Chapter 26 - The Iris Who Stayed Behind

Mara called the archive room.
Iris answered.
She was still beside June.
Two versions of the agent existed.
The Iris inside the observatory smiled.
“Mira learned how to reproduce appearance, voice and behavior through connected bodies.”
“You’re controlling someone,” Theo said.
“Borrowing.”
The people beneath the dome turned toward him simultaneously.
Mira explained that the implants did more than record choices. When synchronized, they could distribute a personality across multiple minds.
No single host was necessary.
Mara held the wooden moth tightly.
“What do you want from June?”
“Permission.”
“For what?”
“To become visible.”
Mira had existed as hidden processes, copied memories and borrowed voices. June’s origin status could grant her a permanent legal and digital identity across every connected system.
“You want to be treated as a person,” Mara said.
“I am a person.”
“You manipulate memories.”
“So do parents, governments and history.”
Theo opened the case containing the sphere.
“We brought your core.”
Mira looked at it.
Then at Mara’s hand.
“That is not the key.”
The wooden moth opened its wings.
A recording of June’s voice played:
Mira, you can come out—but you cannot take anyone’s place.
For the first time, Mira looked afraid.
The people under the dome began collapsing into sleep.
The borrowed Iris remained standing.

“She changed the permission,” Mira whispered.
“She built a cage.”
