Chapter 6 - The Dead Man at the Wedding Table

The date led them to a private wedding showcase at the Harrow Grand Hotel.
The event had been advertised as an invitation-only exhibition for collectors of historic bridal fashion. Twelve gowns from famous designers would be displayed in a mirrored ballroom, followed by a charity auction. According to the guest list, Victoria Vale had reserved an entire table under a shell company.
Detective Ortiz wanted Elena nowhere near the hotel.
Elena refused.
"My mother left the photograph for me. Whoever sent it expects me to come."
"That is exactly why you should stay away."
"I spent twenty-one years being protected by lies. I am done hiding behind them."
Arthur watched her from across the conference room. He looked as if he wanted to order security to carry her somewhere safe. Instead, he nodded once.
"Then we go together."
The plan was simple. Federal agents would pose as hotel staff. Ortiz would monitor the ballroom from a service corridor. Gabriel would remain with Elena at all times. Arthur would attend publicly to draw attention away from the undercover officers.
Elena wore the Maribel gown.
The seamstress restored it without changing Isabella's original stitching. When Elena stepped from the dressing suite, Arthur forgot to breathe.
"You look like her," he said.
Elena studied him in the mirror. "That is not the same as looking at me."
His eyes met hers. "No. You are braver."
The ballroom glittered beneath chandeliers. Wealthy collectors drifted between mannequins while a string quartet played near the windows. Cameras turned when Arthur and Elena entered together.
Victoria was already there.
She wore red.
The bruise on her wrist from Gabriel's grip had been covered with makeup. Her smile sharpened when she saw Elena in the Maribel gown.
"Grave robbery suits you," she said.
Elena stopped in front of her. "So does bail."
Victoria's expression twitched.
A waiter placed champagne on their table. Around his cuff was a tiny black-thread swan.
Gabriel noticed at the same moment Elena did.
The waiter moved away.
Gabriel followed.
Five seconds later, the ballroom lights dimmed for the auction.
A spotlight illuminated the final gown: a pearl-white dress displayed inside a glass case. The auctioneer announced that it had been designed by Isabella Maribel and never worn.
Elena knew that was a lie. The seams were too modern. The embroidery copied Isabella's style but lacked the hidden twin swans.
The first bid came from Victoria.
One million dollars.
The second came from Arthur.
Two million.
The numbers climbed while guests whispered. Elena understood that neither of them cared about the dress. They were bidding for whoever had arranged the auction.
At ten million dollars, a voice came from the rear of the ballroom.
"Fifteen."
An older man stepped through the doors.
Sebastian Vale had aged, but not enough to hide himself. His hair was white, his frame thinner than in the photograph, and a scar crossed his jaw. The room erupted in confusion. Several guests recognized him as the billionaire philanthropist declared dead twelve years earlier.
Victoria did not look surprised.
She looked relieved.
Sebastian walked to her table and kissed her cheek.
"You kept the shop," he said.
"You took your time."
Arthur moved in front of Elena.
Federal agents closed the ballroom exits.
Sebastian smiled at them.
"Mr. Mercer. Still crashing into rooms you were never invited to enter."
"Where is Isabella?"
"Always the wrong question."
Sebastian lifted a bidder's paddle. "Fifteen million and one dollar."
The auctioneer, visibly terrified, struck the gavel.
The glass case opened automatically.
Inside the false Maribel gown was not a ledger fragment.
It was a bomb.
Red numbers appeared beneath the skirt.
Thirty seconds.
Guests screamed and surged toward the doors. Agents tried to control the crowd. Arthur pulled Elena behind a marble column as Ortiz shouted for the bomb squad.
Sebastian remained beside the table.
"The doors are magnetically locked," he said calmly. "They open when Elena gives me the swan key."
Elena reached for her purse.
Arthur caught her wrist. "No."
"There are two hundred people in this room."
"He may detonate it anyway."
"He may. But I will not let fear make the choice for me."
She stepped toward Sebastian and held up the silver key.
The timer showed twelve seconds.
Sebastian extended his hand.
Elena threw the key across the ballroom.
Not to him.
To Victoria.
Victoria caught it instinctively.
Sebastian's smile disappeared.
"Now everyone knows who you trusted to keep it," Elena said.
Victoria stared at the key, then at her husband.
For the first time, fear passed between them.
The timer reached three.
Two.
One.
Nothing happened.
The bomb was a decoy.
The ballroom doors unlocked.
Federal agents rushed Sebastian, but smoke burst from the centerpiece on Victoria's table. The room vanished behind a gray cloud. By the time the air cleared, Sebastian was gone.
Victoria remained.
So did the swan key, clenched in her fist.
Detective Ortiz arrested her again, this time for conspiracy, public endangerment, and obstruction.
As officers dragged her away, Victoria screamed at Elena.
"He wanted you to give him the key. You gave it to me. Do you know what that means?"
Elena did not.
Then Gabriel returned from the service corridor with blood on his shirt.
The waiter had escaped.
But Gabriel had found something in the man's abandoned jacket.
A photograph of Elena sleeping in the secure apartment.
May you like
And beneath it, a handwritten note from Isabella.
Arthur is not the only father you have lost.
