Chapter 13 - The Truth About Sophie)

Peter Lang’s arrest changed everything.
Federal investigators opened cases involving St. Vincent Fertility Center, Caldwell Holdings and several shell companies.
Daniel cooperated.
Not out of courage.
Out of necessity.
His attorneys negotiated.
He admitted approving payments to Lang but denied knowing about violence or intimidation.
Margaret’s financial records showed she had also paid Lang for private investigations.
Neither could pretend he was merely a stranger anymore.
The birthday video became public.
So did the story of Sophie.
Claire hated that most.
Reporters waited outside her building.
Television programs debated whether a child conceived through improperly documented donor material could inherit a family fortune.
Commentators who had never met Sophie discussed her as though she were a legal puzzle.
Claire stopped watching.
At home, Sophie wanted only three things.
Pancakes.
Her stuffed rabbit.
And confirmation that her sixth birthday would not have a giant cake.
Claire promised.
"No giant cake."
"Can we have cupcakes?"
"Absolutely."
"Grandma can’t come."
Claire hesitated.
"No one comes unless you want them there."
Sophie nodded.
That was enough.
The deeper truth arrived two weeks later.
Elena asked Claire to meet privately.
They chose a quiet room in Maya’s office.
Elena placed a hospital bracelet on the table.
SOPHIE CALDWELL.
Date of birth.
Claire recognized it immediately.
She had kept the matching mother bracelet in a memory box.
"Where did you get that?"
"St. Vincent storage."
Claire stared.
"You said Lang told me to ask about the delivery room."
Elena nodded.
"I investigated."
"And?"
"The neonatal sample Mercer tested did belong to a baby born that night."
"But not Sophie."
"No."
Claire felt her heart beating harder.
"Was there another baby?"
"Yes."
Claire closed her eyes.
She remembered the delivery.
Exhaustion.
Medication.
Daniel crying.
A nurse carrying Sophie away briefly because of breathing concerns.
"Another girl?"
"A boy."
"Then how could the samples be switched?"
Elena opened a file.
"Two infant kits were mislabeled."
"Accidentally?"
"I don’t think so."
Claire’s voice became cold.
"Who was the other baby?"
Elena slid a birth record toward her.
Mother.
Rachel Bell.
Claire stared.
"No."
Elena nodded.
"Rachel gave birth the same night as you."
Claire could barely process the sentence.
"Rachel was supposed to have delivered a year earlier."
"That pregnancy ended."
Claire looked up.
"Stillbirth."
"Yes."
"So this was another pregnancy?"
Elena nodded.
"Natural, according to the file."
"Why was she still at St. Vincent?"
"Samuel Reed was helping her."
Claire reread the date.
Rachel Bell delivered a son twenty seven minutes before Sophie was born.
"What was his name?"
"No name listed."
"Where is he?"
"That is still unclear."
Claire thought of Arthur searching for his daughter.
"Does Arthur know?"
"Not yet."
"Why tell me first?"
Elena’s face became serious.
"Because the samples were not simply switched."
Claire waited.
Elena pointed at a genetic chart.
"The neonatal sample labeled Sophie matched Rachel’s son."
"Meaning Mercer thought Sophie wasn’t Thomas’s daughter because they tested the boy’s blood."
"Correct."
Claire exhaled.
That resolved one contradiction.
"What did the boy’s DNA show?"
Elena hesitated.
"He was related to Harrison Caldwell."
Claire stared.
"How?"
"We need more testing."
"Was Rachel involved with a Caldwell?"
"I don’t know."
Then Claire remembered Michael.
Harrison’s son.
Michael had been an adult six years ago.
He worked for Caldwell Holdings.
"Michael?"
Elena’s expression became horrified.
"No. Absolutely not."
"Then who?"
Elena looked down.
"Possibly Daniel."
Claire stood so quickly the chair moved backward.
"No."
"I said possibly."
"Daniel knew Rachel?"
"She worked at the foundation."
Claire remembered Daniel refusing to discuss certain years of their marriage.
Long trips.
Late nights.
She felt ill.
"Was Daniel fertile enough to father a child?"
Elena answered carefully.
"Infertile does not always mean sterile."
Claire had considered the same possibility.
"Did you test him?"
"Not yet."
"Do it."
"Claire."
"Do it."
Elena nodded.
Daniel agreed after his lawyer advised cooperation.
The results took three days.
Claire did not sleep the night before they arrived.
Maya called at seven fifteen in the morning.
"Daniel is not the father."
Claire closed her eyes.
Relief came before she could stop it.
"Then who is?"
"We have a partial answer."
Claire met Maya and Elena at the laboratory.
The boy’s neonatal DNA showed a close biological relationship to Harrison.
But not through Daniel.
Not through Michael.
The relationship suggested the boy’s father was another son of Harrison Caldwell.
Claire stared at the report.
"Harrison had another son?"
Elena whispered, "Or one of the sons we believed dead was not biologically what we thought."
Thomas was not Harrison’s biological son.
Andrew was.
Michael was.
Both excluded.
Claire thought of Margaret’s confession.
All the hidden pregnancies.
All the lies.
Then Maya handed her a sealed report.
"There is one more comparison."
"With whom?"
"Harrison’s older medical archive contained blood from Thomas."
Claire frowned.
"We know Thomas was Jonathan Mercer’s son."
"That’s what Margaret believed."
Claire opened the report.
She read the first line.
Then again.
Thomas Caldwell was biologically Harrison Caldwell’s son.
Claire stared at Elena.
"Margaret was wrong?"
"Or lied."
Claire felt dizzy.
If Thomas was Harrison’s biological son, then Sophie, conceived from Thomas’s preserved material, was a Caldwell descendant after all.
And possibly a Mercer claimant only if Jonathan was involved some other way.
Every family tree they had used was broken.
Claire whispered, "How many paternity lies can one family have?"
Maya answered quietly.
"Enough to build an empire."
The next report confirmed Sophie’s relationship.
Sophie was Thomas Caldwell’s biological daughter.
Thomas was Harrison Caldwell’s biological son.
Therefore Sophie qualified under Harrison’s trust.
The mystery that had started with a birthday cake finally had a clean legal answer.
Sophie was biologically a Caldwell.
But Claire no longer cared about proving it to Margaret.
She cared about what came next.
The trust transfer hearing was scheduled for Monday.
If the court accepted the evidence, Claire would become trustee for Sophie.
Daniel and Margaret would lose control of the company.
For the first time, Claire could see an ending.
Not a perfect one.
But an ending where Sophie was safe.
Then Arthur Bell called.
His voice shook.
"I found Rachel."
Claire stood.
"Where?"
May you like
Arthur began crying.
"She came home."
