Chapter 15 - The Second Child)

For seven minutes nobody moved.

Grant stood in the hidden basement beneath the old Mercer lake house with Evelyn's last sentence repeating in his mind.

The second child is alive.

Daniel heard it too.

So had two federal agents standing nearby.

Tessa had not.

Grant had refused to let her bring Noah anywhere near Lake Arden.

Now he called her.

She answered immediately.

"Did you find Evelyn?"

"She's alive."

Silence.

Then Tessa whispered, "Thank God."

Grant closed his eyes.

Hearing someone else say it made the impossible more real.

"I spoke to her."

"Where is she?"

"I don't know yet."

"What did she say?"

Grant hesitated.

"She told me not to bring Noah."

Tessa's relief vanished.

"Why?"

"She didn't explain."

Grant looked at the biometric cabinet.

"What do you know about another child born the same night as Noah?"

Tessa said nothing.

Grant's pulse accelerated.

"Tessa."

"I don't know much."

"But you know something."

"I remember the mother."

Grant sat slowly.

"Who?"

"A woman named Lena."

"Lena what?"

"I don't remember. She arrived during the storm. No family with her."

"Boy or girl?"

"Boy."

Grant looked at Daniel.

The second descendant key.

"Do you remember the father?"

"No."

"Was the baby in the nursery with Noah?"

"Yes."

Grant's skin chilled.

"The bracelet found in Noah's bassinet."

"Could have belonged to him."

"Where did they go?"

"I don't know. When I returned for my next shift, both mother and baby were gone."

Grant asked, "Discharged?"

"I assumed so."

"Find out."

Tessa went silent.

Then said, "Grant."

"Yes?"

"I remember one more thing."

"What?"

"Caroline spoke to the woman."

Grant stood.

"When?"

"Before Noah was born. I saw them in the hallway."

"Did they know each other?"

"I thought Caroline was helping because the woman was alone."

Grant's mind raced.

"Anything else?"

"The woman's room was registered private."

"So?"

"Hospital staff couldn't access her chart without special authorization."

"Who authorized it?"

"I don't know."

Grant looked at Daniel.

Daniel was already calling investigators.

Within two hours they had an answer.

The woman admitted that night under the name Lena Ward did not legally exist.

Her address was false.

Insurance record false.

Phone disconnected.

But the baby's footprint card had survived in archived hospital records.

Male infant.

Healthy.

Born forty three minutes before Noah.

The father field was blank.

Grant stared at the document.

Then at the biometric cabinet.

"Two descendants."

Daniel said, "Maybe Thomas Mercer had another grandchild."

"Julian."

"Possible."

Grant shook his head.

"Julian would have told Evelyn."

"Unless he didn't know."

An agent interrupted.

They had located the origin of Evelyn's phone call.

Not exact location.

A rural cellular tower thirty miles north of Lake Arden.

Teams were moving.

Grant wanted to go.

The lead agent refused until the area was secured.

So Grant waited.

Waiting had become torture.

He walked through the old lake house.

Memories returned.

Julian jumping from the dock.

Their father teaching them to fish.

Grant breaking his wrist after climbing onto the roof.

A childhood that now felt constructed around omissions.

In the upstairs study he found an old wooden panel carved with initials.

G M.

J M.

Grant remembered carving them.

Below the two initials was another.

C M.

He frowned.

He did not remember it.

Daniel entered.

"What?"

Grant pointed.

"C M."

"Caroline?"

"She wasn't a Mercer."

"Could be old."

Grant touched the carving.

Same depth.

Same age.

A memory surfaced.

A little girl at the lake.

Older than Julian.

Dark hair.

She visited one summer.

Their father told Grant she was a cousin.

Grant had forgotten her name.

He closed his eyes.

Clara.

Clara Mercer.

He had not thought about her in thirty years.

"Daniel."

"Yeah?"

"My father had a niece."

Daniel waited.

"His brother's daughter."

"Where is she now?"

"I don't know."

Grant tried to remember.

Thomas Mercer's older brother, Nathan, died when Grant was young.

Clara and her mother moved away.

The family never discussed them.

Daniel searched.

Nathan Mercer officially died in 1994.

His daughter Clara disappeared from public records soon afterward.

But one document remained.

A marriage certificate.

Clara Mercer married David Shaw.

Grant stared.

"Evelyn's father."

Daniel's eyes widened.

If accurate, Evelyn and Caroline's mother had married David Shaw after his first marriage.

Clara Mercer could have been their biological mother.

That meant Evelyn and Caroline carried Mercer blood.

Grant sat down.

The room spun.

"Noah has Mercer blood from both sides."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"And if Lena Ward was connected to Caroline..."

The second child might also descend from Clara.

The archive did not necessarily require Grant and Julian's descendants.

It required Thomas's family bloodline.

Grant's phone rang.

The federal agent at the search site.

"We found a building."

Grant stood.

"Evelyn?"

"Evidence she was there."

"Was?"

"Recently moved."

