Chapter 9 - The Man at Rachel’s House)

Police reached the Connecticut house before Claire did.

Peter Lang was gone.

Claire’s sister Rachel was found unconscious beside the garage.

She had been struck from behind but was alive.

Sophie was hiding inside a bathroom closet.

When Claire arrived, she ran past every officer and dropped to her knees as Sophie came through the hallway.

The little girl crashed into her arms.

"Mommy."

Claire held her so tightly Sophie complained she could not breathe.

Claire loosened her grip but refused to let go.

"Did he touch you?"

Sophie shook her head.

"He wanted my hair."

Claire stared.

"What?"

"He had scissors."

A detective nearby turned.

Sophie pointed toward the kitchen.

"He put some hair in a bag."

Claire closed her eyes.

DNA.

Peter Lang had come for a fresh sample.

"Did he say anything?"

Sophie thought.

"He asked if I had a brother."

Claire froze.

"What did you say?"

"I said no."

"Then what?"

"He said, Are you sure?"

Claire looked at the detective.

"Why would he ask her that?"

The detective had no answer.

Margaret arrived twenty minutes later with two attorneys.

Claire nearly attacked her.

"You brought him into our lives."

Margaret looked genuinely shaken.

"I did not send him."

"You hired him to find Rachel."

"Four years ago."

"He works for Caldwell Holdings."

"Under Daniel."

Claire turned.

Daniel had not come.

She called him.

No answer.

She called again.

Nothing.

Michael answered from the hospital.

"Daniel isn’t here."

"Where is he?"

"He left his phone in his office."

"Did he meet Lang?"

Michael hesitated.

"Several times."

Claire felt rage rising.

"What were they doing?"

"Daniel asked him to locate any other potential trust beneficiaries."

"So Daniel knew about Rachel’s child."

"I think he suspected."

Claire looked at Margaret.

"Your son sent an investigator after Sophie."

Margaret’s voice was firm.

"No."

"You don’t know that."

"I know Daniel."

Claire almost laughed.

"You thought you knew Thomas."

Margaret recoiled.

Claire hated herself for the cruelty.

She did not take it back.

The next morning, Rachel regained consciousness.

She remembered opening the garage door.

She remembered Lang asking whether Claire was inside.

Then nothing.

The security cameras had been disabled six minutes before his arrival.

A professional operation.

Police issued a warrant to question him.

Lang disappeared.

Daniel disappeared too.

Maya immediately filed for emergency temporary custody orders protecting Sophie.

Claire did not expect Daniel to contest them.

He did.

His attorney argued that Claire was using the birthday incident to alienate Sophie from her legal father.

Claire stared across the courtroom at the empty chair where Daniel should have been.

His attorney appeared by video.

The judge watched footage of Margaret shoving Sophie into the cake.

He read Daniel’s public accusation.

Then he looked at the attorney.

"Your client believes the child is not his but wants immediate unsupervised custody?"

The attorney shifted.

"Mr. Caldwell’s emotional statement at the party does not reflect his legal position."

The judge’s expression became colder.

"His legal position was established when he consented to assisted conception and signed the birth certificate."

Claire felt something unclench in her chest.

For five years Daniel had been Sophie’s father.

Now he was trying to use biology when convenient and parenthood when advantageous.

The court refused.

Temporary sole physical custody went to Claire.

Daniel was allowed supervised visitation if he appeared.

He did not.

That afternoon, Arthur received a message.

No sender name.

Only coordinates.

The location led to an abandoned storage facility outside White Plains.

Police went first.

They found Peter Lang’s car.

Blood on the steering wheel.

No Peter.

In the trunk was a metal case.

Inside were DNA kits.

Photographs of Sophie.

Photographs of Rachel Bell.

Photographs of several other children.

Claire stared at them.

"Who are they?"

Arthur picked up one.

A boy around six.

Another showed a girl around eight.

Another showed twin boys.

Every photograph had a handwritten code.

Maya contacted Michael.

He compared them against the clinic ledger.

His answer came an hour later.

The codes matched preserved specimens.

Not only Caldwell specimens.

Dozens of wealthy families had funded St. Vincent over the decades.

Someone had been tracking children created through altered fertility procedures.

Claire felt nauseated.

This was not one family’s inheritance scheme.

It was a system.

At the bottom of the metal case, police found a flash drive.

Most files were encrypted.

One opened immediately.

A video.

Peter Lang appeared on screen.

He was sitting in his car.

The timestamp showed it had been recorded the night before Sophie’s birthday.

Lang looked directly into the camera.

"If you’re seeing this, it means one of the Caldwells decided I know too much."

Claire glanced at Margaret.

Margaret stared at the screen.

Lang continued.

"I was hired four years ago to find Rachel Bell and the A19 child. I found them."

Arthur gripped the table.

"I was ordered not to approach."

Lang took a breath.

"The child in the photograph is not the A19 child."

Arthur looked confused.

Lang continued.

"Rachel Bell was protecting someone else’s son."

Claire felt her pulse quicken.

"The actual A19 descendant was removed from St. Vincent after birth."

Lang looked down.

"I spent four years following false identities."

Then he said something no one expected.

"The child is not six years old."

Claire frowned.

A19 had been transferred six years ago.

Lang lifted his eyes.

"Because the A19 embryo transferred to Rachel never resulted in a living birth."

Arthur whispered, "No."

Lang continued.

"The qualifying descendant exists. But he was born long before Rachel’s pregnancy."

Margaret stared.

"That’s impossible."

Lang’s recording continued.

"The clinic falsified the age of the sample."

Claire felt cold.

A19 was supposed to have been created in 1994.

What if it was not?

"The person you are looking for is an adult."

Lang leaned closer to the camera.

"And he has been inside Caldwell Holdings for years."

The video ended.

No name.

Claire looked around the room.

Arthur.

Margaret.

Michael.

Daniel.

Every possibility seemed worse than the last.

Then Claire remembered Michael’s mother.

Elena Voss.

She had worked at St. Vincent.

Claire called her.

"Elena, was A19 really created in 1994?"

Silence.

"Elena?"

Finally she answered.

"No."

Claire closed her eyes.

"When?"

"1978."

Claire calculated.

A child born from an embryo created in 1978 could now be close to fifty.

"Why was the date changed?"

"Because Harrison was not the father."

Claire stared at the phone.

"What?"

Elena’s voice trembled.

"A19 was not Harrison and Margaret’s embryo."

Claire looked toward Margaret.

Margaret’s face had turned white.

Claire whispered, "Then whose was it?"

Elena answered.

"Margaret’s."

Claire waited.

"And the father?"

May you like

Elena started crying.

"I think that is why Andrew Caldwell was killed."
