Chapter 11 - Michael’s Blood)

Michael did not sit.

Claire stared at him.

"No."

"I said the same thing."

Michael placed his own DNA report beside Sophie’s.

The results were clear.

Michael Voss had a direct paternal relationship to Harrison Caldwell.

Most likely father and son.

Claire looked at him.

"Harrison was your father?"

Michael nodded.

"My mother confirmed it last night."

Claire turned toward Elena.

She stood outside the doorway.

Her face was wet with tears.

Claire suddenly understood why Elena had remained close to St. Vincent.

Why she protected the ledger.

Why Michael entered Caldwell Holdings.

"Did you know when you took the CFO job?"

Michael shook his head.

"I knew my mother had worked for the family. That was all."

Elena entered.

"Harrison and I had an affair in 1977."

Margaret’s suspicion had been correct.

Elena continued.

"I was nineteen. He was thirty nine."

Claire’s expression hardened.

Elena did not defend it.

"He paid for my education. Later he helped me enter embryology. When I became pregnant, he wanted me to end it."

Michael looked away.

Claire saw years of unresolved pain in the movement.

"I refused," Elena said. "He provided money but no name. Michael was raised as Voss."

"Did Harrison know Michael worked at Caldwell Holdings?"

"No. He died before Michael joined."

Claire looked at Michael.

"So you are the biological descendant named in the trust."

"Apparently."

"And you didn’t know."

"No."

Maya said, "Which creates a different problem."

Claire looked at her.

"The trust should transfer to Michael."

"Possibly."

"Why possibly?"

"Because the language refers to the first verified biological descendant in the generation following Harrison’s acknowledged children."

Claire frowned.

"Michael is Harrison’s son, not next generation."

"Exactly."

"So he doesn’t qualify."

"But his children would."

Claire looked at Michael.

"Do you have children?"

"No."

"Then why was Peter Lang tracking children?"

Michael shook his head.

"I don’t know."

Claire thought again.

"What if the adult heir Lang mentioned wasn’t Michael as an heir?"

Maya nodded.

"He may have meant Michael is the person whose future descendants activate the trust."

Claire sat back.

Then she remembered Daniel’s financial scheme.

If no qualifying descendant existed by the deadline, control went to the foundation.

If Michael had a child before the deadline, that child could change everything.

Claire stared at him.

"Does Daniel know who you are?"

Michael’s silence answered.

"How long?"

"About two months."

Claire felt anger rising.

"That’s why he promised you control."

Michael nodded.

"He told me he had discovered Harrison was my father. He said we could restructure the company together."

"You believed him?"

"I wanted to."

Claire softened slightly.

Of course he did.

A man who had never known his father suddenly discovered he belonged to one of America’s most powerful families.

Daniel had used that hunger.

"What did Daniel want from you?"

"Access to the debt structure."

"He already had that."

"Not all of it."

Michael looked toward Maya.

"I had refused to approve transfers to three offshore companies."

Claire’s stomach tightened.

"Whose companies?"

"That’s what I was investigating."

"Did you find out?"

"One belongs to Peter Lang."

Claire looked up.

"The investigator?"

"Yes."

"How much?"

"Forty two million dollars over six years."

"For what?"

"Consulting."

Claire almost laughed.

"Meaning?"

"Silence. Surveillance. Retrieval of documents. Maybe more."

Maya asked whether Daniel authorized the payments.

Michael nodded.

"Some. Others were signed by Margaret."

Claire closed her eyes.

Margaret had spent decades hiding biological records.

Daniel had spent years hiding financial ones.

Like mother, like son.

"Where is Daniel?"

Michael looked uneasy.

"I think Lang has him."

Claire stared.

"What?"

"The last transaction Daniel attempted was a transfer of ten million dollars to Lang."

"Attempted?"

"I froze it."

"When?"

"The morning after the birthday party."

"Then Lang attacked you."

"Probably."

Claire thought of Daniel disappearing.

"What does Lang want?"

Michael answered.

"Money."

"That simple?"

"No."

He removed another folder.

"Lang was not only working for the Caldwells. He was selling information to Mercer Capital."

Claire felt the story loop back.

Jonathan Mercer.

Thomas’s biological father.

Sophie’s biological grandfather.

"Why would the Mercers care about Sophie?"

Michael placed a document on the desk.

"Because Thomas Caldwell was legally Harrison’s son but biologically Jonathan Mercer’s."

Claire understood slowly.

"If Thomas had descendants..."

"They may have claims involving an old Mercer family trust."

Maya read the document.

Her eyes widened.

"How large?"

Michael answered.

"Potentially more valuable than Caldwell Holdings."

Claire stared.

She had spent days hoping Sophie would not inherit a corporate war.

Now another company had appeared.

"Does Sophie qualify?"

Michael looked at her.

"Her DNA says she is Thomas’s biological daughter."

Claire closed her eyes.

There it was.

The truth she had been chasing.

Sophie was not a Caldwell biological heir.

She was something else.

A Mercer heir.

And somebody had known.

Peter Lang had taken her hair to prove it.

Claire’s phone vibrated.

A video message.

Unknown sender.

She opened it.

Daniel appeared on screen.

His hands were tied behind a chair.

His face was bruised.

Peter Lang stood behind him.

Claire’s breath caught.

Lang looked into the camera.

"Mrs. Caldwell, your husband owes me ten million dollars."

Daniel shouted, "Don’t give him anything."

Lang struck the back of Daniel’s chair, making him flinch.

No serious injury.

A warning.

Lang continued.

"But money is no longer the most valuable thing your family possesses."

He smiled.

"The Mercer people confirmed the girl."

Claire felt ice in her veins.

Lang leaned toward the camera.

"Bring me the original St. Vincent ledger."

Maya shook her head immediately.

Lang continued.

"And bring Sophie’s DNA report."

Claire held the phone tighter.

"You have twelve hours."

The video ended.

Michael said, "You cannot go."

Claire looked at Daniel’s frozen image.

The man who had humiliated their daughter.

The man who had lied to her.

The man who might have participated in fraud.

But also the man Sophie still called Daddy.

Claire said quietly, "I’m not going to save Daniel for Daniel."

May you like

She looked toward the hallway, where Sophie sat with Rachel coloring under police protection.

"I’m going because my daughter has already lost enough."
