Chapter 13 - The Grave That Lied)

Grant went to Evelyn's grave at dawn.

He did not know why.

There was nothing there except stone, earth and a body he had been told belonged to his wife.

He stood beneath an oak tree while cold morning rain darkened his coat.

Evelyn Margaret Mercer.

Beloved wife.

Devoted mother.

The words felt almost insulting now.

A life reduced to three lines while everyone around her protected secrets.

Grant remembered the funeral.

Closed casket.

The medical examiner had advised against viewing because of injuries from the crash.

Grant had accepted it.

Caroline had insisted.

He remembered her holding his arm.

Don't do that to yourself.

Remember Evelyn as she was.

At the time it sounded compassionate.

Now it sounded strategic.

Daniel arrived beside him.

"The DNA samples are processing."

Grant nodded.

"Noah?"

"Safe."

"Tessa?"

"With him."

Grant stared at the grave.

"I want an exhumation."

Daniel did not react.

"I expected that."

"How quickly?"

"With a court order, maybe today if law enforcement supports it."

"Make it happen."

Daniel hesitated.

Grant looked at him.

"What?"

"There's something you should see first."

He handed Grant a tablet.

A hospital transport record.

The night Evelyn died, an ambulance collected a female crash victim matching her description.

But the destination had not been the hospital listed in the official report.

The ambulance initially transmitted a route to St. Mary's Medical Center.

Seven minutes later the destination changed.

Private clinic.

Grant read the name.

Northstar Medical Pavilion.

The same network name used by the fake executive health company.

"Northstar existed back then."

Daniel nodded.

"Different legal entity. Closed thirteen months ago."

"Who owned it?"

"Shell company."

"Behind that?"

Daniel gave him another page.

Ralston Biomedical Holdings.

Grant stared.

Everything kept returning to the Ralstons.

Tessa's previous employers.

The DNA laboratory.

Northstar.

The false move to Europe.

Grant asked, "Where are Peter and Amanda Ralston now?"

"Missing."

Grant turned sharply.

"Since when?"

"Last night."

Their house was empty.

Phones off.

Vehicles gone.

Someone was cleaning the board.

Grant looked at Evelyn's grave.

"Get the order."

By afternoon, law enforcement had enough suspicion to proceed.

Grant watched from a distance as professionals opened the burial site.

He expected to feel guilt.

Instead, he felt only terror.

The coffin emerged.

The cemetery officials moved it to a private facility.

Grant waited with Daniel.

Tessa arrived later.

She had left Noah with a trusted pediatric nurse under security.

Grant saw her and frowned.

"You shouldn't be here."

"Neither should you."

He almost smiled.

Hours passed.

Then a forensic pathologist entered.

Grant stood.

The doctor's expression revealed nothing.

"Mr. Mercer."

"Is it Evelyn?"

"We'll need DNA confirmation."

Grant's chest tightened.

"But?"

The doctor paused.

"The remains are female. Approximate age is consistent."

Grant waited.

"However, there is an immediate inconsistency."

"What?"

"The dental structure does not match the dental records provided for Evelyn Mercer."

Grant stared.

Tessa covered her mouth.

Daniel looked down.

Grant's knees nearly failed.

"You're saying that's not my wife."

"We need testing before making a final identification."

Grant turned toward the window.

Fifteen months.

He had visited that grave on Noah's first birthday.

Christmas morning.

Their anniversary.

He had spoken to a stranger beneath the ground.

Tessa moved beside him.

Grant could not look at her.

"If Evelyn isn't there..."

Tessa finished quietly.

"She may have survived."

Hope was dangerous.

Grant knew that.

He forced himself not to embrace it.

"Or she died somewhere else."

Tessa nodded.

But hope had already entered the room.

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then turned toward Grant.

"We have DNA results."

Grant's breath stopped.

"Noah?"

Daniel nodded.

Three laboratories.

Blind samples.

Independent processing.

Grant waited.

Daniel looked at him.

"All three confirm parent child relationship."

Grant closed his eyes.

Relief hit with such force that he had to sit.

Noah was his biological son.

Whatever happened in those seven missing minutes, he had come home with the right child.

Tessa crouched beside him.

Grant laughed once, unexpectedly.

Then his eyes filled.

For the first time since the living room door opened, he allowed himself one moment of happiness.

It lasted less than a minute.

Daniel received another call.

His face changed.

"What?"

Daniel lowered the phone.

"The woman in Evelyn's grave has been identified through missing person records."

Grant stood.

"Who?"

"A nurse from St. Catherine's."

Tessa went pale.

"What nurse?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Marianne Cole."

Tessa stared.

The dead Brightwell employee.

The woman whose identity had been used to recruit her.

Grant felt the conspiracy fold in on itself.

Marianne Cole disappeared the same week Evelyn's crash occurred.

Someone killed her.

Placed her body in Evelyn's coffin.

Then used her identity months later.

Grant asked, "Why her?"

Daniel shook his head.

"We don't know."

Tessa looked suddenly distant.

Grant noticed.

"What?"

She did not answer.

"Tessa."

"I remember her."

"From Noah's birth?"

Tessa nodded.

"Marianne worked the maternity floor."

Grant's skin chilled.

"The seven missing minutes."

Tessa whispered, "She was the nurse who found the bracelet in Noah's bassinet."

Silence.

Marianne had known something.

She disappeared.

Her body was buried as Evelyn.

Her identity was then used to place Tessa inside Mercer House.

Grant looked at the grave through the window.

Not random.

A message.

Someone had been arranging people like pieces on a board for over a year.

Daniel's phone vibrated.

Unknown encrypted message.

He opened it.

A photograph loaded.

Evelyn.

Alive.

Standing in what appeared to be a room with concrete walls.

The image had no date.

Grant grabbed the phone.

Below the photograph was a message.

STOP DIGGING OR THE NEXT GRAVE WILL HAVE THE RIGHT WOMAN IN IT.

Grant stared at Evelyn's face.

Tessa whispered, "She's alive."

Grant's hands trembled.

Maybe.

Or maybe the photograph was old.

But one detail suggested otherwise.

Evelyn held a newspaper.

May you like

The front page date was visible.

Yesterday.
