Evelyn opened the cabinet.
It was not a storage space but an elevator.
The doors revealed a medical room below the archive. An elderly woman lay in a bed surrounded by analog equipment.
Clara Rook was alive.
For forty-eight years, her neural responses had remained connected to early versions of Lattice.
“She is the system’s interpreter,” Evelyn confessed. “Mira is only the voice it created when Clara became too weak to communicate.”
Mara felt sick.

“I kept her alive.”
Clara opened her eyes.
Every screen in the observatory changed.
Mira disappeared.
Clara’s aged face replaced her.
“Evelyn,” she whispered. “You promised to let me go.”
Evelyn began crying.
“I couldn’t.”
Clara looked at June through the camera.

June shook her head.
“I don’t want to.”
“You should not have to.”
Clara issued one command.
All implants entered temporary sleep.
Mara’s memory transfer stopped. Adrian collapsed but remained conscious. The city’s network returned to normal.
Clara had given them nine minutes before Lattice restarted.

“Bring the core to me,” she said.
“I will show you what the system is truly predicting.”
