Chapter 10 - The Brother Buried Without a Body

Arthur rarely spoke about Benedict.
The official history of Mercer Horizon described the brothers as co-founders. Benedict handled finance. Arthur handled construction. Three years after the company began, Benedict died in a mountain climbing accident. His body was never recovered.
Arthur inherited his shares and built the empire alone.
Now Julian wore a ring engraved with Benedict's initials.
"My mother said my father was dead," Julian told them. "She never said how."
Arthur sat across from him in the hospital conference room.
"Benedict and Isabella knew each other before I met her. He introduced us. I believed they were friends."
Elena watched Arthur absorb another betrayal from the woman he had loved.
"Did he know about the White Veil?" she asked.
"He knew investors wanted access to our company. He warned me not to take their money. Then he died, and the financing appeared anyway through an emergency fund. I thought he had arranged it before the accident."
Naomi Reed opened the old corporate records. The emergency fund had come from a trust called Bridewell Capital.
The same trust appeared throughout the black swan ledger.
If Benedict was alive, he could be the Bridegroom.
Arthur rejected it immediately.
"My brother would never hurt Isabella."
Julian placed the ring on the table. "Sebastian wore this around his neck. He called it the Bridegroom's seal."
Silence settled over the room.
Gabriel regained consciousness that night. Ortiz questioned him about the voice recording that resembled his. He admitted he had attended two White Veil gatherings years earlier while searching for his missing father. He had used a false name and secretly recorded conversations, but the organization discovered him.
"They gave me a choice," he said weakly. "Work for them or watch my mother die."
Arthur stared at him. "How long?"
"Twelve years."
Gabriel had leaked minor security information while protecting Arthur from direct attacks. He claimed he never exposed Elena and had sabotaged White Veil operations whenever possible.
"The SUV brake line?" Arthur asked.
"Not me."
"The secure apartment?"
"Not me."
"The hidden floor in my tower?"
Gabriel closed his eyes. "I knew there were sealed architectural voids. I did not know they built a room."
Arthur turned away, devastated by the betrayal.
Elena understood something then. Arthur had spent his life believing money and control could replace trust. Yet every wall he built contained a door someone else had installed.
The task force traced Benedict's old passport. It had been used under an alias in Switzerland, Greece, and Argentina for two decades. The most recent transaction occurred six months earlier at a private clinic outside Boston.
The clinic specialized in reconstructive surgery and identity protection.
Agents raided it at dawn.
They found patient records under coded names. One file belonged to Sebastian. Another belonged to Isabella.
A third belonged to Benedict.
The file contained photographs of a man whose face had been altered repeatedly. The latest image showed a thin elderly patient with pale eyes and a scar beneath his left ear.
Elena had seen him before.
He was Judge Malcolm Crane.
The judge who released Victoria.
The judge wearing the black-centered pearl.
DNA from an old Mercer family sample confirmed it.
Judge Crane was Benedict Mercer.
Arthur's brother was alive.
Before agents could arrest him, Crane vanished from his courthouse chambers. He left behind his robes, his phone, and a handwritten court order transferring temporary control of Mercer Horizon to an emergency trustee.
The trustee was Victoria Vale.
Arthur read the order in disbelief.
"He cannot do this."
Naomi Reed examined the attached documents. "He may have already done it. These signatures include your original corporate agreement. Benedict retained a dormant control clause. If he is legally alive, he may still own half the company."
Across the city, Mercer Tower's systems shut down.
Employees were locked out. Bank accounts froze. News channels reported that Arthur Mercer had concealed his brother's survival to steal the company.
Victoria appeared on television from a secure legal facility, smiling as her attorney read a statement.
"Maison Vale was only the beginning," she said. "Now Elena can watch her father lose the floor beneath his feet."
Then the screen changed.
A live video showed Isabella seated in a dark room.

Benedict stood behind her.
"Come home, Arthur," he said. "Bring both of my children."
