Chapter 7 - The Fifteen Brides

Victoria was held without bail.

Sebastian's reappearance triggered an international search, but every lead vanished within hours. His fingerprints in the hotel matched old records. His face appeared on dozens of cameras. Yet no vehicle, phone signal, or witness placed him outside the ballroom after the smoke cleared.

It was as if the dead man had stepped back into his grave.

Elena focused on the dresses in the Bellweather Theater.

Federal technicians cataloged forty-three gowns. Fifteen contained hidden compartments. Inside each was a strip of microfilm etched with transactions, account numbers, and family names.

The fragments formed the black swan ledger.

But one piece was missing.

The fifteenth compartment was empty.

Its gown belonged to a bride named Celeste Armand, an heiress who disappeared on her wedding night twenty-nine years earlier. Her family's shipping company was later absorbed by a holding corporation connected to Sebastian.

Naomi Reed assembled a task force to trace the ledger. The evidence revealed a pattern spanning four decades. Wealthy heirs married partners selected by the White Veil. Prenuptial agreements were altered. Medical records were falsified. Accidents followed. Assets moved through trusts controlled by a hidden council.

The council's leader was identified only as the Bridegroom.

No photograph. No legal name. No confirmed voice.

Arthur offered Mercer Horizon's forensic accountants. Reed accepted reluctantly. She did not trust billionaires, even cooperative ones.

Elena joined the review despite having no financial training. She knew fabric, patterns, and the small inconsistencies other people overlooked. Isabella had taught her that every seam revealed the hand that made it.

On the third day, Elena found the pattern.

Each ledger fragment contained a decorative border of numbers. The accountants assumed they were security marks. Elena recognized them as dress measurements.

Bust. Waist. Hip. Hem.

Converted through Isabella's design chart, the numbers spelled locations.

The missing fragment was hidden at Rosehaven Chapel, the place where Isabella and Arthur had planned to marry.

Arthur had never told Elena they were engaged.

"We chose a date," he said as they drove through the rain. "Then Isabella found the dead swan in your crib. She canceled everything the next morning."

"Did you blame me?"

Arthur turned sharply. "Never."

"You lost her because I existed."

"I lost her because dangerous people decided love was leverage. You were the best thing we made from it."

Elena looked out the window before he could see her cry.

Rosehaven Chapel stood abandoned at the edge of a forest. Ivy covered the stone walls. The bell tower had collapsed years earlier. Inside, broken pews faced an altar stained by rain.

They found Celeste Armand's gown sealed beneath the altar steps.

The missing ledger fragment was stitched into the train.

So was a second letter.

This one was not addressed to Elena.

It was addressed to Arthur.

He opened it with trembling hands.

Arthur,

If I have failed, Elena may learn the truth before you are ready to give it. Forgive me for making you live as a stranger to your own child. I believed distance would protect her, but distance can become its own kind of wound.

There is another truth I kept from you.

When I disappeared, I was pregnant.

Arthur stopped reading.

Elena felt the room tilt.

The note from the hotel returned to her.

Arthur is not the only father you have lost.

Arthur forced himself to continue.

The child was a boy. Isabella gave birth while hiding in Canada. She named him Julian. She wrote that she had placed him with a family she trusted because Sebastian's men were close behind her.

The final lines were smeared.

If Julian survives, he carries the second swan mark. Do not search for him until the Bridegroom is exposed. The organization believes he died with me. If they learn otherwise, they will use one child to control the other.

Elena stared at Arthur.

"I have a brother."

A floorboard creaked behind them.

Gabriel turned with his weapon drawn.

A young man stood in the chapel doorway.

He was perhaps thirty, tall, with dark hair wet from the rain. Around his neck hung a silver pendant shaped like a swan.

"You had a brother," he said.

May you like

Then he tossed a bloodstained passport onto the floor.

The name inside was Julian Maribel.
