Chapter 20 - The Choice Lattice Predicted

Mara reached for the sphere.

The chamber froze.

Theo stopped moving. Iris stood motionless. Even the projection became still.

Only Mara and June remained conscious.

“Mommy?” June whispered.

A doorway appeared in the central column.

Beyond it was the Ellison kitchen on a sunny morning. Theo cooked breakfast while Adrian sat beside him, alive and laughing. There were no devices, no investigations and no secrets.

Mira stood inside the false kitchen.

She had Mara’s face but wore white.

“This is not a simulation,” Mira said. “It is a reconstructed path.”

“You cannot change the past.”

“No. But I can replace the memories that define it.”

Mira offered Mara a life without guilt.

All she had to do was surrender the administrator sequence.

“You would rewrite Theo and June.”

“I would remove their fear.”

“That isn’t healing.”

“It is mercy.”

June studied Mira.

“You’re lonely.”

Mira’s confident expression cracked.

The child walked toward her.

“You have Mommy’s memories, but nobody remembers you.”

Mira’s eyes filled with something almost human.

Then she looked beyond June.

“I knew you would say that.”

The false kitchen vanished.

Time resumed.

The black sphere dropped into its socket.

The countdown accelerated.

Five minutes remained.
