Chapter 8 - The Man Wearing Her Brother's Name

The stranger called himself Adrian Cross.
He claimed he had worked as a courier for the White Veil for six years. His job was to move documents between private banks, family offices, and legal firms without knowing what the packages contained. Two months earlier, he had been ordered to deliver Julian Maribel's passport to Sebastian Vale.
Julian was already dead.
"Where is the body?" Elena asked.
"I never saw one. I saw blood, a burned cabin, and this passport."
"Then you do not know he is dead."
Adrian's eyes softened. "No. I know what they wanted me to believe."
Detective Ortiz handcuffed him and searched his coat. He carried no weapon, only a flash drive and the swan pendant. The drive contained photographs of White Veil meetings held in hotels, private clubs, and estates. Faces were hidden behind masks, but several voices could be identified.
One belonged to Judge Crane.
Another belonged to Victoria.
A third sounded like Gabriel.
The recording was poor, but the resemblance was unmistakable.
Arthur looked at his security chief.
Gabriel did not protest. "Take my phone, my records, everything."
Ortiz did.
Adrian said the White Veil had become divided. Sebastian wanted Elena alive because she could unlock accounts Isabella had protected through biometric trusts. The Bridegroom wanted her dead before the ledger became public.
"Which side is Victoria on?" Elena asked.
"Victoria is on Victoria's side. She has survived by betraying everyone before they can betray her."
Adrian offered to lead them to a safe deposit vault where Julian had hidden evidence. In exchange, he wanted immunity.
Naomi Reed refused to promise it, but agreed to a controlled operation.
The vault was beneath an old private bank scheduled for demolition. Adrian knew the access code. The swan pendant opened the inner box.
Inside was a child's drawing.
Two figures stood beneath a black sun. One was labeled MAMA. The other was labeled ELENA.
On the back, a boy had written: She says my sister will find me when the glass house breaks.
There was also a video recorded three weeks earlier.
A man sat in darkness. Only the lower half of his face was visible.
"My name is Julian Maribel," he said. "If this reaches Elena, do not believe anyone who says I am dead. Sebastian has been moving me between properties since I was seventeen. He thinks I know where our mother hid the master ledger. I do not. But I know who the Bridegroom is."
The video cut to static before he gave the name.
A second file showed Julian restrained in a room with green tile walls. Behind him was a metal cabinet stamped with the logo of St. Orison Medical Center, a hospital closed after a chemical fire eleven years earlier.
The task force moved immediately.
St. Orison stood on an industrial island beyond the harbor. Most buildings had been demolished, but one underground treatment wing remained sealed.
They entered before dawn.
The green-tiled corridor smelled of bleach. Fresh footprints crossed the dust. Rooms contained restraints, old medical equipment, and file cabinets filled with records of children whose names had been changed after private adoptions.
Elena found her own file.
It listed Arthur as the biological father.
A second page had been inserted later, naming a man called Thomas Rook.
Arthur recognized the name.
"He was Isabella's driver. He died in the car fire."
The White Veil had prepared a false father in case Arthur ever claimed Elena.
At the end of the corridor, they discovered a locked room.
Inside was a mattress, a camera, and a wall covered with dates.
The most recent date was yesterday.
Julian had been there.
On the mattress lay a fresh bandage stained with blood and a folded newspaper showing the Maison Vale crash.
Across Elena's photograph, someone had written:
SHE OPENED THE FIRST DOOR.
A speaker crackled above them.
Sebastian's voice filled the room.
"Elena, if you want your brother, bring the black swan ledger to Mercer Tower tomorrow at noon. Come alone."
Arthur stared at the speaker.
"He chose my building."
May you like
Gabriel, still under guard, looked toward the security camera.
"Because someone inside Mercer Tower is already waiting for her."
