Chapter 4 - The Secret Behind the Loan)

The next morning Claire reopened the drawer.
The old phone was still there.
Derek had not found it.
She should have felt relieved.
Instead, she felt watched.
Vanessa told her to pack emergency bags for herself and the children.
Claire resisted.
"If I pack bags, I'm admitting my marriage is over."
"No. You're admitting you need options."
"I don't want the kids frightened."
"They don't need to know."
"What if Derek finds them?"
"Keep them at my house."
Claire stared out the window.
Derek had gone to work early.
Emily and Noah were watching cartoons.
The kitchen looked peaceful.
"I keep thinking maybe we can fix this."
Vanessa's expression softened.
"Claire, you can love who someone used to be without trusting who they've become."
That sentence stayed with Claire.
She packed three small bags.
Then she found something that changed the situation again.
Noah lost a toy truck beneath Derek's office desk.
Claire crawled down to retrieve it.
From the floor, she noticed a rectangular shadow beneath a filing cabinet.
An envelope.
She pulled it out.
Inside were receipts.
Cash withdrawals.
Hotel bills.
Jewelry.
And a photocopy of Claire's signature.
Except Claire had never signed the paper attached to it.
It was an authorization connected to Bennett Property Solutions.
Rachel's company with Derek.
Claire called Vanessa immediately.
"Don't touch anything else," Vanessa said.
"I already touched it."
"Put it inside a clean plastic folder. Photograph exactly where you found it."
"What does the signature mean?"
"Maybe nothing. Maybe everything."
Claire photographed the document.
Vanessa arrived with the forensic accountant, a quiet man named Peter Sloan.
He compared the signature with tax forms Claire had actually signed.
"It could fool someone who wasn't looking closely," he said.
Claire felt nauseated.
"Can they use it?"
"They may have already tried."
By evening, Peter found the answer.
A transfer request for seventy five thousand dollars had been submitted to a lender three weeks earlier.
It included Claire's forged authorization.
The lender had delayed processing because another document was missing.
Derek needed Claire's genuine signature now because the first attempt had failed.
Suddenly the pressure made sense.
Rachel's visit.
The threats.
The refinancing papers.
The family assessment appointment.
Derek needed money.
And Claire had become the obstacle.
Vanessa's phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
"What?"
Claire asked.
Vanessa held up one finger.
Then she walked into the hallway.
When she returned, she closed the kitchen door behind her.
"Peter's colleague found another filing."
Claire stood very still.
"What filing?"
"An application connected to a life insurance policy."
Claire stared.
"Whose?"
"Yours."
The room became completely silent.
"How much?"
"One point five million."
Claire laughed weakly.
"We've had insurance since Emily was born."
"Yes. Two hundred fifty thousand."
"So this is another policy?"
"Applied for six weeks ago."
"Who applied?"
"Derek."
"Can he do that?"
"He can begin an application. It should require medical information and consent before becoming active."
"Did I consent?"
"Not that you remember."
Claire stared toward the kitchen drawer.
The old phone suddenly felt too small.
Too fragile.
Vanessa came closer.
"I need you and the children to stay with me."
"No."
"Claire."
"If I leave now, he'll know."
"Good."
"Then he'll hide everything."
"My priority is not evidence. It's you."
"What about the kids?"
"Exactly."
Claire looked through the glass door toward the backyard.
Emily had drawn chalk flowers on the patio.
Noah's plastic truck sat upside down near the steps.
This was their home.
She hated Derek for making it feel like enemy territory.
"I want one more day."
Vanessa shook her head.
"One night."
"No."
"Vanessa, please."
"Why?"
"Because tomorrow Derek has a meeting with the lender."
"How do you know?"
"It was on his calendar."
"That is not your problem."
"It becomes my problem if he uses my name."
Vanessa studied her.
Then Claire said the truth.
"And I need to know how far this goes."
Vanessa looked furious.
Not at Claire.
At the situation.
"One night."
Claire nodded.
"You keep your phone on you. The old phone recording whenever Derek enters the kitchen. If Rachel comes over, you leave."
"I will."
"If Derek raises his voice, you leave."
"Okay."
"If you feel unsafe for any reason, you leave."
"I understand."
Vanessa did not believe her.
Before leaving, she opened the drawer and checked the old phone.
The battery was full.
Upload active.
Emergency contact active.
Then she turned to Claire.
"Do not try to be brave."
Claire looked toward her children.
"I'm not trying to be brave."
"What are you trying to be?"
Claire's eyes filled.
"Finished being fooled."

That night Derek came home at 11:32.
Rachel was with him.
