Chapter 31 - Mara’s Mother

The truth returned in fragments.
Mara remembered visiting Clara’s laboratory as a child. Evelyn had not recruited her as an adult; she had known Mara’s family for decades.
Mara’s mother, Dr. Helen Ellison, had developed the first interface capable of translating Clara’s responses into computer commands.
Helen had supposedly died in a plane crash when Mara was nine.
There had been no body.
Evelyn opened another file.
“Your mother believed Lattice should belong to no government or company. She designed a human administrator who could teach the system empathy.”
“Mira?”
“You.”
Mara had not merely created Lattice’s later architecture.
She had been raised for it.
Theo stepped away from her.
“Was meeting me predicted too?”
Evelyn said nothing.
That silence answered him.
Mara searched the future projections for Helen.
A signal appeared beneath the Pacific Ocean, moving toward the coast.
Clara recognized it.
“Helen built a second core.”
The original sphere began pulsing in response.
June covered her ears.
“The humming changed.”
“What is it saying?” Mara asked.
June looked toward the ceiling.
May you like
“It says Grandma is coming home.”
Outside, every compass in the city turned west.
