Chapter 12 - What Daniel Confessed

Adrian surrendered when survival ceased to be leverage.

Federal agents led him from the Garden in handcuffs while Sarah and a transport team stabilized Noah. He would live, though years of confinement and experimental medication had damaged his muscles and memory. His mother was found in another state, still leaving flowers at an empty grave every Sunday.

Daniel requested a meeting with Emily before his arraignment. Ortiz advised against it. Emily agreed only if the conversation was recorded and Sarah remained in the room.

Daniel entered in jail clothing, his wounded arm bandaged. Without the suit, he seemed smaller, but Emily knew better than to confuse humiliation with remorse.

"I thought you were dead," he told her.

"You planned my funeral."

"Adrian controlled everything."

"Did he control your hands when you held me down?"

Daniel looked at the floor.

He confessed that Halcyon had paid him for years to identify legal threats. At first he altered contracts. Later he located whistleblowers. He married Emily because her access could reveal what the company knew and what investigators might find.

"Was any of it real?" Emily asked.

He began to answer quickly, then stopped. "Some of it."

"That is not an answer."

"I loved the life we had."

"You loved access, obedience, and a clean house around your secrets."

Daniel offered one final bargain. Halcyon's chairwoman, Evelyn Shaw, had authorized the original cover-up. Adrian designed the program, but Shaw funded it. Daniel possessed recordings that could convict her.

"Where are they?" Ortiz asked.

"I tell you after you reduce the charges."

Emily studied the man she had married. His first instinct, even now, was to sell one life to purchase another.

"You already told me where they are," she said.

Daniel frowned.

"Inside your life. That is what I said about my archive. You repeated it to Adrian during the call from St. Agnes. You thought it was clever. But you always hide valuables in the same place you hide your pride."

She directed Ortiz to the wine cellar beneath their house. Behind a rack of bottles bearing the year Daniel made partner was a biometric safe.

Agents opened it using a warrant and Daniel's stored fingerprint from his arrest. They found recordings of Halcyon meetings, offshore account ledgers, false passports, and a sealed envelope addressed to Emily.

Inside was a life insurance policy worth twelve million dollars.

Daniel had signed it four days before poisoning her.

His claim that he never expected her to die collapsed before the arraignment began.

The judge denied bail.

As marshals removed him, Daniel looked back at Emily.

"Shaw will come for you."

Emily held his gaze. "Then she will find me awake."
