Ava knew he meant Celeste.

But perhaps there was more.

Detective Walsh entered with new information.

"We identified the unknown fingerprint from the winter room."

Ava turned.

"Who?"

Walsh placed a photograph on the table.

An older woman.

Elegant silver hair.

Pale eyes.

Ava did not recognize her.

Julian did.

His face drained of color.

"Margaret."

Ava looked at him.

"Who is she?"

Julian stared at the photograph.

"My father's private secretary."

Marcus added quietly, "For twenty-seven years."

Ava remembered hearing the name.

Margaret Voss had managed Richard's schedule, correspondence, travel and private records.

She had retired after his death.

Walsh said, "She has no recent address."

Marcus looked grim.

"Because Margaret Voss never existed before 1992."

Ava stared.

"What?"

"No birth record under that name. No school history. No tax history before employment at Mercer Aerospace."

Julian whispered, "Halcyon."

Marcus nodded.

"Possibly."

Ava looked at the photograph.

A woman who had stood beside Richard for nearly three decades.

A woman who would know every secret.

Every account.

Every marriage.

Every child.

Every trust.

"Where is she?"

Walsh answered, "We don't know."

Then Ava's phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Walsh signaled her to answer.

Ava put the call on speaker.

"Hello?"

An older female voice responded.

"Ms. Bennett."

Ava looked at the photograph.

"Margaret?"

A soft laugh.

"So Julian finally showed you my picture."

Julian leaned toward the phone.

"Where are you?"

"Still impatient."

Ava interrupted.

"What do you want?"

The woman became serious.

"Owen."

Julian stood.

Ava's blood went cold.

"You will never get near him."

"I already have."

Ava remembered the hidden camera in Owen's bedroom.

Her hands shook.

Margaret continued.

"Do you want to know why Richard tested your son?"

Ava forced herself to answer.

"Yes."

"Then ask Nathan what he removed from Owen's newborn screening."

Nathan's face turned white.

Every person in the room looked at him.

May you like

Margaret laughed softly.

Then the line went dead.
