Chapter 7 - The Missing Daughter)

Rachel Bell vanished in November 2020.

Six years before Sophie’s birthday.

Arthur had told almost no one.

He had reported her missing.

Police investigated.

Her car was found at an airport parking garage.

Her passport had not been used.

Her bank accounts had remained untouched.

She had simply disappeared.

"How pregnant was she?" Claire asked.

"Twenty one weeks."

Maya leaned forward.

"And the pregnancy came from fertility treatment?"

Arthur nodded.

"Rachel had suffered three miscarriages. St. Vincent offered her an experimental transfer."

"Did she know whose embryo it was?"

"No. They told her it came from an anonymous donor program."

Claire thought of A19.

An embryo genetically linked to Harrison Caldwell.

"Who introduced Rachel to St. Vincent?"

Arthur did not answer.

Claire knew before he spoke.

"Margaret."

The room felt smaller.

Arthur covered his face.

"Rachel worked at the Caldwell Foundation. Margaret knew about her miscarriages. She told her about a doctor at St. Vincent."

"So Margaret placed your daughter in that program."

"Yes."

"Did Harrison know?"

"He was dead by then."

Claire paced.

Margaret had access to a preserved embryo created decades earlier.

She directed Arthur’s daughter to the clinic.

Rachel became pregnant.

Then disappeared.

Claire thought of the inheritance trust.

A biological descendant of Harrison would qualify.

If Rachel’s child survived, that child could have become the heir before Sophie.

"Was the baby ever found?"

"No."

"Could Rachel have given birth somewhere?"

"We never knew."

Claire looked at Maya.

"This may mean there’s another Caldwell heir."

Maya nodded.

"Potentially."

Arthur’s phone rang.

He answered immediately.

His face changed.

"What hospital?"

He listened.

"We’re coming."

He ended the call.

"Michael Voss was found unconscious in a parking structure."

Claire felt a wave of relief that he was alive.

"Was he attacked?"

"They don’t know."

At Bellevue Hospital, Michael’s mother Elena was already beside him.

Michael had a concussion and a fractured wrist, but doctors expected a full recovery.

Police waited outside.

He refused to speak to them until Claire arrived.

When she entered, he looked at Arthur.

"You told her?"

Arthur nodded.

Michael closed his eyes.

"Good."

Claire sat beside the bed.

"Who attacked you?"

"I didn’t see."

"What did they take?"

"My phone."

"The ledger?"

Michael almost smiled.

"No."

"Where is it?"

"Locker 218."

"You told me that."

"I wanted whoever was listening to think that too."

Claire frowned.

"There is no locker?"

"There is."

"What’s inside?"

"A copy."

"Where is the original?"

Michael looked at Elena.

She opened her handbag.

Inside was a black notebook sealed in plastic.

Claire stared.

Elena said, "Samuel Reed gave it to me before he died."

Michael nodded.

"My mother kept it for seven years."

Claire reached for it.

Elena pulled it back.

"Once you read this, you cannot pretend your daughter is outside this story."

"My daughter was never outside it."

Elena handed it over.

The ledger contained codes, dates and sample transfers.

C17 appeared repeatedly.

Frozen.

Restricted.

Audit flag.

Then six years ago:

C17. Unauthorized retrieval attempt. Failed.

A19. Released for transfer. R47.

Claire flipped forward.

Five years ago, around the time of her own treatment:

Donor profile 5531.

Approved.

Prepared.

Then crossed out.

Below it:

C17 secondary thaw authorization.

Claire stopped.

"No."

Elena leaned closer.

"What?"

Claire pointed.

Her conception date.

C17.

Thomas Caldwell.

Someone had thawed Thomas’s preserved specimen during Claire’s treatment cycle.

Daniel’s selected donor had been removed.

Her daughter had almost certainly been conceived using Thomas Caldwell’s genetic material.

Claire covered her mouth.

Even though she had suspected it, seeing it in writing felt like losing the ground beneath her.

She had consented to one donor.

Someone had chosen another.

Her body had been used inside a plan she never understood.

Her daughter had been created through deception.

Elena touched Claire’s arm.

"None of this changes who Sophie is."

Claire looked at her.

"I know."

And she did.

The fury had nothing to do with Sophie.

It belonged to the adults who had turned fertility treatment into an inheritance scheme.

Michael said, "Keep reading."

Claire continued.

Three months after Sophie’s conception, another notation appeared.

DNA viability confirmed.

Potential qualifying descendant.

Notification sent M.C.

Margaret Caldwell.

Claire felt sick.

"She knew before Sophie was born."

Michael nodded.

"Most likely."

Claire remembered Margaret in the hospital room five years earlier, holding newborn Sophie and crying.

She had thought those tears were joy.

Now she wondered if Margaret had been looking at a child or at control of a company.

"Then why reject her now?"

Michael answered.

"Because Margaret lost control of the plan."

"How?"

"Your name is in the trust."

Claire understood.

Margaret expected Sophie to preserve family control.

But Harrison’s trust gave Claire authority.

Claire, the outsider.

Claire, the woman Margaret had never accepted.

Michael continued.

"There’s something else."

Claire almost laughed.

"There always is."

He pointed to the next page.

One notation was circled in red.

A19 pregnancy ongoing.

Subject relocated under protection.

Claire looked at Arthur.

His face collapsed.

"Rachel."

Michael nodded.

"She didn’t disappear because someone took her."

Arthur stared.

"Then why?"

Michael looked at Elena.

Elena answered.

"Samuel Reed helped her disappear."

Arthur stood so quickly his chair fell.

"Why?"

"Because Rachel discovered what had been transferred into her."

"Where is she?"

"I don’t know."

"You knew she was alive?"

"Samuel told me only that she was safe."

Arthur’s voice broke.

"For six years?"

Elena began crying.

"He believed telling you would lead Margaret to her."

Arthur looked as if she had struck him.

Claire stepped between them.

"What happened to the baby?"

Elena shook her head.

"I don’t know."

Michael reached for the ledger.

"There’s one final entry."

Claire looked.

It was dated four years earlier.

One year after Sophie’s birth.

A19 descendant confirmed living.

Claire felt the room go silent.

Somewhere, another biological descendant of Harrison Caldwell was alive.

A child older than Sophie.

A child who might outrank her under the trust.

Arthur whispered, "My grandchild."

Then Michael said something that changed the question entirely.

"Maybe."

Claire looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Michael pointed to the words.

"It says descendant confirmed living."

"Yes."

"It does not say Rachel delivered the child."

Claire frowned.

Elena suddenly looked afraid.

Michael continued.

"The clinic transfer records show Rachel’s pregnancy."

He turned the page.

"But the birth record Samuel attached has another mother’s name."

Claire stared.

"Whose?"

Michael opened his mouth.

A voice came from the doorway.

"Mine."

May you like

Everyone turned.

Margaret Caldwell stood there.
