Chapter 13 - The Money Behind the Marriage)

The notebook broke open the financial case.

Peter spent two days matching Derek's handwritten numbers to bank activity.

What emerged was worse than a failing company.

Derek had used money from new investors to cover earlier obligations.

He had overstated assets.

Submitted questionable collateral.

Attempted to use Claire's authorization without permission.

Transferred money into accounts connected to Rachel.

None of it had begun because of Rachel.

That surprised Claire.

The first irregular transaction dated back almost three years.

Before the affair.

Rachel had joined later.

The betrayal was older than Claire knew.

Derek had been losing money and hiding it long before another woman entered the picture.

Rachel became both lover and partner in the deception.

According to messages she eventually provided, Derek first promised they would start a new company together.

Then he promised they would leave their spouses.

Rachel was divorced already.

Derek was not.

As his financial problems worsened, Rachel pushed him to leave Claire.

Derek responded that divorce would expose the books.

So they needed Claire cooperative.

Then they needed her discredited.

Finally they needed her frightened.

Rachel's attorney turned over a voice message.

Derek speaking.

"If Claire signs, we walk away clean. If she doesn't, she becomes the reason everything falls apart."

Claire listened once.

Never again.

Prosecutors and financial investigators took over the business evidence.

Claire did not follow every development.

She no longer wanted Derek's crimes to occupy every hour of her life.

She focused on practical things.

Therapy for Emily.

A child counselor for Noah if needed.

Prenatal appointments.

Changing locks.

Separating accounts.

Selling one of their vehicles.

Learning passwords she had allowed Derek to control for years.

Every ordinary task felt like recovering a small piece of herself.

Rachel eventually admitted her role in the kitchen setup.

She did not claim innocence.

Her lawyer argued that Derek manipulated her.

Claire did not fully accept that.

Rachel had chosen to threaten a pregnant woman.

She had chosen to terrify children.

She had chosen to raise the ladle.

Whatever Derek promised, Rachel had made decisions.

Still, Claire agreed to one request.

Rachel wanted to apologize.

Vanessa advised against meeting.

Claire surprised her.

"I want to hear it."

"Why?"

"Because I want to know whether she's sorry for what she did or sorry Derek lost."

They met in a conference room with attorneys present.

Rachel looked different.

No makeup.

Hair tied back.

Plain clothes.

Smaller somehow.

She sat across from Claire.

For several seconds neither spoke.

Finally Rachel said, "I thought he loved me."

Claire almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because Rachel had chosen the wrong opening.

"This isn't about whether he loved you."

Rachel lowered her eyes.

"I know."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

"You stood in my kitchen with my children nearby and raised a metal ladle at me."

Rachel swallowed.

"I know."

"You helped him build a story that I was unstable."

"I know."

"You watched him move money."

"I didn't know everything."

"But you knew enough."

Rachel nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Claire waited.

Rachel's eyes filled.

"He told me you were cruel to him."

Claire said nothing.

"He said you controlled the children. He said you refused to let him leave. He said you threatened him."

"And you believed him?"

"At first."

"Later?"

Rachel looked away.

"Later I knew some of it wasn't true."

There it was.

The important answer.

Claire leaned back.

"So when you came into my kitchen, you already knew."

Rachel cried quietly.

"I hated you."

"Why?"

"Because every time he failed to leave you, he blamed you. And I needed it to be your fault. Otherwise I had wasted almost two years believing him."

Claire considered that.

Then she said, "You were angry at me because the truth about him would have forced you to face the truth about yourself."

Rachel looked up.

Claire stood.

"I hope you cooperate fully."

"Claire."

She stopped.

Rachel's voice shook.

"I'm sorry."

Claire looked at her.

"I believe you're sorry now."

Rachel cried harder.

Claire continued.

"But forgiveness is not the same as pretending consequences shouldn't happen."

Then she left.

Outside, Vanessa waited.

"Feel better?"

"No."

"Worse?"

"No."

"What then?"

Claire thought.

"Finished."

Vanessa nodded.

That evening Claire returned home.

Emily was doing homework.

Noah was drawing.

The kitchen drawer stood closed.

Claire opened it.

Empty.

She remembered the hidden phone.

The scream.

The door bursting open.

The moment Derek's smile disappeared.

Then she noticed an envelope on the counter.

No stamp.

No return address.

Her name handwritten.

Claire called Vanessa before touching it.

Inside was a copy of another document.

Derek's signature.

A property sale agreement.

Dated two days before the attack.

The buyer was a company Claire did not recognize.

Vanessa recognized the address.

Her expression changed.

"What?"

Claire asked.

May you like

Vanessa looked at her.

"This company belongs to Derek's attorney's brother."
