Chapter 2 - the document Daniel never showed her)

Rachel did not give Oliver to anyone.
She backed against the kitchen wall and held him until the responding officers agreed to contact a child protection supervisor.
Daniel tried to speak to her twice.
She ignored him.
Evelyn sat at the kitchen table as though the entire scene were an inconvenience caused by someone else.
The paper Daniel had handed the police officer was a temporary guardianship document.
According to it, Daniel had been granted primary authority over Oliver's care because Rachel had allegedly suffered a severe psychological episode six weeks earlier.
Rachel stared at the signature at the bottom.
It looked like hers.
It was not hers.
"I never signed this."
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"You were under a lot of pressure."
"I never signed this."
"You don't remember everything from that week."
Rachel looked at him.
"What week?"
Daniel went silent.
The child protection supervisor arrived twenty minutes later.
Her name was Angela Ruiz. She was in her fifties, composed, observant, and clearly unimpressed by anyone in the Mercer kitchen.
She photographed the chain.
She photographed the lock.
She photographed the scattered food.
Then she crouched in front of Oliver.
"Can you tell me who put this around your neck?"
Oliver hid against Rachel's blazer.
Rachel stroked his hair.
"You can tell her."
Oliver pointed at Evelyn.
"Grandma."
Angela looked at Evelyn.
"Why?"
"He was throwing food."
"So you chained him?"
"I used a restraint."
Angela's expression did not change.
"A restraint designed for an animal."
Evelyn folded her arms.
"Children need boundaries."
Angela turned to Daniel.
"Were you present?"
Daniel hesitated.
Rachel watched his face.
That hesitation said everything.
"Daniel."
He sighed.
"Yes."
"And you allowed it?"
"I didn't think it would go that far."
Rachel almost laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because the alternative was screaming.
Angela stood.
"No one is remaining in this house with the child tonight except his mother."
Daniel protested immediately.
"But the guardianship order."
"We'll verify it."
Evelyn rose from the table.
"You cannot simply throw us out."
Angela turned toward her.
"I can recommend emergency separation when a child has been restrained using an animal chain."
The police escorted Evelyn and Daniel upstairs to collect essential belongings.
Rachel remained with Oliver.
He would not release her.
When Daniel returned with a small suitcase, he stopped near the kitchen entrance.
"Rachel."
She looked at him.
"You should leave."
"I need to explain."
"You stood there."
"I know."
"You stood there while she treated our son like an animal."
Daniel lowered his voice.
"I was afraid of her too."
Rachel almost slapped him again.
Instead, she asked a question that had been growing inside her.
"What was that document?"
Daniel stared at the floor.
"My mother arranged it."
"Using my signature?"
"She said it was temporary."
Rachel looked at him.
"You knew it was fake."
Daniel said nothing.
That was answer enough.
After they left, Angela remained for another hour.
She asked Rachel about the supposed psychological episode.
Rachel remembered nothing like it.
She had been exhausted six weeks earlier.
She had been working late.
She had experienced headaches and unusual sleepiness.
Once, she had woken on the living room sofa without remembering falling asleep.
Another time, she had slept for nearly sixteen hours.
Daniel had told her she was overworked.
Angela listened carefully.
"Did you see a doctor?"
"My husband said a family physician came to the house."
"You don't remember the visit?"
Rachel paused.
She remembered a man.
Gray hair.
Leather medical bag.
A bitter taste in a glass of water.
Then nothing.
Angela took notes.
"Do you remember his name?"
"No."
Angela looked toward the hallway.
"Mrs. Mercer, I think you should stay somewhere else tonight."
Rachel frowned.
"Why?"
"Because this may be more complicated than what happened today."
Rachel looked down at Oliver.
"What do you mean?"
Angela lowered her voice.
"If someone forged a guardianship document using your signature and created a medical narrative to support it, this wasn't an impulsive decision."
Rachel felt cold.
"It was planned."
Angela nodded.
After Angela left, Rachel locked every door.
She put Oliver in her bed.
He fell asleep clutching her hand.
Rachel did not sleep.
At one in the morning, she searched Daniel's home office.
Most of the drawers contained ordinary financial paperwork.
One cabinet was locked.
Rachel found the key taped beneath the desk.
Inside were bank statements.
Property records.
Insurance documents.
Then she found a blue folder.
Her name was written on the front.
RACHEL MERCER.
Inside was a copy of the guardianship order.
Behind it were notes describing her as unstable, unpredictable, paranoid, and potentially dangerous to her child.
Some were supposedly written by Daniel.
Others were attributed to a doctor named Marcus Vale.
Rachel kept reading.
Then she reached the final page.
It was an application for permanent guardianship.
The proposed guardians were Daniel Mercer and Evelyn Mercer.
The section describing Rachel's future status contained three words.
Residential psychiatric care.
Rachel covered her mouth.
They had not simply wanted control over Oliver.
They had intended to remove her from her own life.
Then she noticed another sheet beneath the application.
A life insurance policy.
Ten million dollars.
Insured person: Rachel Mercer.
Beneficiary: Daniel Mercer.
Policy date: six weeks earlier.
Rachel heard the floor creak behind her.
She spun around.
No one was there.
Then her phone lit up.
A message from Daniel.
You shouldn't be going through my office.
May you like
Rachel stopped breathing.
He knew.
