Chapter 7 - The Trap Begins)

Vanessa did not allow Claire to return home that night.

Instead, Claire replied that she needed time.

Derek became patient.

Too patient.

Take all the time you need.

I love you.

The kids need both parents.

We can fix this.

By noon, he asked whether she would come home the following afternoon.

Rachel wants to clear the air.

Claire showed Vanessa.

"He's setting something up."

Vanessa nodded.

"Likely."

"How do we prove it?"

"We don't walk into danger just to prove danger exists."

"But if he does this to someone else?"

"Claire."

"He could destroy me in court."

"The recordings already help."

"Not enough."

Vanessa knew she was right.

Derek's lawyer could claim the recordings showed marital arguments.

Rachel could deny meaning what she said.

The custody petition could become a slow battle of competing stories.

The strongest evidence would be Derek and Rachel acting according to their plan.

But Vanessa would not risk Claire or the baby.

So she designed something else.

She contacted a detective she knew from a previous domestic violence case.

Officer Mark Ellis listened to the recordings.

His partner, Officer Janet Brooks, listened too.

Neither made promises.

There had not yet been an attack severe enough to justify the dramatic intervention Claire wanted.

But they agreed the situation was concerning.

"Call if she returns to the house," Ellis said.

Vanessa showed him the old phone system.

"If this emergency alert activates, you'll receive my call immediately."

"Don't treat technology as protection."

"I don't."

"Then don't send your sister into that house alone."

"I won't."

Claire interrupted.

"I live there."

Ellis looked at her.

"That doesn't make it safe."

The plan became simple.

Claire would return the next afternoon only to collect several items and tell Derek she wanted a formal separation.

Vanessa would wait five minutes away.

The officers would remain nearby if available.

The old kitchen phone would record.

Claire's regular phone would remain in her pocket.

Emily and Noah would stay with a trusted neighbor, Mrs. Palmer, who lived across the street.

Then Emily refused.

"I want my backpack."

Claire knelt.

"I'll bring it."

"My blue one."

"I know."

"My drawing is inside."

"I'll get everything."

Emily looked close to tears.

"Don't go alone."

Claire hugged her.

"I'm not."

That promise mattered.

At 2:10 the next afternoon, Claire entered the house.

Derek was sitting at the kitchen table.

No Rachel.

"Where is she?"

"Not coming."

Claire stayed near the doorway.

"I thought she wanted to apologize."

"She changed her mind."

Claire looked toward the drawer.

Slightly open.

Good.

Derek noticed.

"Coffee?"

"No."

"Sit."

"I'd rather stand."

Derek smiled.

"Still scared?"

"I'm here to collect things."

"And talk."

"We can talk through lawyers."

His smile disappeared.

"Vanessa wants that."

"I want that."

"You don't know what you want."

Claire's hand moved toward her phone.

Derek noticed.

He leaned back.

"I'm not going to touch you."

"Good."

"You're making me sound like a monster."

"I don't need to make you anything."

For almost twenty minutes, they talked.

Derek apologized.

Then blamed Claire.

Then apologized again.

Then blamed Vanessa.

He admitted the affair but called it a mistake.

He denied forgery.

He denied financial fraud.

He claimed Rachel had exaggerated everything.

Claire never raised her voice.

Finally Derek said the sentence Vanessa later called the turning point.

"I need you to come back tomorrow."

"Why?"

"For the children."

"They're with me."

"They need their house."

"They'll have a house."

Derek's eyes hardened.

"This house is mine too."

"I know."

"You don't get to take everything."

"I'm not."

"You're taking the kids."

"We'll let the court decide."

His breathing changed.

Then he controlled it.

"Tomorrow."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

"Rachel will be here."

"Then definitely no."

"She owes you an apology."

Claire almost laughed.

Derek looked at the drawer.

This time Claire saw it clearly.

He knew.

Her heart stopped.

Derek stood.

Claire backed toward the hall.

He crossed the kitchen.

Not toward her.

Toward the drawer.

He pulled it open.

Claire's skin went cold.

Derek reached inside.

His hand moved past the towels.

Then stopped.

The old phone was gone.

Claire stared.

Derek turned.

"What were you expecting?"

She could not answer.

He smiled.

"I found it this morning."

Claire immediately reached for her own phone.

Derek remained still.

"I didn't destroy it."

"Where is it?"

"Somewhere safe."

Claire walked backward.

"I'm leaving."

"You'll get it tomorrow."

"No."

"I think you'll come back."

"Why would I?"

Derek's smile returned.

"Because Emily's school tablet is upstairs."

Claire froze.

He continued.

"Her backpack too."

Claire knew immediately something was wrong.

She had seen Emily's backpack at Vanessa's house.

At least she thought she had.

Derek watched her think.

Then he said quietly, "You're forgetting things again."

Claire left without answering.

When she reached Vanessa's car, her sister asked, "Where's the phone?"

"Derek found it."

Vanessa cursed.

Claire stared back at the house.

"He thinks he won."

Vanessa started the car.

"Did he?"

Claire turned.

May you like

Vanessa was smiling.

"The phone you hid in the drawer yesterday was not the original."
