Chapter 14 - The File That Opened Itself

The new folder contained no name, only a timestamp from twelve years earlier.
Inside was a neonatal chart, a recording of Evelyn Shaw speaking to Adrian, and a photograph of twin infants wearing blue identification bands. One infant was labeled E. SHAW. The other label had been scratched away.
Lily examined the research notes. "This predates Novalyne."
Sarah read the laboratory values twice. The infants had received an early compound designed to suppress genetic heart disease. One survived without complications. The other vanished from hospital records after forty-eight hours.
Emily played the audio.
Evelyn's younger voice said, "There can be no second child. My husband's family cannot know."
Adrian answered, "Then the record will show one birth and one death."
"No body. No certificate. Place her somewhere useful."
The recording ended.
Metadata showed that the folder had been added using the BLUEFOURTEEN account. Only Lily's card should have had that credential, and the card remained sealed in federal evidence.
"Someone copied the key before I hid it," Lily said.
"Who knew where it was?" Ortiz asked.
Lily hesitated. "One person. A technician at St. Agnes. She brought food after midnight and left doors unlocked when Adrian was gone. She helped me build the pump delay."
"Name?"
"Rose. I never knew her last name."
Marcus enhanced the infant photograph. A reflection in the nursery window showed a young nurse holding the camera. Her badge was partially visible: ROSE MERCER.
State records listed Rose Mercer as dead. She had supposedly drowned nine years earlier. No body had been recovered.
The team traced the upload through servers in Bangkok, Zurich, and Toronto before it returned to a public wireless network across the street from Emily's former home.
Ortiz sent officers. They found a laptop on a park bench and a thermos of hot coffee. Whoever uploaded the file had left minutes earlier.
On the laptop was a live feed from Daniel's detention cell.
Daniel sat alone beneath fluorescent lights. A guard approached and slipped an envelope through the meal slot. Daniel opened it, read one line, and began pounding on the door.
The camera microphone captured his shout.
"She is alive!"
The feed cut out.
The envelope recovered from his cell contained a photograph of Evelyn Shaw boarding a train. Beside her stood a woman who looked almost exactly like her, except for a scar along her left wrist.
On the back were six handwritten words:
YOU ARRESTED THE WRONG SHAW SISTER.
But no Shaw sister had been arrested.
Ortiz checked the courthouse transport record. The woman held as Evelyn's chief financial officer had been released that morning after her fingerprints failed to match any employee file. Her true identity remained unknown.
Emily looked again at the twin infants.
One of them had grown up inside Halcyon's empire.

The other might have built a life under someone else's name.
And one of them had just begun rewriting the evidence archive.
