Chapter 5 - The Husband Claire Never Knew)

Daniel came to Claire’s apartment that evening.
She had moved into the Manhattan property she owned before their marriage.
He rang the bell eleven times.
Claire watched him through the security camera.
On the twelfth ring she answered through the speaker.
"Leave."
"We need to talk."
"No."
"Claire, I know you went to the bank."
She felt no surprise.
"Of course you do."
"My mother is panicking."
"Good."
"This isn’t a joke."
"Neither was Sophie crying into a birthday cake."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I’m sorry that happened."
Claire stared at the screen.
Not I’m sorry my mother did it.
I’m sorry that happened.
Passive language had protected the Caldwell family for generations.
She was beginning to recognize it everywhere.
"Go home, Daniel."
"I don’t have one."
"Yes, you do. It has thirty rooms."
"My mother told me to leave."
Claire almost smiled.
"Then yesterday was difficult for both of us."
Daniel looked directly at the camera.
"Michael Voss is missing."
Claire’s amusement vanished.
"What?"
"He didn’t come to work. His phone is off."
"When did you last see him?"
"After the party."
Claire remembered Elena’s fear.
"Where?"
"In my office."
"What did you talk about?"
Daniel hesitated.
Claire said, "Goodbye."
"Wait."
He looked over his shoulder.
Then stepped closer to the camera.
"He told me my mother had lied about the DNA report."
Claire unlocked the building door.
Five minutes later Daniel sat across from her kitchen table.
She did not offer him anything.
He looked exhausted.
"What did Michael say?"
"That Sophie is a Caldwell, but the report doesn’t prove what my mother claims."
"What does she claim?"
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
"That your treatment was manipulated."
"Was it?"
"I don’t know."
"Did you know about C17?"
Daniel stared.
The answer was yes.
"How long?"
"Three weeks."
Claire stood.
"You let me walk into that party knowing there was a possibility our daughter was conceived from stolen genetic material?"
"I was trying to understand it."
"You were trying to protect the company."
Daniel slammed his palm against the table.
"You think this is only about money?"
"Everything in your family eventually becomes about money."
"If Sophie is genetically linked to Thomas, the trust changes everything."
"For you."
"For everyone. Thousands of employees. Pension funds. Contracts. The company cannot be handed to a five year old."
"It isn’t handed to her. I become trustee."
Daniel looked at her.
There it was.
The real fear.
Claire sat down slowly.
"You’re afraid of me."
"I’m afraid of what happens if you control it."
"Why?"
Daniel laughed without humor.
"Because you hate my mother."
"Your mother pushed our daughter into a cake."
"Before yesterday."
Claire looked at him.
"Why are you afraid of me having control?"
Daniel did not answer.
Claire knew.
"Because I’ll look at the books."
His face changed.
Only slightly.
Enough.
"What did you do?"
"Nothing."
"Daniel."
"Nothing that concerns you."
Claire stood again.
"Get out."
"Claire, listen."
"No. You spent years telling me your company was complicated whenever I asked questions. You told me the trust was family business. You told me Michael handled the finances. Now you’re terrified that I might become trustee."
Daniel rose.
"Because the company has debts."
"How much?"
"Claire."
"How much?"
He looked toward the window.
"Two hundred million."
She stared.
Then Daniel added, "Maybe more."
"How much more?"
"We have exposure approaching six hundred million."
Claire felt dizzy.
Caldwell Holdings was believed to be worth nearly four billion dollars.
"How did no one know?"
"Because it’s structured through subsidiaries."
"Whose decision?"
Daniel said nothing.
"Yours?"
"My mother approved it."
"What was the money for?"
"Expansion."
"That’s a lie."
Daniel looked at her.
Claire had been married to him long enough to know when he lied.
He sat again.
"We were trying to buy back voting rights held by the foundation before the deadline."
Claire understood slowly.
"You borrowed hundreds of millions to keep control inside the family."
"If no biological heir exists, the foundation receives the controlling block."
"And you wanted to stop that."
"Yes."
"But now Sophie may be a biological heir."
Daniel’s eyes met hers.
"Which means the debt becomes unnecessary."
"Then why are you afraid?"
"Because some of the loans were personally guaranteed."
"By whom?"
"My mother."
Claire waited.
"And?"
Daniel looked away.
"And me."
The picture became clearer.
If the trust passed to Sophie under Claire’s trusteeship, Claire would have authority to investigate transactions.
She would discover the debt.
Possibly worse.
"Did you commit fraud?"
Daniel stood.
"No."
"Did Michael?"
Silence.
"Is that why he disappeared?"
"I don’t know."
Claire moved away from the table.
"You need to leave."
Daniel did not move.
"Michael told me something else."
She waited.
"He said my mother isn’t trying to prove Sophie is not a Caldwell."
Claire frowned.
"That’s exactly what she’s doing."
"No."
Daniel’s face had lost its arrogance.
For the first time since Claire had known him, he looked like a frightened boy.
"She’s trying to prove Sophie is the wrong Caldwell."
Claire thought of C17.
Thomas.
"What does that mean?"
"I asked him."
"And?"
"He said there were two preserved Caldwell samples at St. Vincent."
Claire felt the blood leave her face.
"Whose was the second?"
"Michael wouldn’t tell me."
Claire whispered, "Why?"
May you like
Daniel looked at her.
"Because he said if I knew whose it was, I would understand why my father died."
