Chapter 13 - The Other Elena
The duplicate birth record was created three days after Elena's birth.
Both certificates named Isabella Maribel as the mother. Both listed Arthur Mercer as the father. Both used the same hospital, the same attending physician, and nearly identical identification numbers.
One child was Elena Sofia Maribel.
The other was Elena Rose Mercer.
Elena had never used a middle name.
Isabella insisted she had held only one baby.
The hospital had closed twenty years earlier, and its records were transferred to St. Orison Medical Center, where Julian had been held. Most files were destroyed in the chemical fire.
Naomi Reed found one surviving nurse, Margaret Bell, living under an assisted-care order in Maine.
Elena, Isabella, and Ortiz visited her.
Margaret was eighty-nine and suffered from memory loss, but she recognized Isabella immediately.
"The swan lady," she said. "You came back for the wrong baby."
Isabella gripped the arms of her chair.
"What are you saying?"
Margaret described a power failure on the night Elena was born. Two infant girls were in the private maternity wing. One belonged to Isabella. The other belonged to a woman whose name Margaret could not remember. During the outage, Dr. Elias Venn ordered both babies moved.
When the lights returned, one crib was empty.
A second baby appeared an hour later with no bracelet.
"Which child did I take home?" Isabella asked.
Margaret began to cry. "I do not know. They made us sign papers. Judge Crane came before sunrise. He said no child had gone missing."
Arthur's brother had been involved from the beginning.
DNA testing proved Elena was Isabella and Arthur's biological daughter.
So the second record did not represent a switch.
It represented another baby deliberately registered as theirs.
A legal duplicate.
Someone had created a child who could claim Mercer blood without sharing it.
The master ledger referenced identity replacements used to seize inheritances. If Elena died, the duplicate could appear with documents proving she was Arthur's daughter.
"A replacement heir," Ortiz said.
Arthur ordered a search of every trust connected to his estate. One dormant account named Elena Rose Mercer as contingent beneficiary. It had been updated six months earlier by an attorney employed by Victoria.
The duplicate was alive.
Security footage from the attorney's office showed a woman entering with dark hair and Elena's height. Her face remained hidden beneath a hat, but her signature matched Elena's handwriting with disturbing accuracy.
Isabella recognized the posture.
"Victoria trained her," she said. "The White Veil kept behavioral files. They studied voices, habits, signatures."
Elena remembered the surveillance records in Mercer Tower.
Someone had watched her for years not only to find her, but to copy her.
Gabriel, recovering under house arrest while cooperating with prosecutors, admitted that White Veil operatives had asked him for Elena's school records, medical history, and private photographs.
He claimed he refused.
Arthur believed him less easily now.
The duplicate struck first.
A video appeared online showing Elena entering a private bank and removing documents from an evidence vault. The timestamp placed her there while she was reopening Maribel House, but the footage looked authentic. News channels accused her of stealing the master ledger page.
Police arrived at the boutique with a warrant.
Elena was arrested in front of her staff.
As officers led her outside, a woman stood across the street beneath a white umbrella.
She lowered it just enough for Elena to see her face.
It was Elena's face.
Not perfectly. The jaw was narrower. The eyes were lighter. But surgery, makeup, and years of observation had created a living reflection.
The woman smiled and touched two fingers to her wrist three times.
