Chapter 14 - the woman who came back twice)

Police arrested Celeste before midnight.
She had been hiding in a rented house outside New Haven under a false identity.
This time she did not cry.
She did not claim Sebastian forced her.
She did not ask for sympathy.
She simply looked tired.
Detective Walsh entered the interview room.
"You lied about being kidnapped."
Celeste nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I needed you to believe Sebastian was the only threat."
"Why?"
"So Margaret could move the archive."
"Did she?"
"No."
Walsh leaned forward.
"Where is Sebastian?"
Celeste smiled faintly.
"You still don't understand him."
"Help me."
"Sebastian never wanted the archive."
"What did he want?"
"Julian."
Walsh frowned.
Celeste continued.
"He wanted Julian to lose everything Richard gave him."
"The company?"
"The family."
Ava watched the interview from another room.
Julian sat beside her.
Celeste's words hurt because some had already become true.
Julian had nearly lost Owen.
His marriage was finished.
His company was under investigation.
His father might not even be dead.
Walsh asked, "Why involve Owen?"
Celeste looked toward the one-way glass.
Ava wondered if she knew they were there.
"Because Owen was the only thing Julian loved more than winning."
Julian looked down.
Celeste continued.
"Sebastian wanted him to feel powerless."
Walsh's voice sharpened.
"And you helped him."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Celeste was silent for a long time.
"At first for money."
"Then?"
"For fear."
"Of Sebastian?"
"No."
"Margaret?"
Celeste looked directly toward the glass.
"Richard."
Ava felt Julian become completely still.
Walsh asked, "Richard Mercer is dead."
Celeste smiled.
"Are you sure?"
Julian stood.
Ava grabbed his sleeve.
"Stay."
On screen, Celeste continued.
"I met him seven months after his funeral."
Walsh did not react.
"Where?"
"Zurich."
"Why?"
"He wanted to know whether I loved Julian."
Ava stared.
Julian whispered, "No."
Celeste said, "I told him yes."
"Was that true?"
"At the time."
"What did Richard want?"
"Someone inside the house."
Ava's skin crawled.
Walsh asked, "He recruited you?"
"Not exactly."
"Explain."
"He knew Sebastian was planning something. He asked me to report unusual contact."
"Then Sebastian contacted you."
"Yes."
"And you switched sides."
Celeste looked ashamed.
"He offered proof that Richard had manipulated Julian's life."
"What proof?"
"That Richard arranged the first meeting between Julian and Ava."
Ava's grip on Julian's sleeve loosened.
"What?" she whispered.
Celeste continued.
"He wanted Julian to marry someone from the Bennett line."
Walsh's expression finally changed.
"Why?"
"To produce Owen."
The room became silent.
Ava felt physically ill.
Julian stared at the screen.
Their meeting.
A charity architecture event.
A spilled glass of wine.
A conversation that lasted four hours.
A date three days later.
A love story they had believed belonged to them.
Had Richard built that too?
Walsh asked, "How could Richard know they would marry?"
"He didn't."
Celeste shrugged.
"He created opportunities. Invitations. mutual friends. job connections. He pushed probabilities."
Ava thought of all the coincidences.
Julian investing in the same restoration foundation where she worked.
Ava being moved to the donor relations team.
The invitation to the gala.
Julian's seat beside hers.
Tiny invisible hands arranging lives.
Julian sat down again.
"I hate him."
Ava looked at him.
He had never spoken about his father that way.
Walsh asked, "Where is Richard?"
Celeste shook her head.
"I don't know."
"Who does?"
"Margaret."
"Where is she?"
"I don't know."
Walsh leaned forward.
"You are facing child endangerment, conspiracy, unlawful surveillance, obstruction and potentially kidnapping-related charges."
Celeste's eyes filled with tears.
Ava felt nothing.
Walsh continued.
"This is the moment where you decide whether you spend the next decade protecting people who abandoned you."
Celeste looked down.
Then whispered, "There is a house."
"Where?"
"Maine."
"What house?"
"Richard called it Black Pine."
Julian immediately looked at Ava.
She knew the name.
Owen had said something strange two months earlier after returning from Julian's house.
Black tree house.
Ava had assumed he meant a toy.
Walsh asked, "What is at Black Pine?"
Celeste looked frightened.
"The original Halcyon archive."
"Anything else?"
"Richard."
The word seemed to stop time.
Forty-eight hours later police reached Black Pine.
The house was empty.
No Richard.
No Margaret.
No Sebastian.
But the archive was real.
Thousands of encrypted storage drives.
Files documenting decades of private genetic manipulation.
There was enough evidence to open federal investigations across multiple states.
Celeste agreed to cooperate.
Nathan pleaded guilty to charges connected to the winter room and unlawful testing.
Several members of Mercer security were arrested for helping Sebastian access the villa.
A family judge granted Ava temporary sole physical custody of Owen while allowing Julian supervised contact that could expand following evaluation.
Julian did not fight the order.
He thanked the judge.
That evening, for the first time since the snow night, Owen laughed without checking the doors.
Ava watched him sit on the living-room carpet with Julian, building a wooden train track.
Julian handed him a bridge.
Owen placed it upside down.
Julian pretended to be confused.
Owen laughed harder.
Ava stood in the kitchen doorway.
Something inside her loosened.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But hope.
Julian looked up.
Their eyes met.
He did not ask her to return.
She was grateful.
Some things should not be repaired quickly.
Some things should never return to what they were.
They could become something else.
Something more honest.
Later, after Julian left, Ava tucked Owen into bed.
"No lock?" he asked.
"No lock."
"Snow Lady gone?"
Ava brushed his hair back.
"Yes."
"Ring man gone?"
She hesitated.
"He's hiding."
Owen frowned.
"Bad hiding?"
Ava smiled sadly.
"Yes."
He hugged the blue elephant.
"Will Daddy find him?"
Ava kissed his forehead.
"Maybe."
Owen closed his eyes.
Within minutes he was asleep.
Ava stood to leave.
Then she noticed something beneath the blue elephant.
A folded piece of paper.
She opened it.
It was a child's drawing.
Owen had drawn three adults.
Mommy.
Daddy.
A tall man with a black ring.
But there was also a fourth person.
An older man.
Gray hair.
Standing behind the others.
Ava returned to the bedside.
"Owen."
He opened sleepy eyes.
"Who is this?"
She pointed.
Owen looked at the drawing.
"Grandpa."
Ava's heart stopped.
"You never met Grandpa Richard."
Owen shook his head.
"Yes."
Ava sat down.
"When?"
"Cold house."
Her hands began to shake.
"What cold house?"
Owen pointed downward.
"Room."
Ava felt all the warmth leave the bedroom.
"Was Grandpa in the winter room?"
Owen nodded.
May you like
Then whispered something that changed the entire investigation.
"Grandpa told Ring Man to stop."
