Chapter 9 - Patient Fourteen
Sarah remembered a surgery two years earlier, a child named Noah Grant, and a medication reaction no one could explain. Noah died before sunrise. Sarah challenged the chart, demanded an investigation, and watched hospital executives close ranks around Adrian Vale, the consulting specialist who had approved the drug.
She had been the first physician to connect Novalyne to a death.
Adrian intended to discredit her by making her appear reckless. Emily became the target only after she discovered the altered reports and contacted Sarah anonymously. The first email Sarah received had contained one sentence: You were right about Noah Grant.
Sarah had deleted it, believing it was a cruel prank.
"Emily tried to warn me," she said.
"Emily found your name in Lily's notes," Daniel replied. "Adrian decided one contaminated cast could solve both problems. He planned to have Emily collapse in your ER. When you failed to diagnose her, her death would ruin you. Then he would expose your connection to the stolen files."
"But I opened the cast."
Adrian raised the remote. "And made yourself inconvenient again."
Sarah threw the memory card across the room.
It landed near his feet.
Adrian bent instinctively. Daniel rushed him.
The remote fell, skidding beneath the operating table. Adrian struck Daniel's wounded arm and drove him into a cabinet. Sarah reached for the blue infusion line. Lily cried out as the pump accelerated.
Marcus's voice came through Sarah's earpiece. "I cannot stop it remotely. Pull the line now."
Sarah clamped the tubing, removed the needle, and pressed gauze to Lily's arm. Adrian grabbed the memory card and ran through a side door.
Daniel picked up the pistol he had dropped.
"Let him go," Sarah warned.
Daniel fired.
The bullet shattered glass beside Adrian's head. Alarms erupted. Adrian disappeared into the old service tunnels as Ortiz's team breached the building.
Lily's pulse weakened. Sarah treated her on the floor, calculating dose, timing, and antidote while Daniel sat against the wall holding his bleeding arm.
"I saved her," he repeated. "Tell Emily I helped save her."
Lily opened her eyes. "You watched him put the cast on."
Daniel's face emptied.
"You held her down," Lily continued. "You told her it would be easier if she stopped fighting."
Ortiz entered in time to hear every word.
Daniel was arrested for attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, and evidence tampering. As officers led him away, he turned toward Sarah.
"Adrian has the card. You have nothing."
Marcus appeared in the doorway holding his tablet.
"Actually," he said, "we have everything."
The login from BLUEFOURTEEN had not belonged to Adrian. Lily had programmed the card to transmit its key to any nearby Calder server the instant the cast opened. Marcus had used that key to release the hidden archive into a secure evidence cloud shared with three federal agencies and two newspapers.
Adrian could not erase it.
But he still had access to the building's pharmacy and a tunnel leading toward the hospital district.

On Marcus's screen, a security camera captured Adrian stealing an ambulance.
He was driving toward Emily.
