Chapter 15 - The Woman Behind the Glass

Six months after the cast was opened, Emily stood before a jury and described how Daniel watched Adrian wrap the infusion pump against her arm.

She described waking inside a marriage that had become a locked room. She described the blue fluid, Lily's message, and the moment an emergency doctor chose evidence over a wealthy husband's command.

Daniel did not look at her.

Adrian did. His expression remained calm until prosecutors played Lily's recording and displayed the schedule predicting Emily's death. Then the mask slipped. He shouted that the victims were necessary, that weak minds had destroyed medical progress, that history would vindicate him.

The jury returned guilty verdicts on every major count.

Daniel received forty-two years. Adrian received life without parole. The other conspirators faced separate trials. Halcyon entered receivership, and its legitimate patents were transferred to a public trust that funded treatment for patients harmed by concealed trials.

It was not perfect justice. Nothing restored the thirteen lives. Nothing returned the sisters' stolen months or Noah's childhood. But the truth was public, the victims had their names, and the men who expected silence heard prison doors close behind them.

Outside the courthouse, Emily found Sarah and Marcus waiting with Lily and Noah's mother.

"What now?" Sarah asked.

Emily looked at her healed arm. A pale line remained where the needle had entered, but her fingers were warm and steady.

"Now I learn what my life looks like when no one else is writing it."

She and Lily established the Blue Fourteen Foundation, not to honor the scandal's nickname, but to ensure hidden medical harms could be reported outside corporate systems. Sarah's safety unit became its clinical partner. Marcus built an encrypted portal that copied every submission to independent custodians, making erasure nearly impossible.

For a while, the future felt open in the best way.

Then, on a rainy November evening, Emily received a package with no return address.

Inside was the upper half of a filthy plaster cast.

She called Ortiz before touching it. The detective arrived with a forensic team. X-rays revealed no pump, no needle, and no poison reservoir. Only a narrow cavity containing a strip of photographic film.

The developed images showed Evelyn Shaw inside a private clinic. The date stamp was three days old. In one photograph, Evelyn argued with the scarred woman from the train station. In another, she appeared to hand over a small blue vial.

The final frame showed them standing before a wall of patient photographs.

Emily recognized Sarah, Marcus, Lily, Noah, and herself.

There were dozens of others.

Across the bottom of the film, someone had written a location and a time: PIER 19. MIDNIGHT.

Beneath it was a warning.

ONLY ONE SISTER WANTS YOU ALIVE.

Ortiz urged Emily to stay behind while police searched the pier. Emily agreed. She had survived by learning that courage did not require walking willingly into every trap.

At 12:07 a.m., officers found the warehouse empty.

At 12:09, the Blue Fourteen portal received a live video.

The scarred woman sat behind a glass wall in a room Emily did not recognize. Evelyn stood on the other side holding the blue vial. Neither woman appeared restrained.

"Emily Carter," Evelyn said to the camera, "you exposed a trial. You did not expose the program."

The scarred woman leaned closer to the glass.

"Do not believe her," she said. "Ask Lily what she traded to keep you alive."

Emily turned toward her sister.

Lily had gone completely pale.

"What did you trade?" Emily asked.

Lily's eyes filled with tears. Before she could answer, every screen in the foundation office went black.

Then a hospital monitor appeared, showing a heartbeat and a patient number.

PATIENT 001.

The camera pulled back from the monitor to reveal a bed.

Someone lay beneath a white sheet, face hidden, one arm resting outside the blanket.

Around that arm was a fresh plaster cast.

Blue liquid began seeping through it.

And from somewhere beyond the camera, a familiar man's voice said, "Begin again."

The video ended before Emily could see his face.
