Chapter 9 - The Kitchen Trap)

Claire entered through the front door at exactly 6:02.

Derek greeted her as if nothing were wrong.

"Hey."

Claire did not answer.

Rachel stood beside the stove.

Dark red blouse.

Black pants.

The steel ladle in her hand.

She pretended to stir a pot.

There was no food inside it.

Claire noticed.

So did the hidden phone.

"Where's Noah's inhaler?" Claire asked.

Derek pointed toward the counter.

It was there.

Placed deliberately where Claire would have to walk deeper into the kitchen.

Claire remained by the doorway.

"Bring it to me."

Derek smiled.

"It's right there."

"You bring it."

Rachel sighed loudly.

"This is ridiculous."

Claire looked at her.

"I didn't come to talk to you."

"You're in my house acting like you're scared."

Claire almost laughed.

"Your house?"

Rachel glanced at Derek.

A mistake.

Small.

Captured.

Derek stepped in quickly.

"She didn't mean that."

"I know exactly what she meant."

Rachel put down the ladle.

For one second Claire thought the plan had changed.

Then Rachel walked toward her.

"You've made Derek's life miserable."

Claire remained still.

"Move."

"He works all day while you sit here."

"Move."

"He told me everything."

"I bet he did."

Rachel stopped inches away.

"He said you haven't been right since you got pregnant."

There it was.

The narrative.

Claire looked past her at Derek.

He was holding his phone.

Camera pointed down.

Not recording yet.

Waiting.

Claire understood.

They needed her reaction.

Rachel leaned closer.

"Maybe after the baby comes they'll put you somewhere."

Claire's anger surged.

She forced it down.

"Move."

Rachel smiled.

"Or maybe they won't let you keep the baby."

Claire's hands tightened.

Derek lifted his phone slightly.

Still waiting.

Claire stepped sideways.

Rachel blocked her.

"Don't touch me," Claire said clearly.

"Who's touching you?"

Rachel bumped Claire's shoulder.

Claire stepped backward.

Rachel did it again.

Claire raised one hand.

Derek's phone came up.

Now recording.

Rachel shoved Claire.

Not hard.

Claire caught the island.

"Stop."

Rachel shoved again.

Claire pushed Rachel's shoulder away.

Immediately Derek shouted.

"Claire!"

He rushed forward with the phone.

"Don't attack her!"

Rachel stumbled dramatically against the counter.

Claire stared at them.

It was exactly the plan.

Derek's camera had captured Claire's push.

Nothing before.

Rachel grabbed her arm.

Claire pulled free.

"Get away from me."

Rachel slapped the counter.

"You're insane!"

Derek kept filming.

Claire backed toward the kitchen drawer.

Rachel followed.

Derek said, "Rachel, leave her alone."

His performance was almost convincing.

Then he moved.

Not between them.

Away.

He created an open path from Rachel to Claire.

Exactly as discussed on the hidden recording.

Rachel saw it.

So did Claire.

The stainless steel ladle remained near the stove.

Rachel reached for it.

Claire's pulse exploded.

"Don't."

Rachel lifted it.

Derek's phone lowered.

The performance was entering its next stage.

Rachel whispered, "You ruined everything."

Claire backed against the counter.

"No."

Rachel took another step.

Claire looked at Derek.

"Stop her."

Derek did nothing.

Rachel raised the ladle.

Claire screamed.

That scream changed everything.

Inside the drawer, the old phone detected the sustained sound.

The emergency application activated.

Encrypted upload.

Automatic alert.

Vanessa's phone lit up inside her car three blocks away.

Emergency threshold reached.

Live stream active.

Vanessa looked at Officer Ellis.

"Now."

Back in the kitchen, Claire had no idea whether the alert worked.

Rachel swung.

Claire twisted away.

The ladle struck the counter with a metallic crack.

No serious contact.

Rachel became angrier.

Derek hissed, "Enough."

Claire almost believed he was stopping her.

Then Rachel looked at him.

"Enough?"

Derek glanced toward Claire.

"She needs to react."

Claire heard it.

Rachel heard it.

The hidden phone heard it.

Claire moved toward the hall.

Rachel blocked her again.

"You're not leaving."

Claire shouted, "MOVE."

Upstairs was empty.

Emily and Noah were safe with Vanessa's neighbor.

But Derek believed they were arriving soon.

He smiled.

"You see? This is what she's like."

Claire stared at him.

"There's nobody here to perform for."

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

Rachel tightened her grip on the ladle.

"What does that mean?"

Claire suddenly understood something.

Derek had not told Rachel the children were absent.

Rachel thought they were upstairs.

Derek had lied to everyone.

Claire said quietly, "The kids aren't here."

Rachel looked at Derek.

"What?"

Derek's face hardened.

"Claire."

Rachel turned fully.

"You said they were upstairs."

"I said they'd be here."

"No, you didn't."

Their plan fractured.

For a moment Claire saw an opportunity.

Then Derek snapped.

"Just finish it."

Rachel stared.

Claire stared.

The hidden phone recorded.

Derek realized what he had said.

Too late.

Rachel turned back toward Claire.

Fear had replaced some of her anger.

But she was trapped now too.

Claire protected her stomach.

"Rachel, don't."

Rachel's face twisted.

"You think you can take everything?"

Claire saw movement through the hall.

Not yet.

Still too far.

Rachel raised the ladle again.

May you like

Derek smiled.

And the front door exploded open.
