Chapter 10 - The SOS)

Vanessa entered first.

Officer Ellis and Officer Brooks followed.

The scene changed in less than three seconds.

Ellis seized Rachel's wrist.

Brooks positioned herself between Derek and Claire.

The ladle hit the floor.

Vanessa rushed toward her sister.

"NOBODY TOUCHES HER AGAIN."

Derek's expression moved from shock to calculation.

Claire watched it happen.

He was already choosing his new story.

Rachel started shouting.

"She attacked me."

Derek immediately joined.

"Claire started the whole thing."

Officer Brooks looked toward Claire.

"Ma'am, step back."

Claire obeyed.

Her legs shook.

Derek pointed.

"She's unstable. I have court documents. She came here and attacked Rachel."

Rachel nodded rapidly.

"She shoved me."

"She did," Derek said. "I recorded it."

He lifted his phone.

For a moment, confidence returned to his face.

Vanessa looked at Claire.

Claire pointed toward the drawer.

"Open it."

Derek went still.

Vanessa crossed the kitchen.

She pulled the drawer open.

The hidden phone was there.

Its screen showed a live recording.

Derek lunged.

Officer Brooks blocked him immediately.

"Sir, stay where you are."

"That's my property."

Claire stared at him.

"No. It's mine."

Vanessa lifted the phone.

Rachel stopped talking.

Claire said, "Play the beginning."

Vanessa did.

The officers heard Rachel arrive holding the ladle.

They heard Derek tell her where Claire would stand.

They heard Rachel ask what if the children saw.

They heard Derek answer that they would believe what he told them.

Derek began speaking over the audio.

"This is taken out of context."

Nobody answered.

Then the recording reached the confrontation.

Rachel deliberately bumping Claire.

The first shove.

Derek waiting to start his own phone until Claire pushed back.

Officer Ellis looked at Derek's phone.

Then at the hidden phone.

The difference was obvious.

One recording began with Claire's defensive push.

The other showed everything that came before.

Derek's face tightened.

Then the recording reached his sentence.

"She needs to react."

Rachel turned toward him.

"You said enough."

Derek hissed, "Shut up."

Officer Brooks said, "Do not speak to each other right now."

Rachel stared at Derek with sudden hatred.

Vanessa kept playing.

Then came the line Derek had forgotten.

"Just finish it."

The kitchen became silent.

Derek lunged again.

Not toward Claire.

Toward the phone.

Vanessa pulled it out of reach.

"You smiled while she did it."

Derek froze.

The recording continued.

Claire's scream.

The door opening.

Vanessa's voice.

Then the present.

Every word being spoken now was also captured.

Derek finally understood.

This was not only evidence of the attack.

It was evidence of the setup.

The selective recording.

The false custody narrative.

The attempt to provoke Claire.

Officer Ellis picked up the steel ladle using gloves.

Rachel's anger collapsed into panic.

"Derek said she wouldn't get hurt."

Derek looked at her sharply.

"Stop talking."

"He said this would help us get the house."

"Rachel."

"He said Claire would just look crazy."

"Shut up."

Officer Brooks stepped closer to Derek.

"Sir."

Derek finally stopped.

Claire pressed one hand against the counter.

Vanessa whispered, "Are you hurt?"

"My arm."

"The baby?"

"I don't know."

Vanessa's face changed.

"We're going to the hospital."

Claire nodded.

As she turned, she saw Derek.

For the first time in eleven years, she did not see her husband.

She saw a frightened man calculating how many of his lies had been recorded.

And that frightened man made one final mistake.

He looked at Rachel and said, "You were supposed to follow the plan."

Nobody in the room missed it.
