Chapter 7 - The Doctor Who Signed the Deaths
Adrian Vale had signed all thirteen altered trial reports.
He had built his reputation on rescuing dangerous drugs from failed studies. Halcyon paid him through consulting companies. Daniel handled the contracts. Lily discovered the deaths. Emily found the altered data. Adrian designed the method that could silence both sisters while making their deaths appear medically ordinary.
The fire at St. Agnes destroyed half the sixth-floor archive, but Marcus recovered a metal case before sprinklers flooded the laboratory. Inside were treatment logs for the thirteen victims and a schedule for Emily.
DAY 1: CONFUSION.
DAY 3: FEVER AND CYANOSIS.
DAY 6: TERMINAL ARRHYTHMIA.
The final line read: HUSBAND TO DECLINE AUTOPSY.
Daniel had agreed to bury her without an examination.
Back at the hospital, Sarah received a call from an unknown number.
"You opened my work," Adrian said.
His voice was gentle, almost amused.
"You tortured a woman."
"I preserved a company that develops medicines for millions. Every drug has casualties. We simply prevented irrational fear from destroying useful science."
"Where is Lily?"
"She is the reason Emily still had a chance. Lily persuaded me to slow the infusion. She hid the memory card while Daniel was distracted. Clever, but sentimental."
"And Daniel?"
"Daniel mistook usefulness for power."
A muffled struggle sounded through the phone. Lily cried out.
Adrian continued, "Bring me the card and the St. Agnes case. Come alone to Calder Medical's old research wing. If police enter the property, Lily receives the full dose Emily survived."
The call ended.
Ortiz had listened from another line. "You are not going alone."
"He expects surveillance."
"Good. Let him expect it."
Sarah stared through the ICU glass. Emily was awake now, weak but lucid. When Sarah explained the demand, Emily shook her head.
"The card is not the evidence he wants," she said.
"What is on it besides Lily's video?"
"A key. Lily and I split the archive. I stored the files. She stored the password."
"Where are the files?"
Emily looked toward Daniel's empty chair. "Inside his life."
She revealed that the safe-deposit box contained only a decoy. The true archive had been uploaded into Daniel's legal firm's billing system, disguised as thousands of routine invoice attachments. Adrian could not remove it without the memory card's decryption key.
"If he gets the card, every copy disappears," Emily said. "If he does not, Lily dies."
Sarah expected her to choose the evidence. Instead Emily said, "Give it to him."
Ortiz frowned. "That could erase the only case against them."
"Lily is not evidence," Emily replied. "She is my sister."
Then Marcus noticed something in the video file's metadata: the memory card had already transmitted its key once, at the exact moment Sarah opened the cast.

And that account had just logged in from inside Calder Medical's old research wing.
