Chapter 2 - The First Paper)

The document Derek wanted signed looked ordinary.

That frightened Vanessa more than if it had looked suspicious.

Claire sent her sister photographs of all eight pages the following morning.

Vanessa called seven minutes later.

"Do not sign this."

Claire was standing in the grocery store parking lot.

Her stomach tightened.

"What is it?"

"It's presented as a refinancing authorization."

"That's what Derek said."

"It also gives broad authority to Bennett Residential Holdings."

"His company?"

"One of them."

Claire gripped the steering wheel.

"Broad authority for what?"

"Your share of the house proceeds if certain financial conditions occur."

"I don't understand."

"Neither will most people who read it quickly. That's the point."

Vanessa paused.

"Claire, did you know Derek created another company four months ago?"

"No."

"Did you know Rachel Cole is listed as an authorized officer?"

Claire's mouth became dry.

Cars moved around her in the parking lot.

Someone pushed a shopping cart past the windshield.

The world continued normally while Claire's understanding of her marriage cracked open.

"No."

Vanessa's voice softened.

"Come to my office."

Claire did.

Vanessa had already pulled public business filings.

Bennett Residential Holdings had been registered eleven years ago.

Derek's construction company.

Bennett Property Solutions had been created four months earlier.

The registered address belonged to a mailbox store.

Rachel Cole was secretary.

Derek Bennett was president.

Claire stared at Rachel's name.

"Maybe she's actually working with him."

"Maybe."

"You don't believe that."

"I believe paperwork before I believe explanations."

Vanessa showed her another page.

A commercial credit filing.

Derek's newer company had borrowed more than four hundred thousand dollars.

Claire almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because the number was too large to feel real.

"Derek doesn't have four hundred thousand dollars."

"No."

"Then how did he qualify?"

"I'm trying to find out."

Claire looked at the refinancing document again.

"Is he trying to use the house?"

"Possibly."

"Our house?"

"Possibly."

"Where my children sleep?"

Vanessa reached across the desk.

"Claire, listen to me. Do not confront him yet."

"I want to ask him."

"I know."

"Maybe there's an explanation."

"There might be."

"You don't think so."

Vanessa leaned back.

"I think a man who wants his pregnant wife to sign away financial control should explain every sentence before handing her a pen."

That night Derek asked again.

The children were eating pasta at the kitchen table.

Rachel was not there.

Derek stood at the counter and tapped the folder.

"Did you sign it?"

"I want Vanessa to review it."

His expression changed immediately.

"Why?"

"Because she's a lawyer."

"I know what she is."

Emily looked up from her plate.

Claire kept her voice calm.

"I don't understand some of the language."

"You don't need to."

"Then explain it."

Derek laughed quietly.

"Claire, I run the business."

"This involves our house."

"It protects our house."

"How?"

Derek's jaw tightened.

"You've never cared about business before."

"I care about our home."

"You're making this difficult."

"No. I'm asking a question."

Derek picked up the folder.

For one second Claire thought he might throw it.

Instead he leaned closer.

"You've been listening to Vanessa too much."

Claire said nothing.

His voice became quieter.

"She has always wanted you to distrust me."

"No, she hasn't."

"She never liked me."

"That isn't true."

"She likes control."

Claire almost answered.

Then she noticed Emily staring.

She stopped.

Derek followed her gaze.

His expression softened immediately.

"Daddy's not angry, sweetheart."

Emily nodded without believing him.

That night, long after the children were asleep, Claire heard Derek speaking on the back patio.

The kitchen window was open two inches.

Rachel's name floated through.

Claire moved closer.

Derek's voice was low.

"She didn't sign."

Pause.

"No."

Another pause.

"I said no."

Then Derek looked through the window.

Claire stepped away before he saw her.

The next morning, Rachel appeared at the house carrying two coffees.

Derek had already left.

Claire opened the door but did not invite her inside.

"He's not here."

"I know."

Rachel smiled.

"I came to see you."

Claire felt something cold move through her chest.

"Why?"

Rachel took a sip of coffee.

"Derek says you're having trouble with the paperwork."

"That's between Derek and me."

"Actually, it affects the company."

"Then Derek can discuss it with me."

Rachel's smile disappeared.

"You think Vanessa is going to save you from everything?"

Claire stared at her.

"I didn't mention Vanessa."

Rachel realized her mistake.

Only for a second.

Then she recovered.

"Derek did."

Claire stepped backward and began closing the door.

Rachel put one hand against it.

Not enough to force it open.

Enough to send a message.

"You should sign the papers, Claire."

Claire's pulse accelerated.

"Move your hand."

Rachel held her gaze.

"You're making people very nervous."

From behind Claire came a small voice.

"Mom?"

Emily stood in the hallway.

Rachel removed her hand immediately.

Her smile returned.

"Have a nice day."

Claire closed the door and locked it.

Emily looked up.

"Why doesn't Daddy's friend like you?"

Claire forced a smile.

"Adults get frustrated sometimes."

Emily looked at the closed door.

"She said you were in the way."

Claire froze.

"When?"

"Yesterday."

"Where?"

"Outside Daddy's office."

"Who was she talking to?"

"Daddy."

Claire crouched slowly.

"What exactly did she say?"

Emily frowned, trying to remember.

"She said, 'Your wife is in the way.'"

Claire felt the baby move.

Then Emily added the part that Claire would later repeat word for word to Vanessa.

"Daddy said, 'Not for much longer.'"
