Chapter 2 - The Name Hidden Beneath the Floor

The police arrived in waves.

Uniformed officers sealed the boutique while paramedics treated Elena's bruised scalp and Arthur's cut forehead. Reporters gathered behind the barricades, filming the shattered entrance and the billionaire standing beside the woman Victoria had thrown to the floor.

Arthur Mercer was not merely wealthy. He had built Mercer Horizon from a regional construction company into an international infrastructure empire. He avoided celebrity interviews, never attended gossip events, and had spent twenty years building a reputation for ruthless precision.

The image of him crashing through a bridal shop to protect Elena spread across the city within minutes.

Victoria tried to use that to her advantage.

She stood near the reception desk with a blanket around her shoulders, telling Detective Lena Ortiz that Arthur had attacked her business without cause.

"She came in without proof of an appointment," Victoria said, pointing at Elena. "She became aggressive when I asked her to leave. Mr. Mercer destroyed my property. I defended myself."

A shopper stepped forward.

"That is a lie," she said. "Victoria grabbed the woman first. I recorded it."

Then another customer offered video. Then a third.

By the time Detective Ortiz finished collecting statements, Victoria's story had collapsed.

She was arrested for assault.

As officers escorted her toward the broken doorway, Victoria twisted around and looked directly at Elena.

"The swan dies twice," she said.

Arthur went still.

Detective Ortiz noticed.

"What does that mean?"

"Nothing," Arthur answered too quickly.

After Victoria was taken away, fire inspectors examined the structural damage. The SUV had destroyed the entrance but missed the building's main support column by less than two feet. Arthur's driver insisted the crash had not been intentional. The brakes had failed while he was pulling up to the curb.

Arthur did not believe him.

Neither did Gabriel.

They found a clean cut in the hydraulic line beneath the vehicle.

Someone had expected Arthur to arrive.

Someone had wanted him dead before he reached Elena.

Detective Ortiz ordered the SUV impounded and expanded the scene. She also demanded a copy of the old security recording. The boutique's system showed no file matching it. The video had appeared remotely, played once, and vanished.

But Elena remembered every frame.

Especially the folder in her mother's hands.

"You knew she was connected to this place," Elena said when she and Arthur were finally alone in the rear consultation room.

Arthur looked through the doorway at the fallen gowns and scattered glass.

"I knew Isabella designed dresses before you were born. I knew she had a business partner named Victoria. I did not know the business became Maison Vale."

"You never told me."

"Your mother made me promise not to."

"My mother died when I was six."

Arthur's jaw tightened.

"That is what I believed."

Elena stared at him.

A technician from the city inspection team called from the front of the boutique. One section of marble had cracked beneath the SUV's front tire. Under the broken tile was not concrete, but a hollow space.

Workers lifted the damaged slab.

A metal hatch lay beneath it.

Victoria's store manager claimed she had never seen it. The building plans showed no basement access in that location.

Detective Ortiz returned with a warrant before sunset.

The hatch opened onto a narrow staircase.

The air below smelled of dust, rust, and old perfume.

Elena descended behind Ortiz, Arthur, and Gabriel. At the bottom was a room no larger than a storage closet. Wooden shelves held yellowed ledgers, fabric samples, and cardboard boxes sealed with wax impressions of a swan.

On the far wall, someone had painted two names.

ISABELLA MARIBEL

VICTORIA VALE

Between them was a third name scratched so deeply into the plaster that the letters cut through several layers of paint.

ELENA MARIBEL MERCER

Elena touched the inscription.

"Mercer?"

Arthur closed his eyes.

Detective Ortiz looked between them.

"Mr. Mercer, is there something you need to tell us?"

Before he could answer, Gabriel found a loose floorboard. Beneath it lay a narrow metal box. The lock was shaped like a swan.

Elena reached into her purse and removed the appointment card. Something hard pressed inside the paper lining.

She tore the card open.

A small silver key slid into her palm.

Arthur whispered Isabella's name.

Elena inserted the key.

The box opened.

Inside was a birth certificate, a photograph, and a sealed letter addressed to Elena.

The birth certificate listed Isabella Maribel as the mother.

The space for the father contained one name.

Arthur Mercer.

Elena looked up slowly.

Arthur's face had lost all color.

"Tell me it is false," she said.

He could not.
