THE CHAIN AROUND HIS NECK / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - Evelyn Mercer is arrested)

Evelyn Mercer was arrested the following morning.

She did not resist.

Police found her in a private suite at a downtown hotel eating breakfast.

She wore a cream coat.

Her hair was perfect.

When Detective Cole entered with officers, Evelyn simply put down her coffee.

Rachel watched the arrest later through security footage.

There was no panic.

No surprise.

Only annoyance.

Evelyn asked one question.

"Is Oliver safe?"

When Cole told Rachel, she nearly threw the phone.

"She doesn't get to ask that."

The charges came quickly.

Child abuse.

Kidnapping.

Conspiracy.

Forgery.

Unlawful administration of controlled substances.

Additional charges were expected.

Doctor Marcus Vale was arrested at the border that afternoon.

Connor Briggs survived his gunshot wound and was placed under guard.

The guardianship order was suspended.

Daniel was formally investigated but not immediately charged because he had provided evidence and cooperated.

Rachel hated that.

She wanted consequences.

She also knew Daniel's testimony could destroy Evelyn's network.

Oliver returned home with Rachel three days later.

Not to the Mercer house.

Rachel could not enter that kitchen again.

She leased a small house near Megan.

Oliver chose the bedroom with blue walls.

On the first night, he asked if there were chains in the new house.

Rachel sat beside him.

"No."

"Grandma can't come?"

"No."

"Daddy?"

Rachel paused.

"Daddy can't come unless Mommy says."

Oliver thought about this.

Then nodded.

For the first time in days, he slept without waking.

Rachel sat outside his room and cried.

Not because she felt weak.

Because she had spent so much time fighting that she had forgotten what it felt like to stop.

The next weeks became a storm of lawyers, interviews, evidence, and therapy appointments.

Oliver slowly began talking about what had happened before Rachel came home that afternoon.

It had not been the first punishment.

Evelyn had forced him to sit alone in dark rooms.

She had withheld meals.

She had told him his mother would leave if he behaved badly.

Daniel had witnessed some of it.

Not all.

But enough.

That destroyed whatever remained of Rachel's marriage.

Daniel asked to see her alone.

They met in a lawyer's conference room.

He looked older.

"I'll sign whatever you want."

"Divorce?"

"Custody."

Rachel looked at him.

"You want no custody?"

Daniel swallowed.

"I don't deserve to ask."

Rachel expected satisfaction.

Instead, she felt tired.

"You are his father in every way that mattered before you failed him."

Daniel's eyes filled.

Rachel continued.

"That makes what you did worse."

"I know."

"He loved you."

"I love him."

"You watched."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I know."

Rachel pushed the custody agreement across the table.

Supervised visitation only.

Mandatory therapy.

No contact with Evelyn.

No unsupervised contact with anyone connected to the Mercer family.

Daniel signed.

Rachel watched him.

"You should have protected him."

Daniel whispered, "I should have protected all of you."

Rachel knew he meant Laura too.

Maybe even himself.

But some failures could not be repaired by understanding them.

The criminal case against Evelyn grew.

Investigators found seven other families connected to Doctor Vale.

Three involved suspicious guardianship changes.

Two involved disputed wills.

One involved a woman who died shortly after being declared mentally incompetent.

The final case remained sealed.

Sabrina believed there were more.

Laura gave a formal statement.

For the first time in fourteen years, she used her real name publicly.

The missing person case was reopened.

Then something unexpected happened.

Arthur Mercer's body was exhumed.

Toxicology testing discovered traces of a cardiac medication he had never been prescribed.

Evelyn was questioned regarding his death.

She refused to answer.

Rachel watched the news coverage from her living room while Oliver built a tower from wooden blocks.

The public story became enormous.

Wealth.

Abuse.

False medical diagnoses.

Missing family members.

Hidden rooms.

Possible murder.

But Rachel cared about only one thing.

Oliver was safe.

One evening, Laura came over for dinner.

She sat on the floor with Oliver and helped him build a train track.

He liked her.

Maybe because she never forced conversation.

Maybe because survivors recognized each other in ways adults could not explain.

After Oliver went to bed, Rachel poured coffee.

"Do you think Thomas knows?"

Laura shook her head.

"About Oliver? Probably not."

"Where is he?"

"Cole is trying to find him."

"Why was Vale watching him?"

Laura stared into her cup.

"That's what worries me."

Rachel sat opposite.

"Do you think Evelyn knew where Thomas was all these years?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't she bring him back?"

"Because Thomas knows something."

"What?"

Laura looked toward Oliver's room.

"Maybe what happened to our father."

Rachel remembered the photograph.

Subject remains unaware of grandson.

"Why create Oliver using Thomas's genetic material?"

Laura shook her head.

"I keep asking myself that."

A knock came at the door.

Rachel froze.

Laura stood.

Rachel checked the camera.

Detective Cole.

She opened.

Cole entered carrying a folder.

His expression was serious.

"We found Thomas."

Rachel gripped the door.

"Alive?"

"Yes."

Laura stepped forward.

"Where?"

Cole looked at her.

"In federal custody."

Rachel frowned.

"For what?"

Cole opened the folder.

Thomas Reed had been living under another name for more than thirty years.

He had worked as an accountant.

Then as a financial investigator.

Then, apparently, as a confidential informant.

"He was investigating Evelyn?" Laura asked.

Cole nodded.

"For a long time."

"Why didn't he contact us?"

"Because he believed your family was compromised."

Rachel thought of Daniel.

Of Vale.

Of the police report.

Cole continued.

"Thomas has agreed to meet."

Rachel looked at Laura.

"When?"

"Tomorrow."

Laura whispered, "After thirty eight years."

Cole nodded.

Then his expression became uneasy.

"There is something you need to understand before you see him."

Rachel felt dread return.

"What?"

Cole looked directly at her.

"Thomas says Evelyn didn't arrange the fertility procedure."

Rachel went still.

"But her authorization is on the document."

"He says someone used her credentials."

Laura frowned.

"Who?"

May you like

Cole closed the folder.

"That's what Thomas wants to tell you himself."
