Chapter 4 - The Woman From the Clinic)

Dr. Elena Voss did not wait for Claire to find her.
At eleven twenty that morning, she walked into the lobby of Claire’s attorney’s office and asked for five minutes.
Claire refused.
Elena waited.
At noon, she was still there.
At twelve thirty, Claire finally agreed.
Her attorney, Maya Chen, remained in the room.
Arthur sat beside Claire.
Elena Voss looked nothing like the villain Claire had imagined.
She was sixty two, small, tired, and visibly terrified.
"I did not come to hurt Sophie."
Claire’s voice was cold.
"You went to my sister’s house."
"Because I believed Sophie was there."
"That is not reassuring."
Elena lowered her eyes.
"You’re right."
Maya placed a recorder on the table.
"This conversation is being documented."
Elena nodded.
"I expected that."
Claire pushed a photocopy of the C17 report toward her.
"What is this?"
Elena looked at it for only a second.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Where did you get that?"
"Answer the question."
Elena sat back.
"C17 was a cryopreserved specimen."
"From whom?"
"I cannot tell you."
Maya said, "Doctor, patient confidentiality does not permit you to conceal evidence of medical fraud."
Elena looked at her.
"There are situations where the person involved is not legally considered a patient."
Claire felt impatient.
"Was C17 used to conceive my daughter?"
Elena closed her eyes.
"I don’t know."
"You were the embryologist."
"I left St. Vincent before your treatment."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because I saw your daughter yesterday."
Claire stared.
"At the party?"
"Online."
The video had already spread.
Elena continued.
"When I saw her face, I recognized something."
Claire’s skin prickled.
"What?"
Elena looked toward Arthur.
He seemed to understand before Claire did.
"No," Arthur whispered.
Elena nodded.
Arthur stood suddenly and walked toward the window.
Claire looked between them.
"What am I missing?"
Arthur turned around.
"Harrison had a son before Daniel’s father was born."
Claire froze.
"What?"
"His name was Thomas."
Claire tried to remember Caldwell family photographs.
She knew Daniel’s father, Andrew, had died when Daniel was fourteen.
No one had ever mentioned another son.
Arthur continued.
"Thomas Caldwell was Harrison and Margaret’s first child."
"What happened to him?"
"He died."
"When?"
"At seventeen."
Claire looked at Elena.
"And C17 belonged to him?"
Elena did not answer.
Claire understood.
"My daughter was conceived using genetic material from a teenager who died decades ago?"
"No," Elena said quickly. "I did not say that."
"You didn’t have to."
Elena leaned forward.
"C17 was preserved for medical research under a protocol that would be illegal today."
Claire’s stomach turned.
"Explain."
"In the early nineties, before current tissue regulations, St. Vincent ran a fertility preservation research program. Some samples were retained with ambiguous consent."
"Thomas was seventeen."
"Yes."
"Did he consent?"
Elena’s silence was unbearable.
Arthur spoke.
"Harrison discovered the sample years later."
Claire turned toward him.
"He knew?"
"That is why he confronted Margaret."
Elena nodded.
"Margaret wanted the sample preserved indefinitely."
"Why?"
Arthur answered.
"Because she never recovered from Thomas’s death."
The room went quiet.
Claire looked again at the genetic report.
"If C17 was Thomas, then Sophie would be Daniel’s aunt."
Maya blinked.
"Biologically, yes."
Claire almost laughed from the absurdity.
Then another thought came.
"Daniel said the donor number in our treatment records was changed."
Elena went pale.
Claire stood.
"Someone used C17."
Elena shook her head.
"I don’t know that."
"You recognized Sophie from a video."
"I recognized features."
"What features?"
Elena looked at Arthur.
Arthur returned to the table.
He removed his phone and searched through photographs.
Finally he turned the screen toward Claire.
A black and white photograph showed a teenage boy.
Dark hair.
Serious eyes.
A narrow smile.
Claire stared.
The resemblance was not overwhelming.
But it was there.
Sophie’s eyes.
Sophie’s chin.
The tiny indentation above her left eyebrow.
Claire whispered, "That’s Thomas?"
Arthur nodded.
Elena wiped her eyes.
"When Harrison discovered Margaret had preserved the sample, he ordered it permanently restricted. Dr. Reed agreed."
"Then how could anyone use it?"
Elena looked at Claire.
"Someone changed the access designation after Harrison died."
"Who had authority?"
"Dr. Reed."
"But he opposed Margaret."
"Yes."
"Then why would he do it?"
Elena’s hands began shaking.
"He didn’t."
Claire stared.
"What are you saying?"
"The authorization carried his digital credentials. But Samuel told me personally he had never approved it."
"Did he report the breach?"
"He planned to."
"When?"
Elena looked down.
"The week he died."
No one spoke.
Claire felt the story shifting beneath her again.
This was bigger than a family argument.
Someone had accessed preserved genetic material.
Someone had altered medical records.
A doctor had died before exposing it.
And years later, Sophie had been conceived at the same clinic.
Maya leaned forward.
"Dr. Voss, do you have evidence?"
Elena nodded slowly.
"Not with me."
"Where?"
"I hid a copy of the internal audit."
Arthur asked, "Why didn’t you release it?"
Elena’s face tightened.
"Because someone broke into my home."
Claire felt cold.
"When?"
"Two nights after Samuel died."
"Did they take anything?"
"No."
"How do you know they were connected?"
Elena looked directly at Claire.
"They left Thomas Caldwell’s photograph on my pillow."
Claire thought of Margaret.
"Are you saying Margaret threatened you?"
"I’m saying someone wanted me to understand what the break in was about."
Maya asked where the audit was hidden.
Elena hesitated.
"I will give it to you under one condition."
Claire nearly snapped.
"What condition?"
"You protect my son."
Claire stared.
"Your son?"
"He works for Caldwell Holdings."
Arthur’s expression changed.
"Who?"
Elena swallowed.
"Michael Voss."
Arthur looked at Claire.
"Daniel’s chief financial officer."
Claire knew Michael.
He attended Christmas dinners.
He traveled with Daniel.
He had been at Sophie’s birthday party.
Standing near the cake.
Watching.
Claire suddenly remembered something from the video.
Immediately after Margaret shoved Sophie into the cake, Michael had not looked at Sophie.
He had looked at Daniel.
As if waiting to see what Daniel would do.
Claire asked Elena, "Does Michael know?"
"About C17?"
"About any of this."
Elena’s voice became barely audible.
"He knows enough."
"Then why hasn’t he helped you?"
Elena looked toward the door.
"Because he believes Daniel is going to give him control of Caldwell Holdings."
Arthur shook his head.
"Daniel can’t."
Elena looked at him.
"I know."
Claire suddenly understood.
"Michael doesn’t."
Elena nodded.
Maya leaned back.
"So Daniel is promising him something he cannot legally deliver."
"Yes."
"Why?"
May you like
Elena answered with one sentence.
"Because Daniel is planning to make sure Sophie never qualifies for the trust."
