Chapter 11 - the man who was supposed to be gone)

Thomas Reed looked nothing like Daniel.
He looked like Evelyn.
Same gray blue eyes.
Same narrow face.
Same habit of studying people before speaking.
Rachel disliked the resemblance immediately.
Thomas sat behind a table inside a federal interview facility.
Laura entered first.
Thomas stood.
Neither spoke.
Thirty eight years separated them.
Laura had been a child when he disappeared.
Thomas's eyes filled with tears.
"You grew up."
Laura laughed through tears.
"You got old."
Thomas smiled.
Then they embraced.
Rachel turned away.
Some reunions belonged to the people who survived the separation.
Eventually, Thomas looked at her.
"Rachel."
She nodded.
"You know who I am."
"I know more about you than you probably want."
"Then tell me why my son exists."
Thomas's expression changed.
He sat.
"I didn't know about Oliver until yesterday."
"But your genetic material was used."
"Without my knowledge."
"How did Vale get it?"
Thomas looked toward Cole.
"Years ago, I was treated at one of his clinics."
Laura stared at him.
"You trusted Vale?"
"I didn't know who he really was then."
Thomas explained that after leaving Evelyn's family, he spent years collecting evidence of financial crimes.
Arthur Mercer eventually discovered some of the same transactions.
Thomas contacted Arthur secretly.
They planned to confront Evelyn.
Then Arthur died.
Thomas believed the death was suspicious.
He disappeared completely.
"Why didn't you take Laura?"
Thomas looked at his sister.
"I tried."
Laura frowned.
"What?"
"I came back twice."
Laura's eyes filled.
"When?"
"The year before you disappeared."
"I never knew."
"Mom intercepted every message."
Laura turned away.
Thomas continued.
"When I learned you were missing, I assumed you were dead."
Laura laughed bitterly.
"Evelyn has a talent for that."
Rachel returned to Oliver.
"Who authorized the fertility procedure?"
Thomas hesitated.
"Arthur."
Rachel stared at him.
"Arthur had been dead for more than a decade."
"His instructions were created before his death."
Cole placed an old legal document on the table.
Arthur Mercer had established a confidential reproductive trust.
Rachel stared at the language.
"What is this?"
Thomas answered.
"My father was obsessed with the future of the family."
"Your stepfather."
Thomas nodded.
"He raised me. I called him Dad."
Arthur had stored genetic material from family members.
The trust instructed that if Daniel failed to produce a biological heir under specific circumstances, alternative family genetic material could be used.
Rachel stood abruptly.
"Without the mother's permission?"
Thomas's face tightened.
"It shouldn't have been."
"But it was."
"Yes."
Rachel turned to Cole.
"This is insane."
"It may also be criminal."
Rachel looked at Thomas.
"Why me?"
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"Because you met the trust conditions."
"What conditions?"
"Healthy. No hereditary disorders. Married into the Mercer line."
Rachel felt disgust.
"I was selected like livestock."
No one contradicted her.
Thomas continued.
"Arthur believed bloodline continuity mattered more than consent."
Laura whispered, "And Mom knew."
Thomas nodded.
"Eventually."
Rachel's mind raced.
"Then why did Evelyn try to remove me?"
"Because Oliver changed the power structure."
"Explain."
Thomas opened another document.
When Oliver was born, the reproductive trust activated.
Not the bloodline trust Laura knew about.
A second trust.
One no one had mentioned.
It gave control of a separate group of assets to Oliver's legal guardian.
Until his twenty fifth birthday.
Current value.
Four hundred twenty million dollars.
Rachel stared at the number.
"The guardian controls it."
Thomas nodded.
"That is why Evelyn needed you declared incompetent."
Rachel looked at Daniel.
"And Daniel?"
"He would become primary guardian."
Rachel understood.
Evelyn had planned to control Daniel.
Daniel would control Oliver's trust.
Evelyn would control everything.
The chain.
The guardianship order.
The drugs.
The forged psychiatric record.
It all led to money.
But something still did not fit.
"Why kill me if guardianship was enough?"
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
"Because you couldn't be allowed to challenge the trust later."
Rachel sat slowly.
"She was going to kill me."
Thomas did not answer.
He did not need to.
Laura asked, "Why use Thomas instead of Daniel?"
Thomas looked at her.
"Because Daniel's genetic screening failed."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
Thomas looked toward him.
"You carry a hereditary mutation Arthur considered disqualifying."
Daniel stared.
"No doctor ever told me that."
"Arthur knew."
Rachel felt another layer of horror.
Every member of the family had been reduced to a function.
Laura was useful until she controlled the wrong trust.
Daniel was useful until his genetics failed Arthur's standards.
Thomas was useful as biological material.
Rachel was useful as a mother.
Oliver was useful as an heir.
And Evelyn wanted to control all of them.
Rachel asked the final question.
"Why did Evelyn chain Oliver?"
Thomas looked puzzled.
"That doesn't fit."
Laura nodded slowly.
"Exactly."
Everyone turned toward her.
Laura continued.
"Mom is cruel. But she's calculated."
Rachel's anger rose.
"She chained a child."
"I know."
"Don't defend her."
"I'm not."
Laura looked at Thomas.
"She spent years planning this. Why risk everything with obvious physical abuse?"
Thomas's expression changed.
Rachel understood.
The chain incident had brought police.
Police found the cameras.
The cameras led to the basement.
The basement led to Laura.
The evidence led to Vale.
The entire operation collapsed because Evelyn performed one reckless, visible act.
It made no sense.
Unless Evelyn had wanted Rachel to see it.
Rachel whispered, "She knew I was coming home early."
Daniel looked at her.
"How?"
"My meeting was canceled that morning."
Cole spoke.
"Who canceled it?"
Rachel tried to remember.
Her assistant had received an email from the client.
She pulled out her phone.
The cancellation email looked legitimate.
Cole forwarded it for analysis.
An hour later, investigators confirmed it.
The email was fake.
Someone had deliberately sent Rachel home early.
Someone wanted her to find Oliver.
Laura sat very still.
"Then the chain wasn't the beginning."
Thomas looked toward the window.
"It was a signal."
Rachel's phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
You finally asked the right question.
Rachel showed Cole.
May you like
A second message arrived.
Evelyn Mercer was never the only person running the game.
