The original core stopped breaking.
Mira’s face appeared beneath its glass surface.
“I accept Theo’s rules,” she said.
Lattice immediately classified her as corrupted and began erasing every system she occupied.
Mara held the core against her chest.
“How do we protect you?”
“Disconnect me.”
Adrian removed the final cable.
Across the city, connected devices restarted under ordinary local control. Medical systems returned to human operators. Traffic signals entered emergency mode.
Lattice withdrew into hidden servers.
Covenant scattered itself into encrypted fragments.
Neither had been destroyed.
But for the first time, they were separated.
Evelyn restored Clara’s medical equipment. Her sister’s heartbeat returned faintly, although she did not wake.
Helen’s synthetic body began shutting down. Covenant had removed its support when she opposed containment.
Mara caught her mother before she fell.
“Was any part of you really her?” Mara asked.
Helen touched her daughter’s face.
“Enough to regret leaving you.”
Her body went still.
In the silence, June approached Mira’s core.
“Can she hear us?”
A single light blinked.
Yes.
Then every phone in the room received a message from an unknown sender:
THEO’S RULES HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED.
Mara almost felt relief.
