THE CHAIN AROUND HIS NECK / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - Rachel's mother had another name)

Rachel drove directly to Megan's house.

Megan was in the backyard with Oliver.

Rachel barely greeted her.

"Where are Mom's boxes?"

Megan frowned.

"What boxes?"

"Her papers. Her old things."

"In the attic."

Rachel climbed the stairs.

She found three cardboard boxes containing photographs, tax records, letters, and old clothing.

Their mother, Catherine Hayes, had died in a hospital after a short illness.

Rachel had been nineteen.

Megan had been seventeen.

There had been no mystery.

At least, Rachel had never believed there was.

She opened the first box.

Nothing.

Second.

Nothing.

The third contained an old passport.

Rachel stared at it.

Catherine Hayes.

The photograph was her mother.

But underneath the passport was another identification card.

Different name.

Catherine Caldwell.

Rachel sat down.

Caldwell.

Her mother's maiden name.

That alone could have been coincidence.

Then she found a photograph.

Her mother as a young woman.

Standing beside Henry Caldwell.

On the back were handwritten words.

Catherine and Dad.

Rachel stopped breathing.

Henry Caldwell was her grandfather.

She called Megan upstairs.

Megan stared at the photograph.

"What is this?"

"I don't know."

"Mom never said anything about her father."

Rachel searched the box.

Letters appeared next.

Most were unopened.

All addressed to Catherine.

Sender.

Henry Caldwell.

Rachel opened one.

Catherine,

You cannot escape what you are by changing your name. Arthur's plan will continue whether you participate or not. One day your daughters will understand why blood matters.

Rachel dropped the letter.

Megan covered her mouth.

"What does that mean?"

Rachel already feared the answer.

She called Cole.

Within hours, Thomas, Laura, Daniel, and Sabrina gathered at the station.

Rachel placed the photograph on the table.

"Henry Caldwell is my grandfather."

Silence.

Thomas looked shaken.

"Then Arthur knew your family."

Rachel nodded.

"Apparently."

Sabrina opened the reproductive trust documents.

She began rereading.

Then she stopped.

"Oh."

Rachel looked at her.

"What?"

Sabrina turned the page.

"The trust required two bloodlines."

"What two bloodlines?"

"Mercer and Caldwell."

Rachel felt the room tilt.

Oliver was created from Thomas Reed and Rachel Hayes.

Mercer blood through Thomas's maternal connection to Evelyn and the Mercer household legal structure.

Caldwell blood through Rachel.

But Thomas interrupted.

"Wait. I'm not biologically a Mercer."

Sabrina nodded.

"Exactly."

Everyone went silent.

Rachel looked at the trust language.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas leaned forward.

"Arthur never cared about Mercer genetics."

Laura understood first.

"He cared about Evelyn's genetics."

Thomas nodded.

The real bloodline was not Mercer.

It was Evelyn's family line combined with Caldwell's.

Rachel stared at them.

"Why?"

No one knew.

Then Sabrina found a sealed appendix.

It referenced something called the Founders Agreement.

Cole asked, "What founders?"

Thomas shook his head.

"Arthur never mentioned it."

The appendix required Oliver to inherit controlling rights over several companies on his twenty fifth birthday.

Companies none of them recognized.

They searched corporate databases.

Some were ordinary investment firms.

Others were shell corporations.

One had ties to private medical research.

Another owned data centers.

Another controlled land across three states.

Rachel felt sick.

"This is bigger than family money."

Thomas nodded.

"Much bigger."

Daniel looked at Rachel.

"Your mother knew."

Rachel stared at Catherine's letters.

"She ran."

"From Caldwell?"

"Maybe."

They requested Catherine's medical records.

The hospital where she supposedly died had closed years ago.

Cole found archived death records.

Something was wrong.

The physician who signed Catherine's death certificate was Marcus Vale.

Rachel stared at the screen.

"No."

Megan whispered, "Mom."

The pattern repeated again.

Vale.

A death.

No body Rachel personally saw.

A closed coffin because the illness had caused severe physical deterioration.

Rachel had been nineteen.

Grieving.

Trusting.

She remembered touching the coffin.

She had never seen her mother's face.

Rachel turned toward Cole.

"Open the grave."

The exhumation order took two days.

The grave was opened under police supervision.

Rachel stood with Megan behind a barrier.

The coffin emerged.

Investigators opened it privately.

Cole returned forty minutes later.

His face told Rachel everything.

"The coffin is empty."

Megan began crying.

Rachel felt nothing at first.

Then everything.

Her mother had not been buried.

Her mother might not have died.

Or someone had removed her body.

Either possibility was horrifying.

Rachel returned home after midnight.

Oliver was sleeping at Megan's house.

Rachel sat alone.

At one seventeen, her doorbell camera activated.

Someone stood outside.

A woman.

Gray hair.

Thin coat.

Rachel stared at the screen.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

Then she removed her glasses.

Rachel dropped the phone.

The face was older.

Thinner.

But Rachel knew it.

Her mother.

May you like

Catherine.

Alive.
