THE CHAIN AROUND HIS NECK / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - the person behind the curtain)

The message changed the investigation.

For weeks, everyone had treated Evelyn as the center of the conspiracy.

She controlled Vale.

She manipulated Daniel.

She targeted Laura.

She pursued Oliver's trust.

But now the evidence suggested another person had deliberately exposed her.

Someone canceled Rachel's meeting.

Someone ensured she arrived during the chain punishment.

Someone may have wanted the hidden basement discovered.

Detective Cole created a new theory.

Two competing conspiracies.

Evelyn's network.

And someone working to destroy it from within.

Rachel hated both.

"I don't care if they helped expose Evelyn. They used my son."

Cole nodded.

"We don't know that they created the chain situation."

"They made sure I saw it."

"Possibly."

"That means they knew."

"Yes."

"And they did nothing before I arrived."

Cole had no answer.

Daniel began reviewing every communication from the previous six months.

Sabrina reviewed Vale's files.

Thomas examined financial records.

Laura searched Arthur's old documents.

Rachel stayed with Oliver.

She refused to let the investigation consume every hour.

They went to the park.

They bought ice cream.

They watched cartoons.

Oliver began laughing again.

The sound mattered more to Rachel than every trust and fortune connected to the Mercer name.

One afternoon, Oliver was drawing at the kitchen table.

He drew Rachel.

He drew himself.

Then he drew a tall man.

Rachel pointed.

"Who's that?"

Oliver answered casually.

"Mr. Gray."

Rachel froze.

"Who is Mr. Gray?"

"The man who gave Grandma the chain."

Rachel crouched beside him.

"When did you see him?"

"At the house."

"What did he look like?"

Oliver thought.

"Gray hair."

"Old?"

He nodded.

"Did Daddy know him?"

Oliver shook his head.

"Grandma did."

Rachel called Cole.

A child forensic interviewer spoke with Oliver.

He described an older man with gray hair, glasses, and a dark walking cane.

The man had visited the house twice.

Once, he spoke privately with Evelyn.

The second time, he brought a box.

Inside was the silver chain.

Rachel felt sick.

They showed Oliver photographs.

Doctor Vale.

Arthur Mercer.

Nolan Briggs.

Several attorneys.

Oliver pointed to none.

Then Sabrina provided photographs from Vale's archive.

Oliver pointed.

"Mr. Gray."

The man was named Henry Caldwell.

Thomas stood abruptly when he saw the photograph.

"No."

Rachel looked at him.

"You know him."

Thomas stared at the image.

"Henry Caldwell was Arthur's lawyer."

Laura frowned.

"He died."

Thomas shook his head.

"That's what we were told."

Cole searched government databases.

Henry Caldwell had indeed been declared dead twelve years earlier.

No body had been recovered after a boating accident.

Rachel almost laughed.

"Another dead person who isn't dead."

Thomas looked disturbed.

"Caldwell created the trusts."

"The reproductive trust?"

"All of them."

Laura whispered, "Then he knew everything."

Daniel looked toward Thomas.

"Why would he want Evelyn exposed?"

Thomas shook his head.

"Maybe he doesn't."

Rachel turned.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas looked at the family documents.

"Arthur trusted Caldwell more than anyone."

Laura understood.

"Oh God."

Rachel waited.

Laura looked at her.

"What if this isn't about destroying Evelyn?"

"What else could it be?"

"Replacing her."

The theory was terrifying.

Evelyn controlled the Mercer family through fear.

But she had become reckless.

Caldwell may have decided she was no longer useful.

So he engineered her collapse.

Rachel asked, "Then what does he want?"

Thomas looked toward Oliver.

"The heir."

Rachel's body stiffened.

"No."

Daniel stepped forward.

"We move Oliver."

Rachel shook her head.

"We already moved him."

"Somewhere they can't find."

"There is nowhere they can't find if they control the legal system."

Cole interrupted.

"There are protective options."

Rachel looked at him.

"I don't want protective options."

"What do you want?"

"I want Caldwell."

Cole nodded.

"So do I."

Two days later, police searched Henry Caldwell's former law offices.

Empty.

They found shredded documents.

Burned drives.

One surviving ledger.

Inside were coded payments dating back twenty years.

Payments to Vale.

Payments to judges.

Payments to private investigators.

Payments to Evelyn.

And one recent payment to a name Rachel recognized.

Nolan Briggs.

The insurance agent.

Connor's father.

Nolan was arrested at his office.

During interrogation, he asked for immunity.

Then he gave police something no one expected.

A video.

Recorded six months earlier.

Evelyn and Caldwell sat together in a private dining room.

Caldwell said, "The mother remains a complication."

Evelyn answered, "Rachel can be managed."

"What about Daniel?"

"He obeys me."

"And Laura?"

"Dead for all practical purposes."

Caldwell leaned back.

"The trust must transition without litigation."

Evelyn smiled.

"It will."

Caldwell asked, "And the child?"

Evelyn's expression changed.

"Oliver belongs to me."

Caldwell stared at her.

"No, Evelyn."

His voice became cold.

"He belongs to the trust."

Rachel stopped the video.

She could not watch more.

That sentence explained everything.

Oliver was not a grandson to them.

Not a child.

Not a person.

An asset.

Rachel looked at Cole.

"Find him."

"We are."

"Find him before he comes near my son."

That evening, Rachel received a call from the detention center.

Evelyn wanted to speak.

Rachel almost refused.

Then she changed her mind.

She visited the next morning.

Evelyn appeared behind thick glass.

For the first time, she looked older.

Not weak.

Just diminished.

Rachel picked up the phone.

Evelyn smiled.

"You finally came."

"Why did Caldwell give you the chain?"

Evelyn's smile vanished.

Rachel continued.

"Oliver remembered him."

Evelyn stared at her.

"He wasn't supposed to."

"Why?"

Evelyn looked toward the guard.

Then back at Rachel.

"You think you won."

"I got my son away from you."

"For now."

Rachel's grip tightened.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

"Henry chose you years before you met Daniel."

Rachel stopped breathing.

"What?"

"He chose the university you attended."

Rachel stared.

"He arranged your first job."

"You're lying."

"He arranged the charity event where you met my son."

Rachel remembered the event.

Seven years earlier.

Daniel had seemed like a coincidence.

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"You were never an accident, Rachel."

Rachel's skin went cold.

"Why me?"

Evelyn leaned closer to the glass.

"Because your family has something the Mercers needed."

"What?"

Evelyn's eyes moved toward Rachel's hand.

Her wedding ring was gone.

Only a pale line remained.

"Ask your mother."

Rachel stood.

"My mother died when I was nineteen."

May you like

Evelyn smiled.

"Did she?"
