Chapter 11 - The Woman Evelyn Chose)

Grant could hear Noah breathing.
Nothing else.
Tessa stood in the doorway holding him.
Grant stared at her.
"What is your name?"
She hesitated.
"Theresa Shaw."
Grant's stomach tightened.
"Shaw."
She nodded.
Harlan looked away.
Grant understood before she explained.
"You're related to Evelyn."
"Second cousin."
"Caroline?"
"Also."
Grant laughed once in disbelief.
"Eleven months."
Tessa's eyes filled.
"I wanted to tell you."
"When?"
"I don't know."
"That's convenient."
"Grant."
"You entered my house under a false name."
"Monroe was my mother's maiden name."
"That's supposed to make it better?"
"No."
"Brightwell was fake."
"I didn't know that."
"Did Evelyn arrange your placement?"
"I didn't know that either."
Grant stared at her.
"Then what did you know?"
Tessa gently placed Noah in the travel crib.
The baby remained calm.
She closed the bedroom door behind her.
"When Noah was born, I was working at St. Catherine's Hospital."
Grant frowned.
"You told me you'd always been a private caregiver."
"I was a neonatal care assistant before that."
Grant remembered Noah's delivery.
It had been chaotic.
Evelyn went into labor early.
A rotating team of nurses and assistants moved through the room.
He could not remember every face.
Tessa continued.
"I was assigned to Evelyn for part of the night."
"Did she know you were family?"
"No. Not initially."
"Then how?"
"My badge said Theresa Shaw."
Grant understood.
Evelyn would have recognized the family name.
Tessa continued.
"She asked about my parents. We realized the connection."
"Did Caroline know?"
"Yes."
Grant's anger sharpened.
"So Evelyn's sister knew you."
"She knew of me. We were not close."
"Why change your name?"
Tessa looked at Harlan.
Harlan said nothing.
Grant saw it.
"He told you."
Tessa nodded.
"After Evelyn died, Dr. Harlan contacted me."
Grant turned on the doctor.
Harlan raised his hands.
"Evelyn left instructions."
"With you?"
"With several people."
"Why not me?"
Harlan's expression softened.
"Because she believed you were being watched."
Grant looked at Tessa.
"What instructions?"
"She asked that if anything happened to her, someone outside your normal household be available to help with Noah."
"And you just agreed?"
"Not immediately."
Tessa took a breath.
"I thought it sounded paranoid. Then my employer, the Ralstons, suddenly told me they were moving. Brightwell contacted me a week later. I believed it was coincidence."
"But it wasn't."
"No."
"Why use Monroe?"
"Dr. Harlan suggested it."
Grant looked at him.
"Why?"
"To keep Caroline from recognizing the name."
Grant's voice hardened.
"Caroline knew anyway."
Tessa nodded.
"Apparently."
Grant walked toward the window.
Every truth contained another deception.
But one fact remained.
Tessa had protected Noah when she could have walked away.
She had risked herself.
Whatever else she had hidden, that mattered.
Grant turned.
"Did Evelyn tell you anything about the archive?"
"No."
"Julian?"
"No."
"Halcyon?"
"I had never heard the name until today."
Grant looked at Harlan.
"Do you believe her?"
"Yes."
"That means nothing anymore."
Harlan accepted the insult.
Daniel entered from the hallway.
"We have a problem."
Grant almost smiled at the absurdity.
"Only one?"
"Vivienne disappeared."
Grant turned.
"What?"
"Her attorney says she never arrived at the apartment."
"Police?"
"Searching."
Grant felt no sympathy.
Then Daniel added, "Her car was found near the river."
Tessa's expression changed.
"Do they think she's dead?"
"No body."
Grant looked at Harlan.
"Caroline?"
"Possibly."
"Why?"
"If Vivienne had become a liability."
Grant thought of the violence.
The recording.
The forged documents.
Vivienne knew enough to destroy someone.
Perhaps many people.
Daniel continued.
"There's more. Richard Vale's crash wasn't accidental."
Grant looked at him.
"Who was driving?"
"Unknown woman."
"Caroline?"
"Face obscured."
Daniel placed a photograph on the table.
Traffic camera.
A black SUV leaving the garage.
A woman driving.
Passenger seat occupied by a man.
Grant enlarged the image.
The male passenger turned toward the camera.
Julian.
Grant stared.
"My brother was with the person who killed Richard."
Harlan shook his head.
"You don't know Richard was murdered."
Daniel answered.
"The vehicle accelerated through two barriers."
Harlan went silent.
Grant looked at Julian's image.
"Is he helping Caroline?"
Tessa asked.
"Or following her?"
That was possible.
Julian had spent years hiding.
Perhaps he was hunting the same people.
Grant's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
This time a text.
STOP TRUSTING THE PEOPLE EVELYN TRUSTED.
Attached was a photograph.
Grant opened it.
Tessa gasped.
The image showed Grant standing outside the hospital the night Noah was born.
Behind him, partially hidden by a doorway, was Richard Vale.
Beside Richard stood Caroline.
And behind Caroline was the man Grant had just seen in the vehicle with Richard's killer.
Julian.
All three had been at the hospital.
Grant enlarged the image.
Something in Julian's hands caught his attention.
A newborn identification bracelet.
Grant's blood ran cold.
Tessa leaned closer.
"Why would Julian have a hospital bracelet?"
Harlan's face suddenly changed.
Grant saw recognition.
"What?"
Harlan did not answer.
"What?"
The doctor sat down slowly.
"When Noah was born, there was an incident."
Grant's pulse accelerated.
"What incident?"
"The nursery alarm activated."
Grant remembered vaguely.
A nurse said there had been a technical fault.
Harlan continued.
"For seven minutes, the infant tracking system went offline."
Grant felt sick.
"What are you saying?"
"Another baby was in the nursery that night."
Grant stared.
"Another Mercer baby?"
Harlan shook his head.
"No."
"Then why does it matter?"
Harlan looked at Tessa.
Then Grant.
"Because the other child's bracelet was found in Noah's bassinet."
Silence.
Grant whispered, "Was Noah ever out of sight?"
Harlan did not answer quickly enough.
Grant stepped forward.
"Was my son ever out of sight?"
"Seven minutes."
Grant's entire body went cold.
Harlan continued.
"Evelyn demanded immediate testing."
"What testing?"
"Blood type. Footprint comparison. Later DNA."
Grant swallowed.
"And?"
Harlan looked terrified.
"The DNA report said Noah was yours."
Grant exhaled.
May you like
Then Harlan added.
"But Evelyn never believed the report."
