Chapter 8 - The Bargain

Sarah entered the abandoned research wing at 5:40 a.m. carrying the memory card and an empty evidence case.

The building had once been a pediatric hospital. Faded animals still marched along the corridor walls beneath dust and peeling paint. Ortiz's team waited outside the perimeter, unable to enter without risking Lily's life. Marcus remained in a utility van, tracking the building's internal network.

Adrian had ordered Sarah to wear a body camera so he could see that she was alone. He had not considered that Marcus could replace its feed with a thirty-second loop whenever she needed to move unseen.

Daniel met her in the former operating theater.

His suit jacket was gone. Blood marked one cuff. The confidence that had filled the emergency room had collapsed into exhaustion.

"You should not have opened it," he said.

"She would be dead."

"That was not the plan. Adrian promised he would frighten her, make her seem unstable, then move her somewhere safe."

"You bought the pump."

Daniel's face tightened. "He used my accounts."

"You told him where Emily kept her records. You agreed to decline an autopsy. You held my arm while your wife was dying."

"I panicked."

"No. You participated. Panic began when the cast opened."

For the first time, Daniel looked ashamed. It did not make him innocent.

He told Sarah that Adrian held Lily in a surgical suite below them. The poison pump was connected to a remote trigger. Daniel had tried to take the controller, and Adrian had shot him through the arm.

"Help me get Emily out of this," he said. "I can testify."

"You are asking for rescue after helping bury thirteen strangers."

"I can give you Halcyon's board."

A speaker clicked on.

"Daniel," Adrian said, "your instinct for betrayal remains predictable."

Steel doors dropped over both exits.

Gas hissed from a ceiling vent.

Sarah pulled a respirator from beneath her coat and covered her face. Daniel had no mask. He fell to his knees, coughing, and clawed at her sleeve.

"Please."

She could have left him. Instead she fitted a compact oxygen hood over his head, the emergency equipment Ortiz had insisted she carry.

"You live long enough to testify," she told him. "That is all I am promising."

Marcus killed the ventilation through the building controls. The steel door lifted three inches before its motor failed. Sarah and Daniel crawled beneath it.

In the basement they found Lily strapped to an operating table, a blue line running from a reservoir into her arm. Adrian stood beside her with the remote trigger in his hand.

"The card," he said.

Sarah held it up.

"Release her first."

Adrian smiled. "That is not how leverage works."

Behind him, Lily opened her eyes and looked directly at Daniel.

"Tell her," Lily whispered.

Daniel went still.

"Tell me what?" Sarah asked.

Adrian's smile vanished.

Daniel said, "Emily was never supposed to be the fourteenth patient."

May you like

He looked toward Sarah.

"You were."
