Chapter 8 - The Brother Who Came Back)

Tessa did not open the door.
Grant told her not to.
Daniel called hotel security while Grant kept Tessa on the line.
Within ninety seconds armed security officers were outside the suite.
The hallway was empty.
No Julian.
No visitor.
Only an envelope lying on the carpet.
Hotel cameras showed a man wearing a baseball cap walking toward the suite.
He never showed his face.
After knocking, he entered a stairwell.
The camera inside the stairwell had been disabled.
Grant left Mercer Capital immediately.
Richard attempted to follow.
Daniel stopped him.
"You're staying."
Richard stared at Grant.
"You don't understand what you're doing."
Grant turned.
"Then start explaining."
Richard looked at the surrounding employees.
"Not here."
Grant walked away.
By the time he reached the hotel, Noah had stopped crying.
Tessa was sitting on the floor beside his travel crib.
The sealed package remained outside the room under guard.
Grant entered.
Noah immediately reached for him.
Grant picked him up.
For several moments he allowed himself nothing except the feeling of his son's weight.
Alive.
Safe.
Still here.
Then he looked at Tessa.
"You okay?"
She nodded.
"You?"
"No."
"Good."
Grant raised an eyebrow.
She almost smiled.
"At least you're not pretending."
Daniel arrived twenty minutes later with a detective.
The package was photographed and examined before anyone opened it.
Inside was a small digital recorder.
A photograph.
And a key.
Grant picked up the photograph with gloved hands.
Evelyn stood beside a man near a lake.
The image had been taken from far away.
Grant recognized her immediately.
He recognized the man too.
Julian.
The timestamp was four days before Evelyn's death.
Grant sat down.
His brother had been alive.
Evelyn knew.
And she never told him.
Tessa sat beside him.
Grant did not look at her.
"She lied to me."
"Maybe she was protecting you."
"Everyone keeps protecting me by lying."
Tessa had no answer.
Daniel examined the key.
"Bank deposit box."
A number was engraved into the metal.
The digital recorder contained one audio file.
Grant pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Evelyn's voice.
Grant stopped breathing.
It had been fifteen months since he heard her.
"Grant, if you're hearing this, something went wrong."
He closed his eyes.
Evelyn continued.
"I need you to understand that Julian did not steal from your father."
Grant's hand tightened around the recorder.
"He discovered that Mercer charitable accounts were being used to move money through shell companies. Your father believed Julian was involved. He wasn't."
Grant looked at Daniel.
The recording continued.
"Julian came to me because he didn't trust anyone inside Mercer Capital. I didn't believe him at first."
A pause.
Then Evelyn's breathing.
"We found records connecting the transfers to Richard Vale."
Grant stared at the wall.
Tessa whispered, "Richard."
Evelyn continued.
"But Richard isn't the one I'm afraid of."
The room became completely silent.
"There is someone else."
Static interrupted.
Then her voice returned.
"Someone who knew about Noah before we announced the pregnancy."
Grant's blood went cold.
"Someone who knew the exact structure of the Mercer trust before I finalized it."
Another interruption.
"If anything happens to me, do not assume the danger ends with Richard."
Then Evelyn spoke more softly.
"And Grant, do not hate Julian until you hear him."
The recording ended.
Grant sat motionless.
Daniel replayed the final thirty seconds.
Nothing else.
Grant looked at the key.
"Find the bank."
Daniel took a photograph and ran the number through private banking contacts.
It took an hour.
The key belonged to a deposit facility in Albany.
Grant stood.
"We're going."
Tessa looked at Noah.
"Not with him."
Grant agreed.
Daniel arranged a secure safe house for Noah and Tessa.
Before Grant left, Tessa stopped him.
"There's something you should know."
"What?"
"When the man outside said he was Julian, Noah reacted."
Grant frowned.
"How?"
"He stopped crying."
"So?"
"He turned toward the door."
Grant did not understand.
Tessa continued.
"Like he recognized the voice."
Grant stared.
"That's impossible."
"I know."
"Julian has never met Noah."
Tessa looked unsettled.
"Then someone with that voice has."
Grant remembered the midnight visits.
The open nursery door.
The disabled cameras.
Someone entering Noah's room.
His pulse accelerated.
He grabbed Daniel.
"We need the nursery recordings."
"We already checked. Deleted."
"Not the security system. The portable monitor archive."
Daniel understood.
They drove back to Mercer House before heading to Albany.
The nursery monitor stored motion clips locally for thirty days.
Most were ordinary.
Noah sleeping.
Tessa checking blankets.
Grant carrying him.
Vivienne entering during the day.
Then Daniel found a clip timestamped 2:13 a.m., nineteen days earlier.
The image was dark.
Someone stood beside Noah's crib.
A man.
Tall.
He leaned over.
Noah woke.
Instead of crying, he reached upward.
The man lifted him.
Grant's entire body went rigid.
The stranger held Noah gently for nearly two minutes.
Then placed him back into the crib.
Before leaving, he leaned close to the child.
The audio was faint.
Daniel increased the volume.
A whisper emerged.
"I'm sorry, little man."
The stranger moved toward the door.
For one second moonlight crossed his face.
Grant stepped toward the screen.
His brother had aged.
His hair was darker than Grant remembered.
Lines marked his face.
But there was no doubt.
Julian Mercer had been standing inside Noah's nursery.
Grant stared at the frozen image.
Tessa whispered, "Why would he come here and not speak to you?"
Grant did not answer.
Because he knew Julian.
Or at least he once had.
If Julian had risked entering Mercer House just to hold Noah, there was a reason.
Daniel looked at the timestamp.
"Nineteen days ago."
Grant's expression changed.
The first suspicious security failure had happened twenty days ago.
The plan against him accelerated after Julian entered the house.
Someone had seen him.
Someone knew he had returned.
Grant suddenly understood.
The attack on Noah might not have been part of the original plan.
It might have been panic.
Grant reached for the bank key.
"Albany."
Three hours later they stood inside a private vault room.
The deposit box contained no money.
No jewelry.
No legal documents.
Only a stack of photographs and a sealed envelope.
Grant opened the envelope.
One sentence was written inside in Evelyn's handwriting.
THE PERSON WHO BETRAYED JULIAN WAS THERE THE DAY NOAH WAS BORN.
Below the sentence were six names.
Grant read them.
Richard Vale.
Daniel Ruiz.
Dr. Marcus Harlan.
Evelyn's sister Caroline.
Grant himself.
May you like
And the final name.
Tessa Monroe.
