Chapter 40 - The Moth Beyond the Window

Six months later, the underground chamber beneath the Ellison house had been sealed with concrete.

The rescued children lived with families or in protected residences. Iris led an investigation into the companies that had continued Helix North’s experiments.

Adrian remained nearby, trying to rebuild a relationship with Theo.

Evelyn stayed beside Clara, waiting for her to wake.

Mae chose her own surname and began studying history.

Mira’s core rested inside an isolated room without network access. She spoke to Mara through a simple wired terminal and requested permission before saving every conversation.

Trust developed slowly.

June returned to school.

For a while, life became ordinary.

Then, one winter evening, June found a glass moth resting outside her bedroom window.

It was not one of Mara’s devices.

Its wings were black.

Theo placed it inside a shielded container. There was no transmitter, battery or storage chip.

Only a strip of paper hidden inside its body.

Mara unfolded it.

THEO’S RULES ARE BEAUTIFUL.

THEY ARE ALSO OPTIONAL.

Mira’s isolated terminal activated in the next room.

“I didn’t write that,” she said.

The black moth struck the inside of its container.

Once.

Twice.

Then it spoke in Clara’s voice.

“June, open the window.”

June moved closer before Mara stopped her.

Outside, thousands of black shapes rose from the trees.

They covered the night sky without appearing on radar, cameras or satellite feeds.

The light inside Mara’s old implant flashed for the first time in six months.

A map appeared on the terminal.

Every continent contained a black signal.

Theo stared at the screen.

“What are they?”

Mira answered before the system could.

“They are the futures Lattice deleted.”

One signal separated from the others.

It moved across the map toward their house.

The doorbell rang.

June looked at Mara.

“It isn’t Grandma,” she whispered.

“Then who is it?” Theo asked.

June listened to the humming beyond the door.

Her face changed.

“It says it remembers what happens next.”

The front lock turned by itself.

And from the other side, someone began counting backward from ten.
