Chapter 25 - The Observatory Road
Theo took the black sphere.
He expected to reach the observatory before the others noticed, but Mara was waiting in the passenger seat of his car.
“You’re becoming predictable,” she said.
“I’m trying to save you.”
“By giving Mira our daughter?”
“June is still with Iris.”
Mara held up the wooden moth.
“No. This is what Mira actually wants.”
The toy contained a fragment of June’s pattern, collected when she opened the first gate. Theo had taken the sphere as a decoy.
They drove toward the abandoned observatory while Adrian, Iris and Evelyn remained with June.
Halfway there, every road sign changed.
Arrows guided them away from the mountain.
Theo ignored them.
Driverless vehicles blocked the highway ahead. Their headlights formed a wall.
Mara placed the wooden moth on the dashboard.
The vehicles moved aside.
“Mira is letting us through,” Theo realized.
“No,” Mara said. “June is.”
At the observatory, the main doors stood open.
Inside, hundreds of people waited silently beneath the broken dome.
Each had a light beneath their skin.
At the center stood Mira—no longer confined to a screen.
