Chapter 9 - The Tower Built on a Lie

Mercer Tower had forty-eight floors, three thousand employees, and a security system Gabriel had designed himself.

That made it the worst possible place for a hostage exchange.

Arthur ordered the building evacuated under the excuse of an electrical emergency. Federal agents replaced the lobby guards. Snipers took positions on neighboring rooftops. Naomi Reed prepared a false copy of the ledger.

Sebastian sent new instructions at 11:47 a.m.

Elena was to enter through the public lobby carrying the ledger in a white garment box. No visible police. No tracking devices. If anyone followed her beyond the elevators, Julian would die.

Arthur wanted to go in her place.

Elena refused.

"He has spent my whole life deciding where I am allowed to stand. I am ending that today."

Arthur touched her shoulder. "Courage does not mean walking into every trap."

"No. It means knowing it is a trap and choosing what matters more than fear."

At noon, Elena crossed the empty marble lobby.

The elevator doors opened by themselves.

Inside, the control panel showed no floor numbers. Only a black swan symbol glowed above the emergency button.

The elevator rose.

It stopped at the forty-ninth floor.

Mercer Tower had no forty-ninth floor.

The doors opened onto a hidden level between the executive offices and the roof. Arthur had never known it existed.

The space looked like a wedding hall. White chairs faced a glass wall overlooking the city. At the front stood Sebastian in a black suit.

Julian sat beside him, wrists bound.

Elena knew him immediately. The shape of his eyes mirrored Isabella's. A healing cut crossed his forehead. He looked exhausted, but alive.

"Elena," he said.

Her name broke in his voice.

Sebastian held a pistol against Julian's ribs.

"The ledger."

Elena placed the garment box on the floor.

"Let him walk to me."

"You inherited your mother's talent for negotiation. Unfortunately, you also inherited her failure to understand power."

"She understood you well enough to hide evidence for twenty-seven years."

Sebastian's smile thinned.

He opened the box and removed the false ledger fragments. A small scanner in his cuff passed over them.

The device flashed red.

"Copies."

He fired.

The bullet struck the floor beside Elena's foot.

Julian lunged sideways, knocking Sebastian's arm. Elena grabbed a metal chair and swung it. The chair hit Sebastian's shoulder. Julian drove into him, and all three crashed against the glass wall.

The hidden floor erupted with gunfire as federal agents breached from the roof.

Sebastian dragged Julian toward a service door. Elena caught Julian's hand. For one second, brother and sister held on to each other while Sebastian pulled from the other side.

Then the glass beneath them cracked.

Arthur burst through the stairwell entrance.

"Elena!"

Sebastian released Julian and fired at Arthur.

Gabriel stepped between them.

The bullet tore through Gabriel's side.

Arthur fired back.

Sebastian vanished through the service door.

Elena and Julian fell together as the glass panel collapsed outward.

A safety cable hidden beneath the ceremonial carpet caught Julian's ankle. Elena hung from his wrist forty-nine floors above the street.

Arthur dropped to the edge and reached for her.

"Take my hand!"

Elena looked down at the city. Wind tore at her dress. Julian screamed as the cable tightened around his leg.

Arthur stretched farther.

This time, Elena reached back.

He pulled her onto the floor. Agents hauled Julian up seconds later.

Sebastian escaped through a maintenance shaft, but the exchange failed. Julian was free. Gabriel survived surgery. The hidden level was seized.

Inside its walls, investigators found decades of surveillance records on Mercer employees and executives.

The White Veil had helped finance Mercer Horizon's first major expansion.

Arthur's empire had been built partly with their money.

That evening, Julian sat beside Elena in the hospital waiting room. They had shared only fragments of their lives. He remembered Isabella visiting him under different names. He remembered being moved from family to family. He remembered Sebastian finding him at seventeen.

"She told me you were safe," he said.

"She told me nothing about you."

"Maybe that was her way of keeping us alive."

Arthur approached carrying Gabriel's medical update.

Before he could speak, Julian stood.

"You are not my father," he said.

Arthur's face tightened.

"No."

"Then who is?"

Arthur looked at Elena.

The answer was in the letter, but not the name.

Julian removed a ring from his pocket. He had stolen it from Sebastian during the struggle.

Inside the band were engraved two initials.

B.M.

Naomi Reed saw them and went pale.

"Those initials belong to Benedict Mercer," she said.

Arthur's older brother.

The man who had died thirty years ago.
