Chapter 8 - Vanessa's Second Phone)

The original old phone had been removed from the kitchen the previous night.

Vanessa had replaced it with another device.

A decoy.

Claire stared at her sister.

"You didn't tell me."

"I didn't want you acting like you knew."

"What if he opened it?"

"He did."

"What's on it?"

"Nothing useful."

Claire began to understand.

"The real phone?"

"In the drawer."

"But he searched it."

"Not the drawer he thinks."

The Bennett kitchen had two shallow drawers beneath the long counter.

One held towels.

The other, directly beside it, held old instruction manuals, batteries, and random household objects.

Vanessa had moved the real phone into the second drawer and angled its camera through a small gap behind a stack of takeout menus.

Derek had found the decoy exactly where expected.

Claire shook her head.

"You are terrifying."

"Occupational benefit."

"Why would you risk leaving the real one?"

"Because now Derek believes the kitchen isn't recording."

Claire looked back at the house.

For the first time, she understood the advantage.

Derek felt safe.

Safe people talked.

The next morning, Vanessa reviewed six hours of footage.

Most showed an empty kitchen.

At 10:12 p.m., Derek entered with Rachel.

They stood near the counter.

The microphone captured every word.

Rachel sounded furious.

"You said she would sign."

"She will."

"No, she won't."

"Then we move to the other plan."

Claire stopped breathing.

Vanessa turned up the volume.

Rachel said, "I don't like it."

Derek laughed.

"You've been begging me to get her out for a year."

"Not like this."

"She'll be fine."

"What if I hit too hard?"

Claire closed her eyes.

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

Derek continued.

"Use the ladle. Metal looks worse than it is if you don't hit the head."

Claire opened her eyes.

Rachel whispered, "You said you'd stop me."

"I will."

"When?"

"After the kids see."

Silence.

Then Rachel asked, "And the camera?"

Derek replied, "My phone. I'll start after she grabs you."

"What if she doesn't?"

"Make her."

Claire covered her mouth.

Vanessa paused the recording.

Neither sister spoke for several seconds.

Then Claire whispered, "He wanted Rachel to attack me."

"He wanted a confrontation."

"With my children watching."

"So he could claim you started it."

Claire looked at the screen.

Derek's recorded face was calm.

Cold.

Planning.

She had spent weeks wondering whether she was overreacting.

Now she felt something unexpected.

Not fear.

Clarity.

Vanessa called Officer Ellis.

He listened.

His tone changed.

"This is different."

"What can you do?" Vanessa asked.

"Preserve that recording. Send the original file. Do not edit it."

Claire interrupted.

"What if they try tomorrow?"

"Do not go."

"If I don't, they'll change the plan."

"Good."

"No. They'll deny everything."

"They can deny the recording."

"They'll say it was hypothetical."

Ellis sighed.

"Mrs. Bennett, I'm not going to encourage you to enter a situation where someone discussed striking you."

Claire looked at Vanessa.

Her sister agreed.

Then the kitchen recording continued.

Rachel walked toward the refrigerator.

"Tomorrow afternoon?"

Derek nodded.

"The kids will be home from school."

Claire felt sick.

Rachel asked, "How do you get Claire there?"

Derek opened a drawer.

"Tell her Noah left his inhaler."

Claire froze.

Noah did have an inhaler.

Derek knew Claire would never ignore that.

Then Derek said something quieter.

"We don't need much. One good clip of Claire shoving you. Maybe screaming. I'll call the police. By the time Vanessa gets involved, the first report already says Claire was the aggressor."

Rachel stared at him.

"And after that?"

"Emergency custody."

"And the house?"

"She'll have bigger problems."

"And us?"

Derek smiled.

"Free."

Vanessa stopped the recording.

Claire stood.

"I'm going."

"No."

"They're expecting me."

"No."

"I know exactly what they're planning."

"Which is why you are not going."

Claire turned toward her sister.

"If I stay away, Derek still has a petition accusing me. He still has staged photos. He still has people willing to lie."

"We have this recording."

"He'll say Rachel was joking."

"It isn't a joke."

"Will a judge know that before he gives Derek temporary custody?"

Vanessa did not answer.

Claire continued.

"You told me once that evidence is strongest when it shows what people actually do."

"I also told you not to be brave."

"I'm not."

Claire's eyes were steady now.

"I'm protecting my children."

They argued for an hour.

Eventually a safer version of Claire's plan emerged.

Emily and Noah would not actually be present.

Derek could believe they were arriving later.

Claire would enter while Vanessa and the officers remained close enough to intervene immediately.

The original old phone would stay in the drawer.

Claire would keep her own phone recording.

Most importantly, Vanessa configured the hidden phone's emergency system to send an alert the moment a sustained high volume threshold was detected while recording.

Not perfect.

Not guaranteed.

But another layer.

At 4:46 the following afternoon, Derek texted.

Noah's inhaler is here.

Rachel wants to apologize.

Come at six.

Claire showed Vanessa.

Her sister looked at the message.

Then at Claire.

"This is the last chance to walk away."

Claire placed one hand over her pregnant belly.

"No."

At 5:58, Claire parked in front of her own house.

Through the kitchen window, Rachel was already there.

And beside her on the counter lay a large stainless steel soup ladle.
