Chapter 10 - Evelyn's Sister)

Caroline Shaw disappeared before Grant reached the safe house.
Dr. Harlan did not.
Security detained him in the parking area.
Grant arrived furious.
Harlan stood beside a black sedan with both hands visible.
He looked twenty years older than he had the previous evening.
Grant walked directly toward him.
"You lied to me."
Harlan nodded.
Grant expected denial.
The confession stopped him.
"How long?"
"Years."
"About Evelyn?"
"Yes."
"About Julian?"
"Yes."
"About Noah?"
Harlan closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Grant stepped closer.
"Why did you come here?"
"To warn you."
"After helping Caroline find the house?"
"She already knew."
Grant looked at Daniel.
Daniel's expression remained unreadable.
Harlan said, "She knows every safe property the Mercer family owns."
"How?"
"Because half of them were purchased through Evelyn's legal structures."
Grant remembered.
Evelyn had handled estate planning before her pregnancy.
Harlan continued.
"Caroline has access to things you don't know exist."
"Where is she?"
"I don't know."
"Where is Julian?"
"I don't know."
Grant grabbed the doctor's coat.
Daniel stepped closer but did not intervene.
Harlan looked directly into Grant's eyes.
"If you hit me, you lose five minutes. If you listen, you might save your son."
Grant released him.
"Talk."
Harlan breathed.
"Caroline believes Noah is the key to dismantling Halcyon."
"He's a baby."
"He's an heir."
"To Mercer Capital."
"To more than Mercer Capital."
Grant frowned.
Harlan glanced around the parking structure.
"Not here."
They moved inside.
Tessa remained with Noah in a secured bedroom while Grant, Daniel and Harlan sat in the suite's dining area.
Harlan explained.
Thirty five years earlier Grant's father, Thomas Mercer, managed financial assets for several secretive families.
Not criminal in the simple sense.
Some businesses were legitimate.
Some were not.
They created Halcyon as a private alliance to protect wealth across generations.
Thomas eventually broke away.
He took records with him.
Those records became insurance.
Halcyon could not destroy Thomas without risking exposure.
Instead, they allowed him to build Mercer Capital under one condition.
Certain assets would remain protected.
Grant listened with disbelief.
"My father never mentioned Halcyon."
"That was the agreement."
"How do you know?"
Harlan looked ashamed.
"My father was involved."
Grant sat back.
The web extended through generations.
Harlan continued.
"Julian discovered irregular transfers because Thomas was still fulfilling old obligations."
"So my father wasn't stealing?"
"No."
"But he accused Julian."
"To make him stop."
Grant stared at the table.
His father had destroyed his relationship with Julian to protect a secret.
History repeating itself.
"Evelyn?"
"She discovered everything after Julian contacted her."
"Why Caroline?"
Harlan's face tightened.
"Caroline had already been searching."
"For what?"
"The Shaw family lost money through Halcyon decades ago. Their father died believing Thomas Mercer ruined him."
Grant remembered Evelyn and Caroline's father.
David Shaw.
A quiet man.
Accountant.
Dead from a heart attack when Evelyn was twenty.
Harlan said, "Caroline spent most of her adult life trying to prove Mercer wealth came from the Shaw family."
"Did it?"
"Partly."
Grant felt tired.
"Why Noah?"
"Evelyn discovered that Thomas placed one final archive under a bloodline trust."
Grant frowned.
"A what?"
"Access requires biometric confirmation from a direct Mercer descendant born after the trust was created."
Grant's stomach dropped.
"Noah."
Harlan nodded.
"Thomas designed it so neither you nor Julian could access it."
"Why?"
"Because he believed the next generation would be free of the old war."
Grant almost laughed.
His father had been catastrophically wrong.
"What's in the archive?"
"Nobody knows."
"Caroline?"
"She believes it contains ownership records, account numbers, names, everything needed to expose Halcyon."
"And control the assets?"
Harlan hesitated.
"Possibly."
There it was.
Principle and greed often shared the same coat.
Grant asked, "Was Evelyn trying to access it?"
"Yes."
"Did that get her killed?"
Harlan looked down.
"I don't know."
Grant slammed his hand onto the table.
"You know something."
Harlan flinched.
"The night Evelyn died, she called me."
Grant's breath stopped.
"What did she say?"
"She said she had made a mistake."
"What mistake?"
"Trusting Caroline."
The room became silent.
Harlan continued.
"Evelyn discovered Caroline had made contact with Halcyon independently."
"Why?"
"Caroline thought she could force them to return Shaw assets."
"What happened?"
"They used her."
Grant looked toward Noah's bedroom.
"So Caroline works for Halcyon."
"Sometimes."
"That isn't an answer."
"With people like this, nobody works for anyone forever."
Daniel finally spoke.
"What about Vivienne?"
Harlan looked at him.
"Caroline recruited her."
Grant's anger sharpened.
"Why?"
"To marry Grant."
"Then change the trust."
"Yes."
"Drug me."
Harlan nodded.
"Create incapacity. Gain temporary custody. Use Noah."
Grant clenched his jaw.
"And the violence?"
"That wasn't part of the plan."
Grant looked toward the door.
Harlan continued.
"Vivienne became unstable. Caroline wanted her removed weeks ago."
"Then why wasn't she?"
"Because Vivienne threatened to expose everything."
Grant understood.
Yesterday's attack had been a fracture inside the conspiracy.
Not the intended final move.
"And Tessa?"
Harlan's eyes changed.
Grant noticed.
"What about her?"
Harlan looked toward the bedroom.
"Ask her."
Grant stood.
"No."
Harlan's voice became urgent.
"Grant."
"You tell me."
Harlan whispered.
"Tessa wasn't chosen to help Caroline."
"Who chose her?"
"Evelyn."
Grant stared.
"That's impossible."
Harlan shook his head.
"Evelyn arranged Tessa's placement before she died."
Grant turned toward the closed bedroom door.
"Why?"
"Because she knew she might not survive long enough to protect Noah herself."
Grant's throat tightened.
"How did Evelyn know Tessa?"
Harlan looked toward the door.
"Because Tessa was there when Noah was born."
Grant remembered the list.
Tessa Monroe.
His voice became almost inaudible.
"Who is she?"
The bedroom door opened.
Tessa stood there.
She had heard everything.
Her face was pale.
Noah rested against her shoulder.
Tessa looked at Grant.
May you like
Then said the words she had apparently been carrying for nearly a year.
"My name isn't Tessa Monroe."