Grant closed his eyes.

"How recently?"

"Maybe hours."

"Anything else?"

A pause.

"Someone left you something."

Grant drove there under escort.

The building was an abandoned veterinary clinic near a forest road.

Inside, agents found the same medications from Lake Arden.

Food.

Clothing.

A mattress.

And fresh blood droplets that appeared minor but recent.

Grant refused to imagine what they meant.

On a metal table lay an envelope.

His name was written across it.

Inside was a phone.

One video file.

Grant pressed play.

Julian appeared.

Alive.

Tired.

Bruised.

He stared directly at the camera.

"Grant, if you found this, I'm probably already moving Evelyn again."

Grant's heart accelerated.

Julian continued.

"I know you think I'm working with Caroline. I'm not."

A sound outside the recorded frame made Julian glance away.

"I've spent nine years trying to keep Halcyon from finding the archive."

He looked back.

"Dad didn't hide money there. He hid identities."

Grant frowned.

"Names of children born into Halcyon families. Children moved, adopted, renamed and hidden so the organization could control bloodlines without anyone knowing."

Grant felt sick.

Julian continued.

"That's why the hospital mattered."

His expression tightened.

"Noah wasn't the child they tried to steal."

Grant stopped breathing.

"The other baby was."

Julian leaned toward the camera.

"Caroline needed that child because he can open the second half of the archive."

Grant looked at Daniel.

Julian continued.

"Evelyn caught the switch. Marianne helped her reverse it before anyone noticed. That's why Marianne died."

The seven missing minutes.

The wrong bracelet.

Evelyn's suspicion.

It finally made sense.

Julian said, "The DNA result for Noah was real. Evelyn didn't distrust Noah. She distrusted what happened to the other baby."

Grant's eyes burned.

His wife had spent her final free months investigating a child who was not even hers.

Exactly the kind of thing Evelyn would do.

Julian continued.

"The baby's mother was using the name Lena Ward. That wasn't her real name."

He looked exhausted.

"Her real name was Clara Vale."

Daniel whispered, "Vale."

Richard.

Grant's heart accelerated.

Julian confirmed it.

"Richard Vale's daughter."

Grant stared at the screen.

Richard had a daughter.

No one knew.

Julian continued.

"Richard hid her from Halcyon for years. Caroline found her when she became pregnant."

A sound echoed in the recording.

Julian looked toward the door.

Then spoke faster.

"Grant, the second child is alive. His name is Ethan."

Grant swallowed.

"Richard moved him after the hospital. I've been protecting his location."

Julian looked directly into the camera.

"Do not open the archive until you find Ethan."

The video shook.

Someone shouted in the distance.

Julian stood.

Before the recording ended, he added one final sentence.

"And Grant, there is something Evelyn doesn't know."

The screen went black.

Grant stared.

"That's it?"

Daniel took the phone.

"There's another file."

Grant looked at him.

A text document.

One line.

A location.

Tessa called before Grant could read it.

He answered.

Her voice was shaking.

"Grant, come home."

He stood.

"What happened?"

"Noah is safe."

"Then what?"

"Someone got inside."

His blood froze.

"Tessa."

"I'm okay. Security is okay. Nobody was attacked."

"Who got inside?"

"They didn't stay."

Grant looked at Daniel.

"What did they take?"

Tessa whispered, "Nothing."

"Then what did they want?"

"They left a child."

Grant stopped breathing.

"What?"

"A little boy."

"How old?"

"About five."

Grant's eyes moved to Julian's frozen image.

Tessa continued.

"He was sitting on the front steps when security found him."

Grant could barely speak.

"What does he say his name is?"

There was a long silence.

Then Tessa answered.

"Ethan."

Grant closed his eyes.

The second child had just arrived at Mercer House.

But that was not why Tessa sounded terrified.

"There is something else," she said.

Grant gripped the phone.

"What?"

"The boy had a photograph in his pocket."

"Of who?"

Tessa's voice cracked.

"You."

Grant said nothing.

"And on the back someone wrote a message."

"What message?"

Tessa read it slowly.

"ASK GRANT WHY HIS FATHER HAD TWO SONS BORN THE SAME YEAR."

Grant stared at Daniel.

The world seemed to stop.

Thomas Mercer had only two acknowledged sons.

Grant.

Julian.

Born three years apart.

The message made no sense.

Unless everything Grant believed about his family was wrong.

He looked again at the location Julian had left on the phone.

Then another message appeared beneath it.

Incoming.

Unknown sender.

A photograph loaded.

Evelyn sat inside a vehicle.

Alive.

Beside her sat Julian.

Neither appeared restrained.

Neither looked surprised.

And in the driver's seat was a woman Grant recognized immediately.

Caroline Shaw.

Grant's phone rang.

He answered.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then Evelyn's voice came through.

"Grant, before you come looking for me, there is something I have to tell you about Julian."

Grant gripped the phone.

"What?"

Evelyn started crying.

May you like

"He's not your brother."

The line went dead.
