Chapter 12 - Seven Missing Minutes)

Grant wanted to dismiss it.

He wanted one piece of the story to be ridiculous enough to break the chain.

Noah was his son.

He had Grant's eyes.

Evelyn's smile.

The same stubborn expression Grant's father wore in every childhood photograph.

But doubt had already entered the room.

That was what conspiracies did best.

They did not need to replace truth.

They only needed to poison certainty.

Grant looked at Harlan.

"Who performed the DNA test?"

The doctor's silence answered.

"The Ralston laboratory."

Tessa sat down.

The same laboratory under investigation for unauthorized genetic testing.

The same family Tessa had worked for.

Grant asked, "Who ordered the test?"

"Evelyn."

"Who received the result?"

"Me."

"Did you see the raw data?"

"No."

"So the paper could have said anything."

"Yes."

Grant walked toward Noah.

The baby was playing with the zipper on a small blue blanket.

Completely unaware that five adults were questioning the foundation of his identity.

Grant knelt.

Noah looked up.

Then smiled.

The expression shattered something inside Grant.

He picked him up.

"I don't care."

Tessa watched him.

Grant held Noah close.

"I don't care what any test says. He's my son."

No one argued.

That decision gave Grant unexpected clarity.

The conspiracy wanted uncertainty.

He would not give them that weapon.

He turned to Daniel.

"Get an independent DNA test."

Daniel nodded.

"Use three laboratories."

"Already thinking the same thing."

"And no names."

"Agreed."

Tessa looked relieved.

Grant asked Harlan, "What happened during the seven missing minutes?"

"I don't know."

"You were there."

"I was called after the alarm."

"Who had access?"

"Hospital staff. Evelyn. You. Caroline was in the family waiting area."

"Richard?"

"Visited later."

"Julian?"

"We didn't know he was there."

Grant looked at the photograph again.

Julian held a bracelet.

Perhaps he had discovered the switch.

Perhaps he caused it.

Perhaps he stopped it.

Every answer opened another possibility.

Daniel's phone rang.

He moved away.

Tessa approached Grant.

"If Noah had been switched, Evelyn would know."

"She suspected something."

"Then why take him home?"

Grant looked at her.

"Because she believed he was her son."

Tessa nodded slowly.

"Exactly."

It was the obvious answer.

Whatever Evelyn suspected, she still believed Noah belonged to them.

That was enough for Grant.

Daniel returned.

"We found Vivienne."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

Grant's shoulders relaxed slightly.

"Where?"

"County hospital."

"What happened?"

"She walked into a police station twenty minutes ago covered in mud and asked for protection."

Harlan went pale.

Grant noticed.

"Protection from who?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Caroline Shaw."

Grant left Noah with Tessa under guard and drove directly to the hospital.

Vivienne sat in a secure examination room with a police detective.

Her wine red dress was gone.

She wore hospital clothing.

A bruise marked one wrist.

When Grant entered, she looked at him and laughed weakly.

"I told you this was bigger than me."

Grant remained standing.

"Where is Caroline?"

"I don't know."

"Julian?"

"I don't know."

"Richard is dead."

Vivienne closed her eyes.

"I know."

Grant studied her.

"Did Caroline kill him?"

"I didn't see."

"What happened to you?"

Vivienne looked at the detective.

The officer nodded for her to continue.

"After I left your house, Caroline called."

Grant waited.

"She told me to drive to a parking garage."

"Why?"

"She said we needed to leave."

"We?"

"Me and her."

"Where?"

"Canada first. Then Europe."

"Why?"

"Because you found the trust."

Grant's jaw tightened.

Vivienne continued.

"I knew it was over."

"When did you decide that?"

"When you looked at Noah."

Grant said nothing.

"For months Caroline told me you didn't really care about him. She said you cared about control."

Grant's expression hardened.

Vivienne looked ashamed.

"I believed what I wanted to believe."

"You kicked a baby."

Tears formed in her eyes.

"I'm not asking forgiveness."

"Good."

"I lost control."

"Stop saying that like your control disappeared. You chose every movement."

Vivienne lowered her eyes.

Grant continued.

"Why did Caroline want Noah?"

"The archive."

"Where is it?"

"I don't know."

"How do you access it?"

"She never told me."

"Why marry me?"

Vivienne laughed bitterly.

"Because Caroline couldn't get close to you."

"So she found someone who could."

"Yes."

"How?"

"She studied you."

Grant felt disgust.

"Studied?"

"Your routines. Relationships. Preferences. Previous girlfriends. Charity events."

Grant realized even their meeting had been engineered.

"How long?"

"Almost a year."

"Before we met?"

"Yes."

Grant thought of Tessa arriving two months earlier.

The timeline converged.

"Did Caroline arrange Brightwell?"

"I don't know."

"Did she send someone into Noah's nursery?"

Vivienne's face changed.

"No."

"You hesitated."

"Because I saw him."

"Who?"

"Julian."

Grant stepped closer.

"When?"

"Three weeks ago."

"Where?"

"Your house."

"Did Caroline know?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"I told her."

There it was.

Julian's appearance triggered the acceleration.

"What did she say?"

Vivienne swallowed.

"She said we were out of time."

Grant felt the pieces lock together.

The forged trust revised.

The medical incapacity filing.

The planned international trip.

They rushed because Julian had returned.

Grant asked, "Why was Caroline afraid of Julian?"

"Because he knows where the archive is."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Why did she attack you?"

Vivienne looked at her bruised wrist.

"Because I told her I was done."

Grant almost laughed.

"After assaulting Noah."

"Yes."

"Convenient."

"I know."

Vivienne looked at him.

"I was going to give you everything."

"Why?"

"Because when you came through that door, I realized Caroline had lied about one thing."

"What?"

"You."

Grant waited.

"She said if you discovered the plan, you'd care about the company first."

Vivienne's eyes dropped.

"You never even looked at the documents until Noah was safe."

Grant felt no satisfaction.

"What happened in the garage?"

"Caroline took my phone. She said Richard had failed."

"Was Julian there?"

Vivienne nodded.

Grant leaned forward.

"Working with her?"

"No."

"Then why?"

"He was following us."

Grant's heart accelerated.

"Did Caroline see him?"

"Eventually."

"What happened?"

"Richard arrived."

Vivienne's voice shook.

"They started arguing."

"About what?"

"I couldn't hear everything."

"What did you hear?"

Vivienne looked directly at Grant.

"Richard told Caroline that Evelyn had survived the first crash."

Grant stopped breathing.

The room went silent.

Vivienne continued.

"Caroline told him to shut up."

Grant's voice barely worked.

"What first crash?"

"I don't know."

"Evelyn died at the crash scene."

Vivienne shook her head.

"That's what I thought."

Grant's heartbeat became deafening.

"What exactly did Richard say?"

Vivienne repeated it.

"He said, You promised me she was already dead when you moved her."

Grant stared.

The official report had never mentioned Evelyn being moved.

The ambulance record said she died before extraction.

Vivienne continued.

"Then Julian appeared."

"What did he do?"

"He attacked Richard."

"Why?"

"Because of Evelyn."

Grant gripped the chair.

"What did Julian say?"

Vivienne closed her eyes, remembering.

Then she gave him the sentence.

"You didn't kill my brother's wife. You delivered her."

Grant felt as though the floor vanished beneath him.

"Delivered her where?"

Vivienne opened her eyes.

"That's when Caroline hit me."

She had no answer.

But someone did.

Julian.

And for the first time since Evelyn's funeral, Grant allowed himself to consider an impossible thought.

What if he had buried the wrong story?

What if Evelyn's death had not happened where everyone said it had?
