Chapter 6 - Daniel's confession)

Rachel stayed silent.
Daniel knocked once.
"I know you're inside."
Laura stood near the bathroom door.
Her face had gone pale.
Rachel whispered, "How did he find me?"
Laura shook her head.
Daniel spoke again.
"Laura, I know you're there too."
Laura closed her eyes.
For fourteen years, she had hidden from her brother.
Now he stood six feet away.
Rachel moved toward the door.
Laura grabbed her arm.
"Don't."
"I need answers."
"You already know what he is."
"No. I know what he allowed."
Rachel looked at Laura.
"I need to know why."
She opened the door.
Daniel stood alone.
No Evelyn.
No police.
No one else.
He looked exhausted.
"How did you find me?"
Daniel raised his phone.
"Your car has a tracker."
Rachel almost laughed.
"Of course it does."
He looked past her.
"Laura."
Laura stepped into view.
Daniel's face changed.
For a moment, Rachel saw something that looked like grief.
"You're alive."
Laura stared at him.
"You knew I was."
Daniel's expression collapsed.
Rachel turned toward him.
"You knew?"
Daniel sat on the edge of the motel bed.
"I found out three years ago."
Laura looked stunned.
"How?"
"You used Dad's old safe deposit box."
Laura's eyes narrowed.
Daniel continued.
"The bank flagged an access request. Mom still receives administrative notices."
"So Evelyn knows I'm alive?"
"No."
Laura did not believe him.
Daniel looked at Rachel.
"I intercepted the letter."
"Why?"
"Because I knew what she would do."
Rachel stared at him.
"You're asking me to believe you protected Laura while helping your mother destroy me?"
Daniel covered his face.
"It's complicated."
"No. Chaining a three year old is not complicated."
"I didn't know she was going to do that."
"But you watched."
Daniel looked ashamed.
Rachel continued.
"You forged my signature."
"No."
"You knew it was forged."
"Yes."
"You let a doctor drug me."
Daniel said nothing.
Rachel stepped closer.
"You let them put me on that bed."
"I thought it was temporary."
Rachel slapped him again.
Laura did not move.
Daniel accepted it.
Rachel's voice shook.
"You thought drugging your wife was temporary?"
"I was trying to stop my mother from doing something worse."
"What could be worse?"
Daniel looked toward Laura.
"Murder."
Silence filled the room.
Rachel stared at him.
Daniel began speaking.
Three months earlier, Evelyn discovered Rachel had changed Oliver's inheritance arrangements.
Rachel had created a trust that Evelyn could never control.
It was an ordinary estate planning decision.
But Evelyn saw it as betrayal.
"She started asking questions about your insurance," Daniel said.
Rachel's stomach tightened.
"Why?"
"I don't know."
"You do."
Daniel looked at her.
"I heard her talking to Vale."
"About killing me?"
"About an accident."
Laura moved closer.
"What kind of accident?"
Daniel swallowed.
"A car."
Rachel remembered the insurance policy.
"Ten million dollars."
Daniel nodded.
Rachel wanted to hate him completely.
It would have been easier.
But Daniel was crying now.
Not dramatically.
Quietly.
Like a man who had spent years knowing he was weak.
"I told her no."
Rachel's expression hardened.
"And then?"
"She said if I wouldn't cooperate, she would prove you were unstable and take Oliver."
"So you helped her."
"I thought if I let her believe the guardianship plan was working, she wouldn't move to something worse."
Rachel stared at him.
"You allowed them to drug me."
"I reduced the doses."
Laura laughed bitterly.
"Heroic."
Daniel looked at her.
"I know."
"You left me in that basement."
"I was twenty four."
"You were old enough."
Daniel lowered his head.
Laura's voice became quieter.
"You heard me screaming."
Daniel's eyes closed.
"I know."
"You brought Mom the key when I tried to escape."
"I know."
"You testified that I attacked you."
"I know."
Laura's eyes filled with tears.
"And then you let everyone believe I was crazy."
Daniel whispered, "I know."
Rachel watched them.
This family had been living inside the same nightmare for fourteen years.
Only the victim had changed.
First Laura.
Then Rachel.
Then Oliver.
Rachel asked, "Why Sabrina?"
Daniel looked up.
"She's helping me."
"Doctor Vale's daughter?"
"She hates her father."
Laura shook her head.
"You trust her?"
"She found records."
"What records?"
"Patient files. Payments. My mother's accounts."
Rachel remembered the transfer.
"The two hundred thousand?"
"To move her somewhere safe and pay for copies of the records."
"You gave a woman two hundred thousand dollars without telling me."
"I couldn't tell anyone."
Rachel stepped back.
"You could have told your wife."
Daniel looked at her.
"I was ashamed."
"Of what?"
"Everything."
Rachel pointed toward him.
"Shame does not excuse what you did."
"I know."
"No. I don't think you do."
Rachel's voice cracked.
"Our son looked at me yesterday and said your mother called him a dog."
Daniel broke.
He turned away.
Rachel did not comfort him.
After a long silence, Laura asked, "What records did Sabrina find?"
Daniel reached inside his jacket.
He removed a flash drive.
"Everything Vale kept off the official system."
Rachel stared at it.
"Why bring it here?"
"Because someone broke into Sabrina's apartment tonight."
Laura stiffened.
"Is she alive?"
"I don't know."
Rachel took the drive.
"We go to Cole."
Laura shook her head.
Daniel looked at his sister.
"Laura."
"No."
Daniel stood.
"You need to stop running."
Laura's expression sharpened.
"You don't get to tell me that."
"You're right."
He lowered his voice.
"But if Sabrina is dead, hiding won't save you anymore."
Rachel looked at both of them.
"Then we don't trust one person."
"What do you mean?" Daniel asked.
"We copy everything."
Rachel held up the flash drive.
"We send it to lawyers, journalists, investigators, anyone who can make it impossible to erase."
Laura considered this.
For the first time, she nodded.
Daniel reached into his pocket.
His phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face went white.
Rachel saw the caller.
Mother.
Daniel answered.
Evelyn's voice came through the speaker.
"Daniel, sweetheart."
No one spoke.
Evelyn continued.
"You should have told me Laura was alive."
Laura stopped breathing.
Daniel stared at Rachel.
Then Evelyn said something worse.
May you like
"And Rachel should really learn not to leave her sister alone with Oliver."
Rachel dropped the flash drive.
